This is sweet! Can you please comment on autofocus technique you used? My Z7ii is coming in a few days, I plan to pair with my 500PF, which I've until now used with D800/500. Im thinking I'd normally use group area focus to capture something like this.

Thanks! So this shot I actually used auto area because it was so close to me. No chance of it locking on something else.

Good detail on the eye. How much did you pay for the combo, as over here it is £6000 for the camera and lens you have, similar to the price I paid for my combo.

Sorry the picture is really nothing to talk about as far as bif is concerned but
it is a Z Fc with Megadap autofocus adapter and an ancient almost 70 years old Leica Sumarit 50mm f1.5 at f2.
The lens wont get any reasonable sharpness until about f4. the image was cropped from 20mp to about 13 mp.

I just thought it was rather amusing and surprised that I was able to get a picture of a bird that is reasonably in focus with this set up.

Excellent images Mike!

I think with your work (and recent others before you) *some* of us are beginning to enjoy these images that show cropped sections of the animal, not thinking less of an image where the wing is “clipped”.

The one thing that I have not liked about primes is that if the animal is “too close”, the opportunity was lost, for a few seconds, until it moved back. I am beginning to look at my 500PF differently.

I really like these cropped sections.

>There is alot of information there that one usually would not see.
> My go-to is the 850. Such a shot of a loon (in my case), where the bird that was too close before, now gives me an image with over 8000 pixels on the long side.

Thanks

Good Light
Robert

Hello Sandy,
This is a loaded question that requires a bit of nuance. When using the Z6II I find that the keeper rate is significantly higher than the D500 (even at 12/14 fps) if... the AF system successfully tracks the subject, and I put my AF point on the correct spot. I tend to shoot single point AF and dynamic AF with both D500 and Z6II. Once the Z6II locks on, the AF is sticky and the final images are always super sharp. This AF system is great for mammals and big birds in the forest, in the water, in the

Jumping in here, Bruce - I have found the issue with small birds on all the mirrorless platforms I have tried - Olympus EM1X, Sony A9, Nikon Z6. It is often difficult to get the focus “unstuck” from the branches. While the D500 excels there, I find myself missing the WYSIWYG of mirrorless, along with silent shooting - although the D500 is relatively quiet.

Cheers

George

Hey thanks a lot! Where I frequent, I'm thrown a lot of those "too close" situations when shooting with a 500mm. I just try to make the best of it and snap a few pics anyways. Sometimes they don't make the cut, but every now and then I get one that crops nicely!

Luckily, right before he attacked, he noticed I was using a mirrorless, and decided to let me go. Had it been a DSLR, he would have ended me. 😂

Trying a Z7II. This image is with the 400 E/ FTZ adapter.

Any tips on how to overcome the"sleeping viewfinder". Presently hitting the shutter as I bring the camera to my eye. Tried covering the sensor with tape but doesnt seem to help.

I've also tried to tape the EVF sensor on the Z6II: it didn't work. On my Z fc, it does work perfectly and I use a powerbank to power the camera via USB-C.
