Sure, it's personal but your last 2 sentences are contradictory.
Sorry, I'm waiting in line to see a doc so there's not much I can do now besides browsing the forums .

Are you referring to the last sentence?

I don't see the contradiction so I'll let you explain it to me.
Feel better !
Thanks!
What I meant is that you're saying that they are no better or worse, but then call the ZA a future classic while the GM is supposedly going to be "supplanted" .
Well, I guess we're not going to see an actual Zeiss ZA successor...

Exactly - The ZAs have beautiful classic Planar renderings that will never be revised.
The GMs stand to be "improved" in future version.
If the ZAs are ultimately discontinued they will almost inevitably gain cult status in Sonyland.

Does anyone have side by side examples of the rendering between the 2 lenses? I own the GM and love the mix of very very sharp and smooth bokeh.

I think that the most important "takeaway" is that they are distinctly different lenses; so much so that it is not redundant to own both (as I do).
IMO the Planars really excel with people, flora, fauna.
The GMs, again IMO, are better "all arounders" and possibly the better bet for most people.
As an aside - interesting to see how many contributors in your linked thread regret dumping their ZAs for the GM.
Glad I didn't do that.
Yeah, it's personal. I find the GM an improvement in most areas compared to the ZA, but as we can see it differs from person to person...

Here is another example of 50mm ZA shot at f/1.4. To me, it has just the right amount of blur, microcontrast and details when shot at F1.4.
I'm not sure GM 1.2 will be as good. Granted, its 1.2 bokeh will have more blur for sure. But for environmental portraits, not only is it nice to have good blur and 3D pop, but background should also be nicely rendered without being too distracting.
I think the ZA strikes this balance beautifully.

Even today, most females can stand in the same position for 30 seconds. Have her face the exact same direction and have the same natural expression in both images - no pouting, acting up, etc. Use a deeper background with distance cues in it (seats, grass, bric-a-brac).
Same lighting is essential, no cloud interruptions. Clothing with patterns and a range of colours. Ensure exact same focal distance camera-subject. Process exactly the same, match skin tones. Avoid fashionable blown highlights. I've never understood why we dont see this done in lens reviews. Actually, I do but would be a good exercise.

I would use two of the same bodies -- for example, I have two a7R2's and would mount the 50GM on one and the 50ZA on the other. Shooting hand held is easy to swing from one body to the other for similar framing, shooting wide open.
I would certainly be interested in seeing more comparison shots between these two lenses.

Same here, i found the Zeiss 50F1.4 like new in Ebay 2 months ago with very good price ( the one that have serials number not in malfunction range). And i sold the 50GM just near price that i bought it.
Which are the serials in the malfunction range, and what goes wrong with them?
