You make some good points, but in a way I feel people such as myself are disappointed in not having things that are real standouts. A large majority of the things you mentioned are normal evolutions that come with every generation.

I think a real standout feature is like the flash sync speed of 1/400 for the A1. That's real change that can change how I shoot things. I can freeze faster action, I can shoot wide open and not need a ND, and I can limit ambient light. I can potentially have my battery for the flash last longer

Galer posits that his pre-production unit has the ability to update firmware with an memory card. Could it be that Sony finally caught up to Nikon and Canon and got untethered for updates?

Personally I think this is more confirmation that the A9iii will be more photographer oriented. Heck maybe no mechanical shutter at all. They will cripple the video spec's to stay under the A1 but maybe bump to 36mp and all the other new goodies. That's my hope anyway. Oh and no flippy screen

Sony could have done a stacked sensor and owned entry level forever, could have taken the game to the next level, could have sent a cat amongst pigeons.

Imagine an entry level stacked sensor at a time when competition is planning to put it in their flagships.

They could have done this because they brought stacked to the market 4 years ago, and Nikon and Canon still do not have it on the shelves.

I agree with this. Who's going to buy into the RF or Z mount with something like that at the entry point? They can still easily segment the rest of the line with better spec if it was stacked and capped at FF 4k60p and maybe 15fps.

That Mark Galer video is good stuff. It's dry and perfectly to the point. It's easier to understand the quality of life upgrades in this new body.

I agree. Always great and accurate information. Mark is a Sony ambassador but focuses on the 'facts'.

I was thinking what this camera would have needed for me to buy it...but the reality is that I'm happy with my A7riii for landscape / city and A9 for toddler / street.

Yes I would like the new body and new processor but I'm not yet ready to sacrifice the MP or the silent shutter. There's the A1 of course, it would be really nice but realistically as a passionate hobbyist rather than a pro I don't need it now. Maybe I'll buy that one when it gets cheaper. (In the meantime I still have to sell my wife's A7iii, which she's way too busy to use).

Lenses on the other hand...

It is depending on how you shoot. I use the A9, too, for weddings. Whenever I can and use the E-shutter, I am happy. Otherwise, esp. with mechanical shutter use, the cam feels limited compared to the A9ii or of course the A1. Using an A1 spoils it additionally, as it is so fast to operate, the EVF so good compared to the A9. The A9, furthermore, was freakingly expensive when introduced. Sony still lists it for 3900 Euros (of course you can get it cheaper).

I like Gerald Undone's Video and think that the A7iv is a great camera for

My use of course is not that of a professional shooting weddings. I prefer my A1 to the A9, but the A9 on electronic shutter rarely feels slow to me for what I am doing. I never shoot it on mechanical shutter and I don't own a flash. My experience of the A9 was initially that the A9 was the frst digital camera that felt transparent to me in use, and I still like shooting with it and find it to be transparent. If anyone can't make good pictures with the A9, their difficulty is not the camera. My understanding is that the A92 is mostly the same as the A9 except for telecommunications functions. What do you find faster about the A92?

As for the A74, the fact that it does not appeal to me certainly doesn't mean that it isn't a fine camera for many other people. But to me, who rarely shoots video and who prefers my iphone when I do, the A74 is meh.

I know i said i was out until i watched a REAL Pro in Mark in his video. He is not much of a flash type shooter but the rest was good. I’m chewing on it. I did watch Geralds which i picked up the variable shutter

Wow. Even with the resolution difference, that buffer looks superior to the A1's.

such a shame that sony is still stuck with the same crappy IBIS that they introduced six years ago (I know newer models are advertised with 5.5 stops but you can really only get ~3 stops in reality). the competition has taken over a long time ago and sony is unable to catch up.

actual testing proves otherwise:

"Mostly, I experience a 1/3 - 2/3 stop advantage with the Canon camera. That difference is not dramatic, and the bottom line is that IBIS is valuable in both camera brands." https://www.the-digital-picture.com/News/News-Post.aspx?News=36140

and that's with an a1 that has a heat sink mounted to the sensor, which is more mass that the ibis has to compensate for.

i'll take a tiny ibis loss over the terrible r5 overheating issues, any day of the week.

For me the biggest letdown of this new camera is that it still has that same slow sensor readout speed of only 1/15 second.
Ofcourse Sony isn't going to put a stacked sensor in it, but with a faster processor they could do better than this.
Even if it was (obviously) not nearly as fast as the A9/A1, it could be much more usable than it is right now.
Look at one of it's direct competitors, the Canon EOS R6. Also no stacked sensor yet still has around 1/60 readout speed. (And yes I know it had less MP, but still... 1/15 is a lot slower.)

On IBIS it maybe the last thing I look at. Seriously learn to hand hold a camera . Stop drinking coffee . I don’t know but it’s a endless conversation and worse a actual factor in buying for some. You know they make tripods , monopods, chest pods and even table top

Just sayin

Could you imagine how much wailing we'd have here if the A74 came out with a 20mp sensor and 1/60 readout. Sony has two other cameras with great readout...if that's important, it's available.

I'd say the HUGE majority of entry level photographers really don't need anything faster.

looking for an affordable BIF camera.
i don't know too much about how these specs go.
as far as i understand, my current camera has a sensor readout speed of 15ms (or 1/60 second?) and with birds in flight I do notice rolling shutter effects sometimes but i am not bothered by it.
am i correct in assuming that the A7IV will have the same sensor readout speed (in lossy), hence, same level of rolling shutter issue, as my current camera?
does the sensor readout speed have any positive/negative effect on the AF (C-AF) performance?
also, i've not read/heard anything about "black-out free" EVF related to the A7IV.
at 120 fps refresh rate should this not give us black-out free EVF?

Still trying to understand what that actually means- is it more precise incremental speeds?
