maybe on the radio? btw, I think you could do with the 24-105 IS for your car shots...

I'll put a strap on that I bought and try it out.. but I would have preferred my old 17-85IS for this type of work though the IS probably wouldn't work that well.

Hey Smelly, that fishy Harbour Bridge is pretty refreshing with or without the heart lit up. Is that with your 8mm fishy then cropped??

No, 8mm like that. The 8mm only projects an image circle just right for the 1.6x FOV and I don't think anyone did fireworks... it was too hot that day to be out there plus I had a ton of things that just so happened to do on the day.

IS counteracts vibration - so I think it'd be pretty useful to you.

We were there for the 9pm fireworks, but at CQ it was standing room only... so we decided to go home after that.

Hi All, I'm new to FM... are there many Australians out there? I'm from Sydney myself.

Just thought I'd share some of my shots from NYE.

Please leave your comments and suggestions... also I have this annoying problem... I get a different image when I view from my work laptop (image seems really dark), my home notebook (image looks fine) and my home desktop with TFT (image also looks fine). Does anyone have that problem? I'm on my work laptop now and my images seem darker than they should be... do you think the images are too dark? How can I get around this problem? Thanks.

Hi Sitback ( Brendan) welcome to the FM web site and particularly the "High Sydney" thread, there are probably 3 doz or more regular Aussies on FM that I notice on a regular basis of which 12 or so are regulars on this thread.

Laptops are not the best for viewing images they usually have little or no adjustments for colours RGB or contrast so generally what you see is what you get.

I like the first fire work image.

The composition of the second image is great the piers leading your eyes to the marina and the buildings in the background and a balanced sky in the top third. Also like the balance between the buildings in the lower righthand side and the open (negative space ) of the sky in the opposite corner. The reflections and light on the piers also does a lot for this image.

The third image on the other hand is a bit messy in comparison no one real subject no leading lines like the one above and the lighting is not as good.

Hope this is of some help

Hi and welcome Brendan. I only use my laptop for my photos processing. Ideally should colour and gamma match the various monitors. I tried doing it on mine, but still not quite right. Best to use a CRT if possible, at least that eliminates the brightness problem.

I agree with Chris with the photos. The exposure time for the first fireworks photo is just right!

Welcome Sitback. I must say the only thing I have to suggest is that the pictures look too saturated to seem real.

Brendan, only suggestion might be try to shoot the night scene right after sunset for more ambient light. The pics, esp #2 and 3, have too much black area. have you tried to meter from the mid tone? so i guess it doesnt matter which monitor you are viewing your images from? Welcome, btw.

A new hearty glow on the Bridge
5 January 2006

Lord Mayor, Clover Moore MP, announced today the glowing heart fixture on the Sydney Harbour Bridge that caught the imagination of the public on New Year's Eve is returning to mark the start of the 2006 Sydney Festival.

The City of Sydney has arranged to reignite the heart to help celebrate the official launch of the Festival on Saturday evening.

The fixture, which will feature a newly devised moving effect different to that seen on New Year's Eve, will light up from sunset to midnight each night for the period 7-15 January.

The Sydney Festival, now in its 30th year, starts on Saturday night with four shows, including Blue Invasion - a free light and sound installation by internationally acclaimed New York artist Tony Oursler, in Hyde Park North.

The City of Sydney is a principal supporter of the Festival, which runs from 7-26 January.

Lord Mayor, Clover Moore MP, said:

"The glowing heart was extremely well received by people as part of the tremendous outpouring of community spirit on New Year's Eve. It helped us highlight important Australian characteristics - tolerance, diversity and compassion.

"The Sydney Festival is a magnificent showcase of theatre, music, dance, visual arts and celebration of life in Sydney and its people.

"We thought it would be a fitting gesture to reignite the heart fixture, given that the Festival ignites so many parts of the City and brings people of all walks of life together for an exciting and enjoyable time."

Ms Moore thanked the Roads and Traffic Authority for its cooperation in enabling the fixture to remain in place for a further seven nights.
