There was a thread a while ago - maybe closer to the start of the year? - where a fella made one from some tin and a couple of hot shoe flashes. I tried searching the boards but the search & archive here are glacial and I gave up...
it can't be that hard, I think... just need a set of cheapo flashes, wire them in series and get a remote flash cable for the camera. It might be a good project.

It would be a good project, and maybe cheper than getting one from Baltronics too!
Thanks Zane for the course info - not sure I can afford it though. Will keep plugging away with online help. I've spent too much buying some lights
On DIY ring lights, one other one Serg came up with some time back was using an umbrella to bounce the light and placing a large disk in the centre so it blocked the light from the centre of the umbrella.

Was this the thread you are refering to
That's interesting, but a bit on the small side, I think. Another alternative that I've seen is to use halogen lights mounted on particleboard. You shoot through a big hole in the middle.
Nev: That Serg is a crafty character! good idea. Zane: Yep - I got that, a couple of heads and a Topas A4 pack for the weekend. SO MUCH LIGHT! Was no problem to overpower sunlight with that setup, and the recycle time was just so fast! Chris:That's not the thread i had in mind, but it's practically the same. I agree with Ed, it's maybe a bit small but the sample pic looks pretty good. The Bron light is about 50cm wide with a reflector on it by my estimate.
I'd like to see a dodgy bit of foam and masking tape like that stuck on the front of a couple of the MkIIs that frequent this thread!

You mean those with them level entry cameras
No. Anything with a 1D on it are still the entry level cameras.... but what is a 5D suppose to be? Somewhere between 20D and 1D? then that means a 5D is NOT the entry level camera!

Hey I always thought my 300D was near the top of the range
and for that, I get models, stylists, backdrop and studio lights. I'd say it's pretty good value.
let say you do lighting or portraiture at ACP, you also get backdrops, lights, models, stylists, a good instructor who gives good instructions, weekly assignments, group discussion of weekly assignments, useful notes, meet good people, good learning atmosphere, end of term student exhibitions, hiring of studio, darkroom for cheap etc etc, all for $23 per hour...I think that's pretty good value....
I m not saying you dont get good advice from Mick ok...

Yes, 300D is the top of the range.. I've owned one... but downgraded and so do a lot of people here when they realised they didn't need all the functionality of a 300D.
