p.1 #1 · Zony 50mm f/1.4 Planar T* ZA VS Sony FE 50mm F1.2 GM
Greetings and salutations! Come one, come all! Who will be the victor of all!? On your blue corner we have the undisputed F/1.4 champion of the world! The Sony Zeiss 50mm F/1.4 Planar T* Coming all the way from Thailand weighing in at an impressive 778 g. 52-0 on the Red corner we have the Sony 50mm F/1.2 GM from Cateye Japan weighing in at 778 g 0-0 Lean and mean the cateye bokeh machine.🤭😋🤣 In all seriousness who plans to buy this lens? Who's still content with their Zeiss planar? Which lens do you think will be the better one in overall image quality?

I love my ZA 50mm f1.4, but the off-center resolution dip is noticeable in some situations. Shot at f1.4, I'm sure the new GM f1.2 lens will 'blow the doors off' of the ZA lens in terms of overall spec's. I'm really excited by the prospect of this new lens.
For me f1.2 allows for subtle bokeh enhancement that not every photographer will need or even appreciate. When Cameralabs posted their review of the new GM 35mm f1.4, comparing it to the Sigma 35mm f1.2, they showed shots from both lenses with the comment that there was little difference between the two. To my eyes, the differences were very significant, when comparing f1.4 to f1.2. Overall, the GM lens is superior, but, for me, it is like comparing apples with oranges (I love my Sigma 1.2, but will likely add the smaller/lighter GM 35mm when we can start traveling, again).
Of course, I am a real bokeh slut, as you can see from many of my shots. www.gr8photography.com

looks like for current sample shots & reviews, ZA will win the corner-sharpness before F2(i guess).
GM will win rest of other items, as we known.
which i mean, ZA could be a bit more suitable for street-shots, while GM will be better for portraits/videos.
I don't think GM will win in the color and pop department, but we'll see. I also don't feel it would be ideal for street shots due to the zeiss and weight. The GM will be terrible for video. It focus breathes more than a fat kid running after the ice cream truck.

Zeiss has the better colors. The GM seems to have a greenish warm cast to it. Look at 41:23. You can't tell me that the color on the bottom looks better.

No answer here on color or anything else until tested against each other with all the same processes in place. I test a lot and it's not simple at all.
Really any answer anyone gives today is a opinion right or wrong but not a fact by any stretch.

You can have a look for yourself at this video comparison. Not sure why the person that posted it here earlier deleted it. It's in German though. Not that it really matters.

Now all we need is some comparison photos ( fredmiranda.com style) vs the stellar Sony/Zeiss FE 50 F1.4!
The GM 50 1.2 is probably my next Sony lens as soon as my GM 35 honeymoon cools off, but I've always really liked the spectacular Sony FE 50 F1.4 so lets see some comparisons. Please and thank you in advance

Every review and comparison between the two that I've seen so far seems to suggest the GM is noticeably sharper.
I'm still gonna keep the ZA though. It's good enough for me and my work, and I don't use 50mm often enough that I feel like I absolutely need to spend the $1300 or so (after I'd sell the ZA) to get the GM.
I would sell the ZA pretty quickly if Sony made an f1.4 GM that was smaller/lighter than both the ZA/1.2 though, assuming of course that it rendered and performed similarly to the 24 and 35 GMs

I have zero fast FE lenses in the bag and I love the 50mm focal length. Both seem to deliver fantastic images. No need for video.
The 1.4 used looks like a way better financial choice and is far more capable than me as a photographer but I’ve decided to preorder the 1.2
Buy once, cry once. If the 1.4 was significantly lighter / smaller that might have made a difference but I’m not seeing a downside to the 1.2
Just stumbled upon this. Personally I really don’t care *that* much for MTF charts but if you like them you’ll like this. Roger Cicala directly compares the Zony and the 1.2 in this article.

Interesting, very helpful article, by Roger Cicala. Thanks for the link. My question - why is the Canon RF 50mm f1.2 almost 1/2 lb. heavier than the Sony GM 50mm f1.2? . . . There's 15 elements vs. 14 for the Sony . . . Perhaps it's the different filter sizes 77mm vs. 72mm? Does that mean that the Sony likely vignettes significantly more? . . . Hhmm.

Thank you. I hadn't seen this either and was wondering if Roger was going to take "a look " at Sony's first step into 1.2 land.
"Testing the new Sony FE 50mm F1.2 GM
Sony sent me five copies of the new FE 50mm F1.2 GM for pre-testing. This is not complete testing, since it's only five copies, but that should be enough to give us some information. And while I haven't tested the Canon and Nikon 50mms, the designs suggest they should be rather similar." -Roger/DPR/LensRentals
"The Sony [FE 50 F1.4] is phenomenally good in the center; just absolutely superb. From a resolution standpoint it is clearly better than the Otus in the center, and just as good as the Otus away from the center as well. There is a little sag of the Sony’s MTF halfway to the center but then improvement out to the edges."

I love a 50mm prime, always have, but I sold my Zeiss 50/1.4 a long time ago, I just didn't love the handling, size, etc - decided to stick to the 55/1.8 instead.
I have a pre-order in. After having shot the Canon RF 50/1.2 on a R5 for half a year, I know the 50/1.2 GM is the lens I want. Fast AF which is internal and noiseless. IQ seems to be all that we can hope for. I'm not sure the GM will win in the "value" department with regards to focus-breathing for video shooters, but I don't care about either of those drawbacks. It will go nicely along with my 35/1.4GM and 20/1.8 primes on the A1, I fully expect it will be the lens that is parked on my camera.

No idea, but I will post an opinion comment anyway HA! Weight, size differences might have something to do with glass used, AF motor(s) size and accommodating the very wide Canon RF Mount?
