It's a good range for everyday shots. My Tamron even though it's not an L lens gets 50/50 time to the 17-40.

Nope... no one wants a virtually brand new 17-85. I wish I could use it though. It's not a bad lens and IS is a good thing.

A 'kid' on dpreview.com posted the speed of the XDrive VP6210, seems quite fast:

100 NEF files (9,8 Mo each) from CF Ridata 1Go 52x to computer with Delkin cardbus 32: 2'18"

100 NEF files (9,8 Mo each) from CF Ridata 1Go 52x to VP 6210 (80Go/5400trm): 3'55"

100 NEF files (9,8 Mo each) from VP 6210 (80Go/5400trm) to computer: 4'43"

BTW, if you dont already know, NEF is Nikon's raw file

Zane, have you decided what you're going to get? i'm thinking about getting a hd drive before my trip, i'm sure i'll run out of CF memory and end up shooting in medium size jpg.

I was initially looking at the Epson P2000, but everyone around the world is out of stock, then the Jobo Giga Vu Pro with similar functions but Steven's Digicam said it has a lower res LCD (but same price as the Epson $499US). Then Ed and Smelly led me into looking at the XDrive VP6210, I am now 95% convinced that it's a capable unit with a good LCD colour display, costing approx AUD$550 (incl GST - get GST back!!) for 80GB about $450 for 40GB

That's approximately 4mb/s from the CF card to the VP6210, which is not slow, but still not as fast as it could be.

The top read speed for a 52x card should be around 8mb/s. Its possible that the 2.5" drive's write speed is slower than that, but the bottleneck is probably the interface hardware.

btw, the compactdrive is about the same speed as the vp6210.

Back to the original topic, The Royal Easter Show is coming. Anyone not going overseas up for it?
http://www.eastershow.com.au/ 18-31 March.

And also can we finalise what's going to happen on Sunday morning to Canberra? Who's going where? How are people going? What time? How long?

Zane, then that's not too bad I guess. My Sandisk isn't any 52x I guess... will buy faster cards too anyway. Need more cards. The guy that runs www.powerinnumbers.com.au is pretty nice though. His response is anyways quick and gets good feedback from local and overseas buyers. Took him 2 days to send my XDrive.

Buy one for sure. If the 6210 is as fast as they claim, then it'd be a good buy for something with a screen u can see the photo on. Don't shoot in medium jpg. Go all out with RAW!

If you are thinking of going to the easter show you should go when the rodeo is on. Last year it was on at night so you will need your fast lens.
Selly tofu i have a lexar 80x CF no difference in speed with my sandisk ultra on a 10D if you are planning on upgrading your camera soon than buy the faster card.
reagrding the ballon festival I am planning on going on the 19 21 march all going well and will be driving down.

I know about the speed thing on the 10D. It's appaulling 1.x Mb/sec. I am due to lose a 1Gb card to my gf anyway... so it's a good excuse to get a 2Gb card.

I remember last year they have the Crusty Demons (those motorcycle stunt people jumping off ramps for those that don't know) throughout the Easter show which was good but I think the easiest to photographer is the Holden utes that slide about. I didn't bring a camera last year to take photos of them. Have to see what's actually in it this year.

With Canberra, I think we've tentatively penciled in Sunday morning or something to get there before sunrise in Canberra. I have no idea where it is but I'll drive down.

Yeah, it seems www.jaldigital.com.au is cheaper. I only have 1 week before i leave, not sure if they'll get it here within that time.

North Rocks Westfields with their computer market on Sunday seem to have the lower X-Drive there. Also have a look at www.umart.com.au They are in Enfield along the Hume Hwy and you can go buy an X-Drive there as well but the lower models again. I don't think they've got the 6210

Just a thought, why don't u get it in HK? I'm sure they'd sell it there. I've never really looked for it there but I "guess" u can buy anything in MongKok.
