p.1 #1 · Great Blue Heron versus Voles

Voles lose.

Not sure if heron dunked the one vole to drown it to stop it from moving, or soaking it made it easier to swallow.

I watched the heron catch 3 voles within one hour. Then a little later I watched it catch a 4th vole, which was the only one it flew away with to a pond to dunk and swallow.

Wow, I've seen them catch fish before, but never voles. Amazing shots.

Thanks Gordon. Besides voles, they catch other rodents, ducklings, goslings, and small rabbits.

Thanks Lil. We have so many koi in our ponds that the heron and otters never get all of them.

Great shots of the heron and their vole diet. I had to look this up but I wondered if Herons regurgitate pellets like owls. I found sources that indicate they do since they swallow a lot of fur and hair that they can not digest. I have never seen one cast a pellet. At any rate-wonderful photos of this behavior.

Wonderful work on these, Tony. You can add snakes and a bug or two to the list, also.

Thanks. I have seen them coughing, but did not see any pellets.
