p.13 #1 · A New Cheap Leica Film Camera in 2021?

I don’t buy any of this rumor unless it is just another Leica Instax.
Why would Leica tool up for a new film camera when they “sell all they make” film Ms?

They already canned the superior M7 because the customer base wanted old school.

I use the M7s as well as the Mp, MA etc and as a shooter i.e where u are just concerned to get the shot, the M7 rules.
“but but batteries!” Who cares? Carry more they are tiny and last a long time. Those whiners dont complain about having to carry extra film which runs out way sooner than batteries!
And that is why I dont see a fancy new M film camera coming out. The base has already rejected that.

For me there are two options - a new CM/Minilux or a new Instax. I see this as another click bait rumor or an Instax.

This rumor is different because it was started by Steven over on Leica Forum. He was pretty accurate with the new product information before he was banned. I think Leica Rumors just trots this rumor out every few months to get clicks, though.

Why was he actually banned? His information was usually spot on.

I see Leica capable of releasing some kind of special edition of the M6. I don't believe in a brand new and/or a cheap film camera.

He started posting M11 photos early, and things went south when he was asked him to stop.

Re: the film camera – I think he said as much, that it would be some sort of special edition/re-issue film camera.

I could not agree more. When I was shooting film Ms as my main cameras, I switched to the M7 and never regretted it.
Nowadays, I use the M5 more but this is just for fun.

Thanks.
So a limited edition M6. Which I assume would be a cosmetically changed MP.

It will sell out instantly as all Leica limited editions do. But this doesn't advance the M series, it would just be another re-hash with limited #s. And most probably more expensive than the MP.

We’ll see.

I don’t think it would be a changed MP, it would literally be one of the original M6 designs with special markings. They can still make the exact same camera, just like they do when they reissue a vintage lens. This will be great for owners of used M6 bodies since it would provide a new source for the meter circuit boards, of which there is no longer a supply.

Agree that it will be as much or more than an MP.

That says MP on the top plate, has an on/off switch from an M7, canted rewind, not sure where the shutter speed dial came from..

Could have been an a-la-carte MP with an M7 top plate and rewind knob, but it's doubtful since that shutter dial never existed before. Might be the new MP that picks up where the M7 left off.

For me to be interested in a new MP, it actually needs to have functional differences/improvements.

Agreed – things like 1/4,000 sec., easier film loading, more accurate meter, improved rangefinder, etc.

Of course it could end up just being an M6 re-issue.

I find the film loading extremely easy. Just follow the pictogram Leica thoughtfully provides on the camera base. Drop film in, extend film into tulip spool, close camera, advance film. Works for me every single time and easier than regular 35mm cameras where you need to thread the film etc.

Nope, if I don't push the film all the way up so that the silver bar at the bottom shows, the film gets mangled on the spool. Gotta be very deliberate. The back of the camera that flops all around is annoying to me, as is having to hold it tight against the camera while re-attaching the base plate so as to properly catch its corner closest to the spool versus mash into it. The whole process feels like I need three or four hands to do it right Yeah, I mean I can do it, it's just way more convoluted than other film cameras I've used.
