Sigh, great review and yeah I'm going to end up owning this lens. The far corners of my landscape images are inevitably taken up by sky or cropped for printing anyway. The rest of the package is too strong to resist and the distortion frankly doesn't look awful when corrected.

Now to find a gently used copy so that the upgrade isn't quite so expensive...

Thanks. Good luck on your used copy search! I think it will likely be a while, but of course eventually you'll have stock to choose from!

I like how you're labeling the end caps

I look forward to picking one of these up for $1000. There's no denying the convenience factor. I'm guessing it will take several years. In the meantime, my 16-35 will serve me well. I'm far more in control of my GAS than I used to be...

A used one, in say 6-7 years?

Hah, thanks..!

I understand end caps are technically interchangeable, but I just feel like people who don't keep track of them at an individual level are apathetic barbarians frolicking in chaos.

Huh. And here I was thinking how inefficient it must be to keep track of an extra rear cap while shooting, rather than taking a lens off the camera, putting the rear cap from the lens you're going to mount on the one you just took off and then mounting the new lens.

- A proud frolicking barbarian.

Anarchy! Chaos!

We need order, structure and rules! Rules help control the fun!

What I do - thanks to a suggestion on FM some time ago - is put a red mark on every lens cap (and on body caps too). This makes it so much easier to line up the slots. I can’t imagine why Canon decided not to continue with the EF design and allow the RF ones also to fit on without careful alignment.

That original poster said he used his wife’s nail polish. Since my wife doesn’t use nail polish I had to purchase a bright scarlet one specially…

Not sure how a lens cap mark can help with the alignment, never had a problem with those - but yes, my daughter's bright red nail polish is clearly marking my end caps - plus the spares that I bought (because I don't label mine and misplace them sometimes )

Canon have a small index mark recessed and/or raised on every cap. You have to align this with the red index mark on the lens, for the cap, or on the body for a body cap. These are black on black plastic. Painting them makes it much quicker to align them in the only way they’ll fit on.

Right. Those are on the end caps (the camera mount part). Lens caps (the thing that goes into the filter thread) don't have a marking that I can make out, nor have I had any difficulties to put those on for the past four decades, and the filter thread hasn't changed.

Lens cap -> End cap -> Body cap. End caps used to be super easy to attach with the EF mount (super hard with the FD mount), now it's something in between I guess.

An excellent review with great sample photos! Thank you for sharing your thoughts! I have found that shooting with the 14-35mm is a lot of fun given how portable it is, and the magnification at 35mm.

Did I understand from this section that you will not be keeping the lens?

"Personally, I’ll be keeping my Sigma 14-24mm, but I have to admit there were times I was certainly tempted by the 14-35mm during the testing period."

Create a distortion correction profile in Lensfun for RawTherapee, ART, darktable, DigiKam, Topaz Studio, Photomatix, ACDSee, easyHDR, SILKYPIX and Affinity Photo. https://youtu.be/_p0fR-nH6cU

Create a distortion correction profile in Adobe Lens profile creater for Lightroom and ACR. https://youtu.be/f-rDe0zxB4U

Haven't seen profile creating software for Capture One or DxO.

I just rented one for review...did not intend on purchasing at this time...I already have a great UWA. (And wow, how broke I would be if I bought every lens I reviewed)
I just wanted to evaluate the 14-35. I liked it, but not enough to consider selling my Sigma for it, at least not in the near term.

Just playing around with my limited test shots, it looks like the Fujinon XF 8-16mm 2.8 profile with distortion correction set to ~90 is doing a decent job at correcting the wide end.. didn't try it at 35mm. Still that little weird mustache / ripple in the middle, not sure we can solve for that without Canon.

This is in CaptureOne, YMMV with LR.

First image is default profile (Generic), second is Fuji 8-16 with distortion correction = 90.

These are with the 24-105 STM profile applied, I think that's working a bit better now that I've spent some time with the lens. Really can't wait for this profile in C1.

Nothing here amazing or even critically sharp, but just sharing from last night's Cub's game with my daughter so people have some more examples to look at until this lens becomes more widely available. Note that last one, hand held at 1/10.. that's pretty nice to be able to do.

Yeah, I also found the 24-105 STM profile to do the best job in the interim.

I went to Yellowstone with only an R5 + 14-35mm and a 50mm. Probably not the wisest decision but this is heavily cropped on the 35mm range. Couldn't get the 50mm out fast enough.
