I shot another VB game on Wednesday. I tried using the electronic 1st curtain shutter but it didn't seem to make any difference. I tried turning off eye detection. That didn't seem to make a difference either. All of the pictures I took using Face/Eye AF were slightly out of focus.
Then I tried stopping the lens down to f/3.5. That actually seemed to sharpen up the pictures.
Stopped down does look better. But I still think something isn't quite right. The blur in the text is understandably reduced, but still there, slightly. The one with player #33 at the net, you can see the sharpness fade off on the word Cougars and the netting at the right side is softer than the left and has a dual sharp/soft look to it. There could also be some other variables at play...
But this is also pixel nitpicking and may be as good as you're going to get with this copy of the lens. Unless you want to try your luck with Canon's service department again.
Back when I had the EF70-200/2.8 IS v1, I also stopped it down slightly. My dissatisfaction with that version of the lens back then was that the AF wasn't as consistent as I would have liked with the 1D series bodies of the time (1DII, IIn). I was much happier with the overall performance of the f/4L IS when it was released ~2007 and stuck with it ever since.
