Good to know, I'm going to head over to Hunts in Holyoke today and while I'm there see where I stand on the list.

Just in case anyone else on this thread has been waiting on their pre-order from June like me, my camera dealer, Hunt's in New England, called me yesterday afternoon that my 105 S is on the way today.

I've noticed the same thing on my Z7. If I have another lens attached and I'm set for "Mechanical", then switch lenses out to the 105 it seems to stay. Once I've selected a different shutter type the "M" setting is grayed out and becomes non-selectable. I have looked in the users guide and not found anything about this. To me it's a curiosity and I guess it could be by design. If anyone knows about this it would be nice to hear.
Replying to my own message today because I received confirmation from Nikon that Mechanical shutter is disabled on the 105 and 50 mm Micro lenses. I understand the reason and suspected this was the case but somehow would prefer to have the option to decide for myself. I still consider this an annoyance and not something to base a buying decision on. Nikon also states that this applies to DX lenses and I assume this means DX lenses on FF bodies.
Here's the quote from the Nikon service ticket response.
"The mechanical shutter option is disabled with both macro lenses as well as both DX lenses. This helps reduce vibration from the shutter."

So you can't take portraits at 1/3000 s f/2.8 with the 105 MC using EFCS. You have to use silent shutter (electronic shutter) to shoot up to 1/8000s.

What if the lens is used on a tripod or a focusing rack? Is shutter vibration still an issue then? As far as I see, using electronic shutter in these cases does not have any issues either, but still there does not seem to be a real necessity to disable the mechanical shutter on the lens altogether.
Rather puzzled with the electronic shutter only. With other Z lenses using flash requires the use of the mechanical shutter in the Z7 so what happens with the micro pair? Obviously I do not possess either of theses lenses but would probably purchase the 105 at some time in the future.
D850 has capability to churn out a single RAW file after shooting in camera multi stack…Z72 doesn’t seem to have that ability. Do you think that could be valid reason to chose F mount version? I have both the cameras…

Are you sure? I was unaware of the option to create a stacked single file in camera.
In my experience the F-mount 105 VR is not a good choice for stacking; there is exposure variability from shot to shot and lots of CA. The Z-mount version excels in this task.

There is EFCS which is used by default and works normally with flash.

In many cases, extended calculations and manual intervention are needed to generate a good stacked image. I haven't heard of the D850 being able to generate such an image, and the D780 does not do it.
Yes D850 has the option to shoot many frames at different focus points and stack them in camera. I read it in a review.

As far as I know, the D850 can create a focus map image which shows the areas that are in focus in at least one of the images. It's something like combining focus peaking over several images. Yet it does not stack the actual pictures.
