I'm no professional but to me what makes the Sigma 35/1.2 special is not the wide-ness, it's the rendering of the images it produces. It's the lens that made me understand what rendering even is.
If the 35GM renders anything like the 24GM, it'll be great but a different beast than the Sigma, and for reasons unrelated to the aperture. Not inferior just a different feeling. Like people have mentioned above, the main quality of a photo is the emotion it evokes.

Dont matter if your a Pro or not actually sometimes I wish I was not as im restricted sometimes but really all that matters is to get or evoke that feeling from the rendering and the bokeh look to enhance the image. Its so overlooked or maybe folks just dont understand it. Typically smoother bokeh usually equals more 3d look. That example above is perfect as it drives your eye immediately to the guy in the boat. No BS around you eye cant go anywhere else. Thats exactly what you want. This is about composition, light ,color, smoothness all related to take the viewers eye directly to the target or subject. Getting all those elements in a image is really the goal. As one learns photography better and better you learn how to control all those great things to bring the image out. You will get to a point you dont even think about it , it just happens. Good conversation

If it's true, then if there has been some astonishing optical breakthrough and it really is that small and good, then I could get rid of my Sigma and smaller 35 lens and just have a "Goldilocks" lens. That's the excited option.
But if it's true, more likely it'd need severe compromises of the kind you mention. That's the disappointed option.

I'm curious to see what Sony comes up with.
I thought you would be more interested in the new Sigma Series I lenses since it's something we wanted for a long time. High IQ lenses that are not f/1.4 big.
However, if the 35/1.4 and 16/1.8 GM lenses are indeed similar in size to the 24/1.4 GM, perhaps Sony found the perfect balance between size, IQ and speed.
I am curious, why can't Sony just increase vignetting and wouldn't that make up for most of the rumored size decrease?
As I understand it, 35mm and up is the breaking point at which mirrorless can no longer take advantage of the lack of a mirrorbox, so we can't get compact lenses in this range like we do wides--we are back to SLR size lenses.
But, lenses like ZM 35 1.4 and CV 35 1.7 offer excellent IQ across the frame wide open and are pretty tiny (compared to a ZA 35/1.4 and especially Sigma 35/1.2). The way they do this seems to be having RF levels of vignetting--which is a tradeoff I love. They both have CA as well, but so does the GM 24, even at 2.8 I have seen some axial CA if the situation is demanding enough.
Obviously, complete CA suppression, coma, bokeh and transitions and such require more complex and larger designs (along with AF and sealing). But the GM 24 shows astigmatism, longitudinal and lateral CA, some very minor outlining and onion rings and heavy vignetting anyway.
So I guess my question is, though perhaps simplistic, can't Sony release a 35 1.4 GM and make most of the compromise with vignetting and keep the package relatively small? At least much smaller than the ZA 35/1.4.
Zeiss and CV seem to offer fairly high degrees of correction. And the rendering on the 35/1.7 in particular is fairly smooth and pleasant (minus the loads of cat's eye).

I am indeed very interested in the I series; my expectation is I’ll end up with two AF 35s, the sigma 1.2 and the new I series. But the rumour abiut the size of the GM made me think that if (unlikely) it’s true and very similar in size to the gm24 and still great, it could replace both. But it wouldn’t take much more size over the 24 for it to be too big for an all purpose lens for me, the 24GM only just makes it into my travel bag...

To add to the current and upcoming choices, I am struggling to assess the the Tamron SP 35mm f/1.4 adapted to Sony. I already have Canon and Nikon autofocus adapters. At currently $699 at B&H, it seems like an irresistible deal. What do you think?

We do have great 35mm's. It's just one is a manual lens CV351.2 ,the other is the 24GM in crop mode, and the third you need a Sherpa to help carry it around (Sigma 35mm 1.2)

I beginning to think the dearth of 35's are made up of some failed attempts at making a 28. "I don't know what happened, we were designing a 28mm lens and somehow it ended up being another 35...."

I'm thinking that they probably release this 35mm and then they'll update the 50 with a GM; I don't think it's necessary as the ZA is crazy good, but it makes sense they want consistency across the line. Hopefully after that 28mm will be high on the list of priorities since everything other than 300mm+ (assuming we also get that rumored 16GM) will be more or less covered.

I would love to see a 28GM, but unfortunately I don't think everything other than a 50mm GM is covered. There are rumors and I kind of expect an ultra wide GM, something like a 14mm or 16mm f/1.8. Then there is the huge gap between 135mm and 400mm that could certainly use a lens or two. I expect a 300 f/2.8 before too long, but something like a 200 f/2 I think would be welcome as well. I also think a 500 f/4 may come before a 28 GM. So by my count that means we will probably see four or five GM lenses before we will see a 28 GM and that does not include things like a possible Mark II version of the 85 GM with faster AF motor(s). So sadly I think we are potentially 3 years or so away from getting a 28 GM even though this is a lens I would very much like to see.

I sincerely hope you are right about the telephotos as I agree that Sony's biggest holes are telephoto primes between 135 and 400 with the greatest need at 200 and 300mm (despite the excellent 100-400 and 200-600 zooms).

Some colleagues use the Sigma 28/1.4 Art. Fantastic lens, too, nice rendering, not too expensive and AF is fast and reliable, too. It is not the smallest lens, but still smaller than the 35/1.2 ;-)
