If they release a high IQ + somewhat compact 28mm E-mount, they would be alone in the game. Hard to believe this is not obvious. Make one in M-mount too as a replacement to the CV 28/2 Ultron.

Yes, the 28mm has been on the wishlist for so long that I don't have high expectations anymore but I hope they come to recognize that gap finally in 2021. Indeed a new 28mm would make sense in both E and VM. If CP+ really happens end of February 2021 that could be the timing for the next new release announcements.

I also still think that they will likely come up with some new APO-Lanthar release in the 75mm-90mm range similar to 50/2 in the next year or so.

I Agree.

I think Cosina keep releasing new E-mount glass every year but their M-mount glass sales have improved relative to E-mount in the last 1-2 years perhaps because other mirrorless FF users buying and adapting them too. Bestselling CV M-mount glass in Japan is still by far the 40/1.4. In E-mount it's 50/2, 65/2, 35/1.4 classic, 40/1.2 SE. There might be more emphasis on VM releases going forward but I think E-mount will also keep getting new releases. Might be harder to come up with very unique and bestselling E-mount offerings now due to more competition though.
.

Laowa, with their M mount offerings appeal to all mirrorless users. They are also trolling Cosina with their wide angles.

Voigtlander's Leica M mount lens "APO-LANTHAR 50mm F2 Aspherical VM" will be announced soon.#噂

This is such good news for all of us who prefer other systems than Sony E or at least don't want to commit to it

Hope they didn't have to make compromises to make it fit M-mount.

Let's hope it has negligible focus shift so it can be focussed accurately at all apertures with the rangefinder on the Leica's...

Voigtlander!Can you hear me?

Where is the revised Apo Lanthar 180/4 for Sony E?

Or Nokton 75/1.5 in E mount"?

Why only 50mm,35mm and 21 lenses in the agenda lately?

A 28mm Nokton VM would be a nice addition to the current Nokton offerings...

Love that CV keeps rocking with new M-mount releases and further improved lens versions for likely more reasonable prices. This will keep Leica and Zeiss M-lens prices in check to some degree at least.

This is definitely good news for other mounts. The only negative is that the 50/2 APO VM won't perform "optimally" with thicker stack sensors. (Canon, Nikon, Fuji). It will still be great though, especially stopped down a bit.

Folks used to buy m mount lenses to be able to use it in different bodies (Sony, Canon, etc).

Does anyone think that e mount, specially the manual focus ones, will dethrone m mount as the universal mount for those who choose to adapt MF lenses?

I don't think so. Sony E mount lenses can be used on Sony E-mount and Nikon Z mount and nothing else AFAIK. Canon's new RF mount and the L mount (used by Sigma, Panasonic, and Leica) actually has a slightly longer registration distance (the distance from the mount to the sensor) than Sony E mount, so if adapters were ever developed for Sony E mount lens for these mounts they would work like having a permanent extension tube or the adapter would need glass that could degrade performance. I doubt such adapters will ever be made.

As it stands Leica M mount has only a bit longer registration distance and will work will all the mirrorless mounts, so these are still the lenses that can be adapted to everything. Just because the lenses can be adapted doesn't mean you will see optimal performance, however, and if you adapt it is wise to understand how that particular lens will work with you specific camera.

The 50/2 APO E-mount is not under-corrected for spherical aberration and therefore shows non-detectable focus shift. I'm sure the VM mount will perform similarly if not the same on a Leica sensor. The CV 50/2 VM could be a great choice for those upgrading to the new M10-R.

This is the expected performance on a high megapixel sensor:

I believe E-mount is already the much more common and used one at this point. The Leica M mount is more niche and will always be, but it has been a standard since many decades and so far survives much longer than other brand camera mount. M mount will remain in a foreseeable future, too. Advantage of M-mount over E-mount is that M-mount can be adapted to all kind of MLC systems. E-mount is much more limited when trying to adapt outside the Sony E-mount environment. This was one reason why I personally never vested in E-mount lenses even after I bought a Sony MLC. I wanted to be flexible later to switch to any other MLC brand without getting rid of E-mount designated lenses.

I'm curious what it's size will be. One of the main advantages of a rangefinder is compactness..... And this seems to be lost on Voigtländer at times

I've been wanting to mount the 50 apo on my gfx due to the perfect f/2.8. Now I can try it with the VM-GF adapter.

The 50/2 APO in VM is very welcomed, a 28/2 APO I'm E and VM should also be made, I'd also like to see the E mount 110 APO made into a VM mount version.

I always found Voigtlander's approach to lens lines to be all over the map, the 35/1.7 and a few others have a body the that doesn't match the other lenses in the lineup, I think it hurts sales when there is a big difference in ergonomics, I know I have resisted or avoided buying into a lens line because lenses I'm interested in are missing or because the lens has a different body style.

I prefer the VM lenses over E mount for freedom in the future to jump to a different body should another brand releases a body I want more than what Sony has on offer, I don't think I'm alone with that desire for freedom in camera choices without having to sell and then buy whole new lens lineups.

Perhaps Voigtlander has recognized that the other mounts are now becoming viable markets for their lenses, will they release Z and RF mount lenses alongside the E mount lenses? Time will tell I suppose.

The E mount version is 364g with a diameter of 62.6mm and a length of 61.3mm, but the VM mount will almost certainly be a little lighter and shorter (the longer flange distance for Leica M mean the lens almost has to be a little shorter and therefore lighter). Here are the 50, 40, and 35 mm lenses in both E mount and VM mount from Voigtlander:

50 f/1.2 E-mount (new SE lighter version) 387g, 66.5 diameter, 59.9 length; VM mount 344g, 63.3 diameter, and 49 length
40 f/1.2 E-mount (new SE lighter version) 340g, 66.5 diameter, 51.9 length; VM mount 315g, 60.8 diameter, and 43.3 length
35 f/1.4 E-mount (older non-SE lens) 262g, 67.0 diameter, 39.6 length; VM mount 189g, 55 diameter, 28.5 length
35 f/.12 E-mount (new SE lighter version) 375g, 67.4 diameter, 68.5 length; VM mount 332g, 60.8, 50.5 length

I think from this pattern we can infer the new VM 50 f/2 APO will weigh about 300-320g, will have about a 56-60mm diameter and will be about 49-51mm long. That would put it as slightly larger than the Leica M 50 f/2 APO which weighs in at 300g (with a built-in hood), has a 53mm diameter, and is 47mm long. Still, personally that small increase in size for the massive decrease in price and very similar performance for me clearly tips the scale to the Voigtlander. Of course YMMV.

Might be the first their lens I buy new! I do have an old 50/1.5 in ltm which I share between a7 and m4, and it’s a bit heavy and a bit underwhelming on 42mp... I we’re always looking at lanthar and regretting it’s not an M lens!

Well, we've been enjoying the E mount version for what, about a year now? I guess we should share the joy.

It will disappoint in terms of coverage.

I agree it seems quite unlikely that it will cover the image circle, but I would still like to see how it does with the Laowa magic format converter. With the converter it will cover the image circle and the lens is such a strong performer it might still be a decent option. Although I think it is quite possible that it may not be much if any better than the GF 63 f/2.8 (it would be the equivalent of a 70 f/2.8 with the Laowa converter).
