I can't see them producing a 21/2 APO for years. They go their own way and so are unpredictable, but you might imagine a move to the longer end of their focal length range is at least as likely as even a 28mm.
There would be greater benefit in a 90mm f2 lens, a configuration that has been pre-popularised by Leica. The post-50mm is an area they have thus far neglected for Sony (macros excepted), maybe partly due to the frame line issues in the M cameras. It could also be a 75mm since they positioned the sweet and light 75/1.5 VM as a 'Vintage' lens despite the array of modern glass boosting its mid aperture image quality.
How will the 35/2 differ from the 50/2? The design formula promises something very similar. It will be quite different to the competitors. The widest CV APO is petite compared especially to the much larger 'pro's choice' GM 35/1.4: 325g vs 525g, 49mm vs 67mm filters.
Equally, the svelte Sigma 35/2 appeals to a different and broader user group due to AF and cost. We are very lucky, spoiled for high quality choices. But we still need two more APOs from Cosina for a 28-35-50-65-90-110 set, something to satisfy everyone.
Cosina seems unlikely to ever try to make a 21mm Apo (brutal to design and build) and they already have the 21/1.4 Nokton and 21/3.5, and Sony has the 20/1.8 G and 24/1.4 GM, making things pretty crowded down there at the long edge of the ultrawide world (not to mention lenses by other manufacturers). Can anyone who has been able to compare any of these lenses offer opinions as to their relative strengths and weaknesses. Personal biases welcomed, objective data accepted.
I realize this is kind of OT in this thread, but as folk are speculating on what else Cosina might build, I thought maybe it would be worth talking about what already exists. And I too would welcome an outstanding 28mm lens from Cosina, Sony, Sigma, or whoever (not an adapted Otus, please!).

They really sleeved down the VM - image 2. The VM is stylish, the VE looks like it means business - image 3. Really like the abbreviated hood, looks protective and functional, same diameter as the barrel - image 8. And a hood cap, a favourite for small lenses - image 9. Samples are too small.
They would sell very well and with ongoing sales. And imagine with the new glass, that's why many would want them to do at least a portrait focal length. The 180mm is niche but the level of demand is very real.
..uses a very similar philosophy to Cosina's (most or nearly all glass being of special manufacture and multiple asph surfaces, which seriously boost potential optical performance), except that Leica opts for a very strong centre wide open and some trailing fall-off in outer frames wide open.
Cosina wants a flat set of curves with a more even distribution of sharpness, from wide open. Understandable since many Sony users want them for landscape/open work where sheer resolution does best when it's at the same level across the frame. Aperture settings are now entirely about how much depth of field you require.
What I mean is that if you put the M mount version of this lens on a Sony, I don't think the color is magically going to look like the Leica.
Meaning that it's not solely the E mount version of the lens on Sony.
The samples you gave are 2 different lenses. Try an M mount CV 50/2 APO on a Sony and if it looks like it does on the Leica, then I think what you are saying is true.

thanks Juha,
I'm surprised by the strong magenta color cast from the 35/2 APO samples on the A7R IV. Perhaps even worse than the 50/2 APO? The color cast is not present on the Leica M10-R samples...
That magenta doesn't look nice at all. I get a bad feeling seeing those images.
OTOH, the video showing the aperture blades... I like what I see there.
