I love the lighting and general mood of these portraits. What bothers me however is that their faces look overly retouched. Kids already have almost flawless skin, so even the tiniest amount of editing done to their skin can create an overdone and unnatural plastic look. I would reduce the effect significantly or remove it completely. Otherwise excellent work.

The styling on the first three seems to be "styled" ... the last two seem to make them look more like toy figures, than people, i.e. maybe a bit too heavy handed on the styling > painterly, etc.

Styling being such as it is, sometimes the slippery slope of "more" ... well, it's slippery.

Otherwise, very nice.

While I agree with DanielScott and RustyBug on the overt retouching, the series is really good for lighting, posing, color coordination, background, etc. It seems you were going for the "1800's" child portraiture look with the emotionless expressions. Nice job on the series.

Absolutely BEAUTIFUL Dawn!!!!
Stunning photography!

Now I understand "RB's" and "DS's comments( both most admirable photographers) but truthfully, I never considered ( better word-realized)the constructive comments in my viewing and comments.

I'd echo the other comments on the overdone post work on the skin. I find the skin tones in 1, 2, and 3 look more natural, healthy and fresh. However, 4 and 5 for what it’s worth, have a pallor to them that is off enough I wonder if they are sick.

I do like your lighting position and overall demeanour of the subjects.

I enjoy the entire set, Dawn! The setting, costume, poses, background, props, colors, etc. are just great. And your children are adorable. The PP may have been overdone a little but that's your signature and it is suitable for the intended purposes.

Very well done. They do present somewhat like porcelain dolls, but very attractive ones. Good to have you back.

I love these except for the depressing expressions... children should be smiling in general imho! Great shots though, love the colors.

Your editing style and lighting is what makes your images yours. The suggestions about the skin would be to bring you back to what most everyone else is doing, but artists tend to do their own thing thankfully. Don't be everyone else. Be you. As for CC, I will say to pay more attention to their posture. On 1 and 2, the girl is slouched over a bit. On 3 and 5, her posture is really good. The boy's posture is excellent in both, but I would have done something with his left hand. I think these are your kids. I'd print No. 5 as big as any wall could take it, but you've probably already done that (or should have) a few dozen times.

One and two are excellent!
It's important to have good contrast on facial features, but a bit of skin smoothing and overly bright saturated iris's on the others is often the bane of portrait software. I know this is entirely subjective, but for me, portrait software has followed HDR for my least favorite digital styles. While your colors, lighting, props (love the bench) and backdrop are fantastic in the first two pics. However, the latter images almost get a subtle, toned mapped effect. I personally, would like to use more lighting control in my own portraits with flags, scrims and manual edits for better control of the character. Where "less is more" is my new rallying cry. Although, for family portraits, there's not too many clients who want the stylized versions of something like a Dan Winter's portrait, but his use of flags and scrims is legendary.
It's obvious you know your onions with an ability to gain trust with your subjects which is essential to connecting more emotion. Nicely done!

Howdy!

I have been away from FM for years, and today visited and by chance opened this post (first post I opened today). I don't know anything about the photographer (OP), nor have I seen any other photos by them/you. So, take my comments as coming from an impartial observer.

Since I know nothing about your previous photos, or your goals, not all of my comments below may fit you. But, perhaps they will mean something to others, and I hope the encouragement and principles will help others.

Up above FRISCORON wrote: "Your editing style and lighting is what makes your images yours. The suggestions about the skin would be to bring you back to what most everyone else is doing, but artists tend to do their own thing thankfully. Don't be everyone else. Be you."

Those are wise words if you are doing photography to please yourself first, others secondly. That has motivated me for 20+ years, so I agree with Ron and really appreciate what he wrote and how he said it.

If you do stick to your own style, there is a chance others (some, but don't expect all) will like it too.

And that, in the end, becomes more satisfying, if one is not solely driven by fame, popularity, or money (or using photos to pay the bills).

Since these are your own children, I think it is a wonderful opportunity for you to do anything you want photographically with them as subjects. Have fun with it. Challenge yourself. Try new things. Experiment. I would.

Unfortunately I don't have children, so I have always have to please others (clients, their parents), as much as possible within my own preferable styles.

If this is the style you prefer above others, practice, and perfect it as much as possible.

Whatever you do, don't let any negative criticism from others keep you from enjoying the creative outlet of photography.
_______________

I enjoyed seeing the photos you made. I think they are pleasing.
My favorite from this set is #3.

I like the lighting and poses, formal costumes, etc.
I don't mind the smile-less expressions, as those are also human expressions.

As for the comments about skin editing?
To each their own. I see good points for most of the comments up above. But, that does not negate what FRISCORON wrote.

One can go "painterly" with smooth skin, or to an extreme (subjective opinions) "plasticky" look (not my taste).
Or one can go with "what the eye sees" etc. (my preference)
Or one can go to "extreme sharpening" (not my taste).

I hope these comments help.
Sincerely,
Steady

On second viewing, I also like the expression in image #1.
However, I would crop that photo to eliminate the hands/arms (reasons: claw fingers, arm leads eye to bottom of frame).
I would prefer to keep the viewer's attention up top, on that face, and expression.
The facial expression on this one is "a keeper." Very good of face.

My preference? I would not crop closely around the face.

Just some ideas. Hope they help.
______________

And, another thought....
With such good looking kids, it must be hard to choose any photos, as I imagine they look great in many.
Lucky parents, lucky photographer.

Have fun and good light to you!

I've yet to see "negative criticism" in response to her work. Folks have given their honest opinion. They have offered helpful suggestions.

On this set, the comments have been what I consider good observations. This very stylized representation is not everyone's cup of tea. I've offered some technical suggestions but have refrained from commenting on the general style.

FWIW, the OP usually just posts them with little or no further discussion.

I have to agree, the only criticism myself and others have given here has been very constructive, not negative. I have only ever offered constructive criticism and praise to Dawn any time I have commented on her work.
