Worth it or better use WB, Color Masks?
For digital stills you can always adjust tone both globally and locally in a fast way, especially for landscape but even for people.

I guess it's not your fault. I suggested to move the thread to the general gear talk a couple posts ago as these filters are not Sony-specific . Going trough this sub, there are other such threads that I'd believe not to belong here such as "Desktop user with questions for laptop users" or "MacBook Pro vs Mac Studio - please help me decide…"
This exact same thread is mirrored in the Leica & Alternative Gear. So I believe it does not matter if you post non-sony pictures. I did as well anyway, not many people seem to care about effect filters I guess

It's not a Sony thread; I think Nehemiah originally posted it to the Alternative Gear forum (now Leica and Alternative Gear) and someone mirrored it to the Sony forum. At least that's my recollection from back when the thread first started.

Helena's lovely shots got me interested in these glow/diffusion filters. So, I got a few and compared them. The effects are more subtle than in hers because they were taken inside during daylight with much less contrast. But I think they show interesting differences and have led me to have a preference.
I compared the Tiffen Pearlescent and the Tiffen GlimmerGlass filters. The Pearlescent filters were at strengths 1/2 and at 2. The GlimmerGlass filters were at strengths 1 and at 3. The photos are all labeled. The lens used was a Batis 25mm at f2.0.
I'd be interested in what people think of the differences and characteristics.

To my eyes on my screens, the Pearlescent are slightly stronger (at the chosen strengths), slightly warmer in a way that detracts from colors, e.g., the colors of the lilies on the hearth, and have a touch more diffusion or softening to them.
It is hard to see here, but based on other test shots I have done, with the Pearlescent in comparison to the GlimmerGlass the halation around a bright light source is stronger and tends to obscure any details in or near the light source. The Pearlescent also tends to spread flare more fully throughout the image. I'll post some more comparison when I have a chance.

You hit the point and made nice comparison shots. Pearlescent have a stronger glow effect and tends to lower contrast in larger areas and soften more in the focus zone. Glimmerglass is less softening, weaker in glow and keeping more fine details but they keep strenght in specular highlights and out of focus areas.
