With things like portrait where you have time, you've got time but things like that frisbee thing, you've just got to get the shot or you don't. I think first thing is first and nail the shot before you worry too much about getting it looking perfect. Sure it's much better to get it right in the camera but it's not a perfect world and the subject certainly doesn't wait for you to get it right. Nothing against JPG but it's just inflexible. That's what the digital (or chemical) darkroom is there for.
Jpeg isn't all that inflexible, unless you are out by more than say 1.5 stops over or a stop under. I tend to overexp my shots by 1/3 stop anyway for a straightforward shot and compensate accordingly for certain tricky situation - backlight or whatever. Most of my exposures have been ok so far, that's one of the reasons I haven't 'converted' to RAW shooting
RAW will definitely be useful when I need to shoot something fast like a parade. But it seems like that the pro sport photographer, journalist and some wedding photographers only shoot in jpeg for its ease and speed of processing.
This Jpeg v Raw argument can go on forever!! It's worse than film v digital.
Having said the above, I think I may start shooting RAW soon to have a taste of it. I may have missed something really tasty out there in the digital world
Trust me Zane, your shots will be much better if you did RAW. You can adjust contrast, saturation, sharpening (though apparently more accurate on JPG but I don't even sharpen in JPG) and white balance (very very handy). That's the least of what you can do... I haven't learnt everything on the C1 Pro 3.6.
I only have camera raw and i do all the post-processing in PS CS. I find the auto WB is never correct, sometimes it can be way off, hence i mainly use raw now. I'm spending longer and longer playing around with camera raw, eg. 100 photos from my perth trip took me about 2.5 hrs to just get them into jpg format. Although the final result was much better than jpg.
Hi guys - noticed this thread and being a Sydney-sider thought I'de add my 0.02c worth. Some of the places/events I go to get some snaps include:-
* Friends private cattle farm at Tamworth (whenever we are there)
* Jervis Bay, south coast - about 3 hours sth of Sydney (Holidays)
* Annual Brigaddon Scottish Highland gathering, Bundanoon - about 2.5 hours sth of Sydney (early April)
Anyway - few pointers. Many thanks to all for the other places/events as well.
I know it’s past April 1st, but still a good joke and would have shocked people who have just bought a 1d mk2. Canon is most probably working on a new version of the mk2 with 14mp and shoots at 8.5fps

On Sunday went to the white-water centre at Nepean had lots of fun riding down the rapids on an inflatable canoe and some times with out the canoe. My mate loves this sport. He was going down this weekend, I tagged along to take photos, and it has free entry you only have to pay if you go in the water

How close were you to the action phatfoto.. and what lens did u use?
hi rwwlee, I really like you night shots of perth how long was the exposure? the clouds look like they are really moving, especially the first.
I was pretty close to the action anywhere between 2-5 meters and I used a sigma 70-200. I might go back another day and take more photos and ride the rapids. This time i will bring a nose clip, when you capsize the water gushes up your nose as you go down the rapids, but still lots of FUN
Quick question is the image a little to dark or is it the LCD monitor at work . The imaged looked ok at home on my crt.

Yes it was... got quite scared going up some of them roads. I only got 110km left in the tank and no intensions of filling it up.
Is there any other events coming up soon? actually I'm sick of seeing flash bulbs right now. Chris Atkinson (the WRC driver) I think is in the next room getting his photo shoot. Marketing dept don't know who else is a photog here.
Nice Perth photos. The first one has really nice exposure and I love those moving cloud (20s??)
Second one's a bit dark, but very strong composition, it would be nicer with a bit more articial lighting on the structure or if you shoot it earlier in that evening...well I like the compo, the articifial light from the second floor windows adds to the composition too
Third one has nice exposure also, but do you think it's not quite level, all the buildings are leaning to the left...or is it just me.
It's good to finish a nice sunset at 7pm, then head off to dinner. 6pm is a bit early like now, 8pm is a little late...
