Thanks Gary!
I like your old travel images above, especially #3 which is the kind of lonely drive with view that I crave.
I used to spend a LOT of time on the road out west. Literally just wandering. There was nothing better than pulling over for a coffee, getting out the Road Atlas, and trying to figure out where I was and where I wanted to go. Really, really miss those days.
Thanks Ross.

It was a beast I knew eventually it was going to be worthless and I was barely using it so I sold it off about a year ago while I could still get a decent amount for it. Put the $$ towards the 400 4.5. Much easier to handle
The 400 is clinically sharper but there was something about the files from the old 500 that I thought were more pleasing.

Yeah I get it. I'm sort of in shape, work out a few days a week but the weight of my rig does wear me down after a few hours.
I sold my D5 and just picked up a D850 for reduced weight plus resolution.
I was contemplating on selling all of my Fmount stuff and getting the ZF with kit lens and 100-400 z lens. Maybe I should have.
Just hard to give up a 500 f4 that takes a 2X TC like it isn't even there. lol

This conversation is a good example of how this hobby can be a money pit I have the 400 4.5 with the 1.4 and the Z 180-600. All I can think about is how I'd really like to get a 500 FL

Yeah man. I like the Tech of the hobby almost as much as the photographing aspect of it.
Trying out gear is awesome! It's just big $$$$ as we know. lol
I guess I could get the adapter but I feel like that's pushing out that big prime so far where it throws the balance off too much.
Especially when adding the TC. I handheld almost entirely solo. I've tried monopods, I just don't like to be tethered down.

FWIW, I frequently shoot a Z9 and 500mm f/4 AF-S II with a teleconverter. Weight and balance don’t feel much, if any different, from my gripped D850. I have no concerns or hesitations whatsoever about the combo. In fact, I’ll probably move to a 600mm f/4 FL E at some point over the next year.
