On average, it is the heaviest eagle in the world, at about 5 to 9 kg (11 to 20 lb).
Steller's sea eagle is listed as vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)'s Red List of Threatened species.

Captured during my Japan Winter Photography Workshops in Hokkaido.

Beautiful. Thanks for posting, I have never seen this eagle. I had thought the golden eagle was the largest. These guys are lovely.

Your images are truly wonderful, Nikolas - I love every single one of them!

I was fortunate enough to see and photograph them off Hokkaido fairly close to the Russian border some years ago and yes, they are imposing alright.

Yeap...On average, it is the heaviest eagle in the world but may be below the harpy eagle (Harpia harpyja) and Philippine eagle (Pithecophaga jefferyi) in some standard measurements (wikipedia).

I have seen the harpy and I think this steller is more "robust".

Yeap, close to russian border...or even in the japanese coast now because of climate change...just roosting on power line cables!
