IIRC the big hex plates were made for medium format cameras, so they're way too large for 35mm. I'm also not a big fan of ball heads, but I can see where they'd come in handy every now and then.
Last time I looked, Foto Reisel didn't have any of the hex plates for sale, but you can order them in.
I'd like to go for a trip down to the Snowy, but the problem for me is finding someone to drive - or maybe share the driving with. I'm also losing my car this month, so I may be carless for a while....Show more →
Actually, I can't open my battery compartment with the hex plates on. But I guess as you said yesterday, it's not a thing you'd use everyday.
Snowy does sound great though. I don't mind driving if someone pays for the fuel. Plus I can change cars quicker by racking the k's.
Those IR pics.. it's just coz there isn't a consistent colour on the same thing. Maybe that's why it looks weird and not right.
Smelly what plates do you need ? Yhe Hex that you had illistrated ?
I'm thinking very seriously about going really right stuff due to the very fast change of format from Landscape to portrait mode for the action snow shots I do , BUT in saying that I use the Bigma a lot on snow because it gives me range, and aperture is far less a priority and as such the Lens collar comes into its own but all these places can be fitted with RRS wedge plates allowing great flexibility.
Bascially a 030-14 hex plate. I've got a 030-38 which is pointless for me. I don't have anything with a 3/8" thread. As long as it fits the 029 head. Also if you are 'disposing' the 029 head, I'd take it as well. I think for the price of a handle, it'd cost me just the same.
I think the 029 head is somewhere in the $100 range. The handles and hex plate might end up costing about as much, so you might want to think about looking for a new head.
True.. might think about it... should have really walked about more thru the shops looking for a nice head (for the tripod). Though on B&H, the hex plates are around US$18 each. Maybe I can get away without the panning handle though it'd be tricky when it comes to weird angles.
However, I'm going to start using the 141RC sideways so the latch won't get in the way of the grip.
I think just before they close the roads might be the way to go. I remember sorta trying to drive to Khancoban from Thredbo and there was a sorta thin layer of snow and ice on the road. Quickly turned around there in case anything else happened. I'll probably will be in a 2WD car now... going to give up the Subaru for some more $$.
I haven't had a chance to go thr the posts i missed. But Smelly, great shots there. I like the composition of the centrepoint tower, but exposure is a bit over on the centrept, I guess the foreground will be too dark if the tower has correct exposure. But I think you have improved on your composition technique Smelly.
I also like the violin shot most, very strong compo and good use of slow shutter as well. This shot is first class...well done and congrats!!
Good composition for the old man and bird shot too, but background is a little messy - I guess there isn't much you can do about it. But nice grab shot
Smelly, this is a much better set than the Bondi photos a few pages back (and your previous shots )
Ed, those colours of the IR shots are a bit weird... but this might be exactly what you wanted.
I enjoyed the trip but it's not exactly a great trip for photography. Spent a lot of time with my wife shopping as things (clothes, handbags, accessories etc - photo equipments are slightly dearer than HK, but I had some good deals with Thailand's 7% VAT refund) are so cheap in Thailand and we wanted to stay out of the heat...it's so bloody hot and humid in both Thailand and Singapore at this time of the year.
I did shoot about 8GB , when I have some time, I will sort them out and post them...
I don't have much luck with tripods. One of the handles of my 141 RC got stuck and I couldnt unscrew it
I bought a light weight tripod in Singapore - something that is an imitation of a Giotto equivalent but is about 1/4 of Giotto's price. Funny brand called Viagrxx or Avigra. I put my 488RC head on it and everything's fine until I tried to remove the head from the tripod, the head could not be unscrewed and removed but was pulled out by me together with the screw between the tripod and its head, the one which is supposed to stay on the tripod...
I'm sure you can unscrew the handles. Soak the thread with WD40. Leave for a few minutes and try it. WD40 does wonders to stuck screws.
As for that screw that came off, see if you can find a person that can weld the screw on the tripod. I don't have an arc welder anymore so I can't help you there.
Thx for the comments on the pics. Give me an idea on what to do.
