Btw, Chris. Love the shots. I couldn't do anything like that on my Sony....
Yeah right.. thanks Rob-Bob.
Let's talk tripod heads... I just found in the basement a NICE Manfrotto 074B with a 029 head from my dad who last used it 20+ yrs ago. Now the head is missing a horizontal handle (swivel left to right) on it and a camera attachment bolt (the bolt on the baseplate was used for surveying purposes so it's a lot bigger). Is there any place I can get them easily?
Hi all. Nice, long string.
I'll be coming over in May. From the 11th-28th; Arrive in Syd. 4days. Darwin-4days, Port douglas 4days, & Brisbane-4 days. Any suggestions/ input from my fellow FMers would be welcome. Thanks, Bob
Oh hey Smelly, I forgot to add, I recently got the Copper Hills sensor swipe. works great. If nothing else I'd reccomend going to his site and reading why he recomends never to use air to "clean" inside a camera.
Bob, I'm not all sold on the copperhill technique. I'm leaning towards the sensor brush but then I'm worried about a brush and what it actually does. At the moment though, it's the "out of sight, out of mind" philosophy. So as long as I don't shoot at f18 and upwards, I don't see it.
As for your trip, I'm sure we can organise a little gathering. Where abouts are you staying in Sydney and what sorta things do you want to see?
Its all booked, but off hand(no itenerary yet)I can't remember anything except surfers paradise hotel, on the gold coast, and maybe the hilton or shereton(i think)in syd. . . so i'll have 2 get back w/ ya on that. Thanks for the offer. I can't wait.
I HIGHLY recomend the pecpads/swipe/methonal combo. I actually made my own from an old bowl scraper, but it isn't as flexable as his. The two times i've done it(once w/ mine & once w/ his) the difference in spotless-vs-spotted was mindblowing. I'm not @ home right now, (and haven't posted pics here yet) or I could show U the b4 & after. Really, I wouldn't recomend touching the ccd, if it wasn't almost fool proof. I would, however say no to the brush idea. I have one also, but the brissels seem too dangerous. Also they arent lifting, or cleaning the dust, only moving everything around. (the pec pad w/ the fluid- picks everything up- off of the ccd) Thats why blowing isn't the best idea either. the dust can just settle back on the ccd.
ic.. City hotels I guess. Then I suggest hanging about in the city to take some shots of the cityscape like the Opera House, the Harbour Bridge (aka coathanger) but I guess if you don't have time, make time to go up the centrepoint tower. I haven't been up there for 10+ years so I'm not sure how well you can take photos there thru the glass but I guess it's worth a shot.
I'll leave the cleaning for now... I'll persist with the foot pump for now until I hear more about it. The last thing I need is my camera to be down.
We'll be in Syd for 4 days, going to do the "tourist" all day tour/trip with some type of tour company. Gotcha though, the centrepoint tower. . . right! Other than that, All we're planning on doing is hang in/ arround town (no car)and try to find some hapn'n bars/clubs.
I'll stay in touch. Thanks again. Rb.-
I reacon that a day walking around grabbin some shots of what ever presents it's self would be the go , Wed through Sat should present some great Candid possibillities in and around the city, We should be having some snow up here by then too
I'm keen to organize a day if possible and I have an appointment with the RFDS to do a Shoot of one of their Aircraft around then so if I can combine the 2 then well and good.
Smelley Manfrotto stuff you have is available as I use these plates with my 029 head but will be getting a ball when possible .so I may have some hex plates and so on available cheaply
Maurice, keep me updated on the sale. I will be VERY interested. The 029 head I think is a nice piece of gear. Especially the spirit levellers. Great for night shots when you can't determine what is straight until you take the shot.
(though I must say I bought myself a 141RC head today... the only thing I have against the hex plates is that you can't keep them on the camera full time compared to the smaller rectangular ones.

IIRC the big hex plates were made for medium format cameras, so they're way too large for 35mm. I'm also not a big fan of ball heads, but I can see where they'd come in handy every now and then.
Last time I looked, Foto Reisel didn't have any of the hex plates for sale, but you can order them in.
I'd like to go for a trip down to the Snowy, but the problem for me is finding someone to drive - or maybe share the driving with. I'm also losing my car this month, so I may be carless for a while.
Hmm.. tried the 141RC head with the 100-400 tonight. However, when I plugged the tripod collar from the lens onto the body, I couldn't attach it properly because the grip gets in the way. Only way around it is to mount the lense at another direction...
