p.1 #1 · Rolling shutter examples at 20fps? R5/R6

If anyone is getting distortion in their images with 20fps E shutter can you please post your examples? Does this get most problematic when panning the camera? How about shooting fast moving objects going away or coming toward the camera?

Anyone shoot motocross, MTB bike, surfing, or road racing?

I don’t have any examples handy, but I have noticed artifacts when shooting my running toddler (across frame). The R5’s ES is better than most, but not as good as the a9ii’s. If I was earning money with it, I probably wouldn’t risk it.

Yes.. but I deleted them. Panning eagles in front of the dam. The dam is bent out of shape... it has massive vertical lines...looks kind of like the camera ate some magic mushrooms. Not good.

Peace

Checkout this video by an very good Australian bird photographer who has been using the R5 extensively. This is on the very topic of R5's e-shutter and whether it is suitable for action work. Short answer it is indeed usable in many cases.

I'll try to find some of my wing distortion pics later. What I see most is leaning vertical lines in my backgrounds. Here is one example of that.

The R5 is pretty good at avoiding wing distortion. It takes some very fast wing movement or fast vertical movement of the bird in the frame to show shot ruining wing distortion. However, I have lots of frames where I'm fairly certain that the last portion of the bird's wing is not quite natural but it is often hard to tell between some distortion vs the natural upturn of the outer wing tips in some wing movements.

I don't have any examples to offer you but have had rolling shutter show up on certain photos with football with the football moving through the frame to a receiver. Of course it's not in every shot and varies in degree but it does show up and sometimes it's more noticeable than others. Most people are going to cull those frames with rolling shutter so I don't know if you are going to see many examples.
It comes up more in warm up photos than game photos but generally it's two different situations. I have also had the light banding under LED and other lights with the electronic shutter. I shot hockey a couple of times under LED lights and the banding is noticeable in shots using the electronic shutter. It looks worse on the camera than it does on a computer screen. A casual observer might not notice it in a frame but it's there. I came to the R5 and R6 from two 1DX bodies and prefer the R bodies even with those quirks (banding and rolling shutter). Both the R5 and R6 to black out from time to time and you either have to switch the camera on and off or remove the battery compartment from the grip. That has happened at inopportune times on the sidelines.

I rarely use ES but when I do, I drink Dos Equis. oh wait.

I rarely use ES but the few times I have used it for BIF panning quickly, the oof trees in the background looked just like Geoff's image with the Allice in wonderland house. I've not noticed any strangeness with the subjects themselves and it's not noticeable with just leaves in the BG when panning.

I had a look through my R5 files and can't seem to find any wing distortion pics that I kept. I will make a point of getting a few wing distortion pics this weekend and post them. Ducks landing usually show it in a couple of the wing positions. I'll see if I can get my lazy backyard hummers to hover as they seem to like to just perch when feeding. But even with hummers I've shot the R5 in ES and for the wing positions you'd usually select as a keeper (full forward or full back) there isn't any distortion anyways so the distortion seen in the mid-stroke positions isn't really a big deal as I rarely select those images from a DSLR or A9 anyways when the don't have distortion.

Are you sure that wasn't taken on a very windy day and the house was just leaning a bit?

Just for fun, lets take things up a notch and show what a really slow readout speed looks like

Yeah don't use e-shutter on Sony for action (A9 and A7sIII excepted of course).

No problems and well worth checking out all his other R5 videos. He has extensively compared it to his 5DIV which was his main camera for last few years and takes them out side-by-side.

I personally don't use an e-shutter when I shoot sports, because they all suffer from banding/rolling shutter issues. Now a global shutter, that's something I'm very much looking forward too!

I've taken 10s of thousand of bird images (most in-flight images) on the R5 using electronic shutter and haven't noticed any issue. However I was using the R6 to shoot my kids kneeboarding in the summer and it was quite bad. Unfortunately I deleted all of those examples.
