been following your thread for a little while. I also live in Sydney (North west near Castle Hill).
Wondering whether you guys know of any decent internediate / advanced photo courses around the area?
also - do any of you guys calibrate your monitors/ prints? i noticed you talked about matching them, and using Adobe Gamma - but i've only found that particular tool frustrating for attempting to calibrate my laptop LCD (no graduating tones... only lines)...

Hi Lael welcome to the thread
Laptops are not the best to calibrate at all and it is only now that some of the better flat sreens are being used for photo work. Most laptops do not have the RGB channels to alter which is what calibrating is all about and the cheaper flat srceens you can only adjust 2 channels.
Not to sure on photo courses some are too basic and others still dwell too much on film this one seems to be a good mix, do not know anyone who has tried it though http://www.focus10.com.au/
I use a laptop too - a 17" WXGA screen on a generic notebook. I also use a LCD for my desktop. Do you print your images? I find it is best to try to match skin tones and more neutral colours as close as possible on the monitor when calibrating using Adobe Gamma. Even though most LCD monitors display vivid and saturated colours I find they do not have the gammut (colour range) of a good inkjet print. I find my monitor is especially deficient in ultra reds and yellows. Despite this, I have a reasonable match for skin tones and usually can print an A4 or A3 without fear that it will be grossly off what I see on the screen.
Welcome to the thread Lael. There are course on the http://www.photoimaging.com.au site you can look in. What about the Diplomas at TAFE?
I'm waiting to calibrate my monitor to my prints though I prefer to modify my printing profile than my monitor profile as I display more of my work on the monitor than on paper.
I don't know any around your area, but Australian Centre for Photography is well known for its practical workshops. They also provide darkroom and studio hire.
You may also wish to go to Northside Creative Photography in Lindfield. They have regular competitions and seminars and is a great place to learn!!
We can do something like visiting a place together like Circular Quay with a body + 50mm lens + 32MB card (if you still have one). Fill up this card in an afternoon then come back and have a competition. Film users bring a roll of 24exp negative or something.
Best challenge of all, we can do the 50mm competition in the zoo
I think we go to the zoo to take more than 32Mb of pics.. 32Mb is only 5 shots for me... I'd at least want to use the 100-400 + 1.4x Come to think of it, I think a visit to the zoo would be good. I haven't been there since I was in Year 2... I think 19 yrs ago... maybe... can't count now.

Sounds good
Let's pick Sat 23 July(??), let's make it a whole day activity. Get there by 9am for an hour or two of good light, then lunch, then back to action from 3-5pm. How's that sound?
Sorry Zane and all non-geeks - all I see in front of me is coffee and blinking lights... oohh the comfort of blinking lights... talk to me my sweet machines... TALK TO ME Muhahaha.
Ed: I'll leave it to you in my will (or should I call it my decomissioning and migration documentation).
Thanks for the hint Zane, I'll swing by the store some time & have a yarn with Mick.
btw, what do you think it would take to get Mick on FM? I think he'd like it here.
