I suspect the mother in Jon's article is beyond help. I mean that seriously. Mothers are protective, I get that - but if she is already twitchy & paranoid to the point where a scenario as described in the article could take place then irrational fear has taken hold.
Disclaimer: I live near the RNP, and I'm not a psycho :-) Just to clear that up.
The only thing fear is good for in a democracy is making people buy things and keeping the masses voting.
In the interest of ballance, I may also leave a comment on Jon's blog encouraging him to consider what his employer is doing in the service of keeping everyone scared and spending.
Quick Poll: Is there anyone here who has not been confronted by someone for taking a picture in public?
I work in Saudi Arabia and live on a very small compound with a close community of Ex pats, who by nature of the compound all know each other atleast to say a friendly Hi to and chit chat. I was photographing at a fund raiser that was held here, the fundraiser was for the family of a guy I worked with who was killed in a car accident and his wife had requested that I make a record of the day (still and video)so she could remember all the good friends she had made here. One of the performers for the day was a magician, I was taking photos of the kids reactions to his tricks, and one parent virtually accused me of taking them for my own nefarious purposes.
Photography here in Saudi Arabia in public is still illegal for a number of reasons I won't go into. They are getting more relaxed with Cameras as long as you don't point it at women, mosques or buildings. Frustrating but just one of the things about existing in a place such as this. Yet just across the causeway in Bahrain they are a little more relaxed
Heaven help me if I thought about going out in Public here with my DSLR and a great white L lense. I probably be strung up without a second thought and definitely no legal recourse to fall back on.
The downtown camera shop dealers. They are absolutely cold, wouldn't explain things (partly because they only want to swipe your card and have you out of their shop quick) or because some of them don't even know what a digital camera and lens are. No idea, or they want to force you even the rubbish if that's the only one on stock. Arrogant people, who would measure you up what kinda customer you are: Poor, rich, shy, or same kind of MF like them, and would speak 2U accordingly.
I could tell you a LOT of story. Why i write this post today? Coz i went back to one of them today, and got the same treatment yet again.
Is it really so i described, or bad fortune goes along with me every time i go into a camera shop? I'm really disppointed. I need some feedback.
That's why I've rarely bought from any camera stores here. I got a similar treatment at a big retailer in Parramatta Westfields.
I'd pay (well, not really) Australian prices if the service was good but it's not worth the extra to buy here. I'd wonder how the process of warranty would be... they'd probably tell you to go to the manufacturer.
I've always had good service at Foto Riesel and Teds. I've almost always had bad service at most of the other retailers - ccc, old fletchers - especially in their 'pro' section, until i whip out a 1D. Then the attitude flips 180 degrees.

Is that when Mick is there? I haven't had the pleasure yet...
Whose planning on going to see the big ships come in ?
I am planing on being there somewhere.Trying to come up with some good spots to photograph the ships.
I was thinking north head to photograph the Queen Mary 2 when she comes though the heads then down to Taronga zoo wharf to try and get the ship in the same shot as the opera house
Anybody got any better spots they can think of I will not take up much room I promise.
Doesn't look like good weather though... not with the clouds this evening.. but I guess that's a long time till the morning. I won't be there... I'm usually at work at 7am so I can get out at 5...
Come to think of it, this was the QE2 back in Feb 2000 I took... Seen some pics of the QM2 on SMH site... I cannot imagine how large this dinghy can be.
Hey guys. I took a nice photo (well I like it and so do others so lets call it nice ) of some lighting we had on Monday night. The image can be seem here:
I wanted to have a shot at providing the image to ABC News (Darwin) where they show an local photo during the weather reading (I assume they do that down your way too) but I don't want to transfer them full ownership and or full exclusivity to do with the image as and how they see fit. I am wondering if any of you have had any dealings with ABC and if you have a copy of a release that I could use (or know where I can get one from).
