p.2 #1 · Your Gem Lens Non-L would be???

I would say my 85/1.4 and 200/4 micro Nikkor are at least as good as the L primes in their respective categories.

It seems I always figure out how to state my "want to know" in a post after I've read through the thread.
Free interpretation encouraged!
I mainly like reading about favorite non-Ls (nothing against Ls though).

lisa, i would interpret that you're a gearhead like most of us and want to buy a new lens?   either that, or your sunday afternoon is as exciting as the rest of those of us online right now.

Sorry Lisa, the only non L lenses I have are the 50/1.8 and the Nikkors primes I mentioned, so naturally they are the gems that I'd like to keep and use, even on a Canon.

As for the 50/1.8, it is an OK lens but for its price, it is very good. Its AF, color and bokeh are less desired but it is handy if you can not use flash in lowlight situation in a pinch, besides it is small and cheap enough to keep in your pocket.

Lisa, I can tell by looking at your profile that the big hole in your lens lineup is the 20-35/3.5-4.5 USM that I recommended earlier. Your widest lens on the 20D is only a 45mm equivalent!

Get yourself a 20-35 USM. Seriously. I might be selling mine* in a couple of weeks if you're the patient type. Otherwise just buy it new.

* If I love it so much, then why am I selling it? I need something wider for use on a 1.6x crop factor body, so I'm selling the 20-35 to offset the cost of the new lens. It's not because I don't love it!

Actually you're right on both accounts.
My widest is actually my 18-55, the kit lens.
It's safer for me to get ideas on non-L lenses because once I start reading the testimonials on L lenses my financial advisor goes berserk!

haha, well, we have a lot in common as i am soon to trade my 17-40L for a 10-22 and 35L.   this past week i purchased a 70-200 2.8L.   and, to top it off, my sunday is pretty mundane as i would rather be using my camera than working on my customers' projects.   then again, those projects fund the very hobby that keeps me sane in between projects — it's a bit of a self-fulfilling prophesy.

My favorite non-L lens is definately the Canon 15mm Fisheye.
This lens is a lot of fun to use, it is super sharp even wide open, and it is easy to defish with software. However I probably only defish 10% of the pictures I take with this lens.

Lisa, I have had the 17-40 and the 17-35, and I honestly think that the 15mm is better in sharpness as well as color and contrast. Somehow it is a more natural perspective than that of a normal wideangle, especially if you crop a bit.

Has to be my 24-85 f3.5-4.5 USM
I bought it with my EOS 5 8 years ago and it's been to the southern most parts of South Africa, South America as well as all over Europe, Peru and Boliva. Its never let me down and on my 10D works as a 38-136mm.

Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 . . .can't say enough good things. It has replaced my 70-200mm f/2.8L as my "walk-around" lens . . .

I have to also say, I love the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8, and Canon 50mm f/1.4.

When I first got into DSLR around Aug. 2004 (yes 5 months ago), I took my first best photo with a 50mm 1.8, I think I need to buy another one of those.
Those Tamron's sure look tempting (28-75).
