I’m surprised as well. Then again, seems very much aimed at the video crowd. For photography, even if the GH6 ups the resolution a bit, it’s a very expensive camera. For video, it’s apparently going to be a steal compared to the competition.
Based on the GH6 5.7k/60p and 4k/120p video features that would suggest a new high-speed 24mp sensor. I look forward to hearing more details on this new sensor and to see the next body from OMDS that uses a version of this sensor with PDAF.
I am more hopeful that Panasonic is trying to keep the platform relevant even if that means offering video focused product.
I hope it helps to update G9 and potentially EM1.3 with newer sensor, faster read out and in case of Olympus PDAF. I would happily buy 24MP G9 II or EM1.4 with decent improvement in CAF
And do not forget about the firmware updates for both the G9 (adding better/faster DFD tracking and live composite) and Pro Res Raw for the GH5s (as well as the same auto focus improvements added to the G9).
As a long term Canon user for more than 25 years (film and digital) I have been impressed with the reliability, the firmware support and the customer-focused stance that Panasonic has maintained since the GH series began. I still shoot my Canon stuff, but have been even more attracted to the attributes of the GH5, GH5s and the G9 since they all came out. As much as I feared that the GH5II was going to be uninteresting, I applaud their approach to the evolution of their system. Looking forward to hearing more about the GH6 too.
EDIT, just confirmed that the live composite is not being added to the G9 but it is going to be added as a firmware addition to the GH5II after the camera is released. Sorry for the misinformation.
GH6, if the price is 2500, I may pass for a good while, dont want to spend that much. What bothered me with the G9 and GH5 has the same issue is lack of 10 bit 4K 60 in camera, and generally, the codec selection seems kinda not great.
may just keep the G9 as my B-cam rather than GH5ii or GH6 as an A cam. 2.4 firmware update solves a huge nag.... the recording outline..... that crap has been killing me for the longest time. 2x AF will be nice.....
We got the announcements early this morning via email, but zero detail. I am joining this thread to keep up; I think µ4/3rds is still relevant. Looking forward to learning more.
The GH5 II seems to be exactly what many video creators on a budget needs. A proven workhorse upgraded to the current technological standard. I don't need a GH6, but a couple of GH5 II bodies would be perfect for my video needs.

The G9 has been one of the best deals in photography and amateur videography for the last 3 years now. At one point, you could pick one up for $1,000 CAD brand new. That's ridiculous. I would do awful things for a G9 feature set in a smaller body.

I
It feels like I have been hearing about the organic sensor for ~8 years now. I guess I stopped listening to that promise awhile ago. IMO, anyone paying attention probably was not expecting an organic sensor, especially with m43 struggling as it is.
I will be interested to see what comes out for both Olympus and Panasonic. I can see myself getting back into m43 if we get better AF-C. Not concerned about increased sensor resolution myself.
"Rolling shutter is gone for good", finally, if true, what I've been able to do all along with my Super8 cameras, that only took the industry a few decades to accomplish! Ha!
If they start talking electronic, voltage-controlled variable ND and 15-stops DR, too, it will speak well to a possible organic sensor?! 9 years has been a long wait to get something out of R&D and into customer's hands...

The new sensor is 25.5MP (or close to that - it's between 25 and 26... ). Of course, that could be the actual pixels, with only 24MP actually used for the image area, as is the case for most camera sensor specs.

Asobinet was saying it's a 30 MP sensor but 4/3 rumors are saying they're wrong. Bummer. But at least it's looking like a new sensor of some variant.
If they give us the High Res modes that they have in the S1 lineup, this will be very compelling even for stills. Panasonic implements that tech miles better than anyone from my experience.
25 million pixel PLF-less sensor
100 million pixel high-resolution shooting
5.7K video
Sensor read up to 300
fps High-speed read at 4K resolution 120 fps
Suppression of rolling shutter
Computation processing capacity is about double
New Intelligent detail
New 2D noise reduction
High performance 3D-NR (video)
Improved AF performance Processing speed is 3 times faster than before DFD performance evolution
Dynamic range boost function: It is possible to shoot a wide dynamic range image at a maximum of 60 fps by synthesizing an overexposed image and an underexposed image in real time. Achieves a dynamic range of up to 13+ stops approaching the full size. The minimum ISO sensitivity is 800, and when using V-log it is 2000, so an ND filter is essential.
Image stabilization: Adopts an ultra-high performance gyro sensor and a new algorithm, and has a correction effect equivalent to 7.5 steps. Smooth image stabilization that is ideal for movies.
Dark place performance: High-sensitivity noise is much suppressed compared to GH5II while increasing the number of pixels. It can be used normally up to ISO3200.
Built-in microphone evolved from 16bit to 24bit. 4 channels can be recorded when using an XLR adapter.
Phase-difference AF is not installed, but AF is much better. The AF calculation speed has tripled, the background omission and tracking performance have been greatly improved, and the AF speed has also become considerably faster.
There are 315 AF points in the full area. Human, face / pupil, animal + human subject recognition can be used in all AF modes. The focus range can be set with the focus limiter.

That's pretty beefy (739g). But it's also pretty dang impressive. That tilting/fully articulating screen is slick! Surprised to see the GH6 beating the GH5ii by that much in low light. Can't wait to see real world reviews that I can understand, lol!
