Before you format from your computer, document the exact space available. Then do the format, then check the space available. If less, it found bad sectors and omitted them from the table.
Some formatting tools have a "repair" option... I would avoid that one and just have the questionable sectors hidden.

Thank you. That’s why CPS aust told me to select the more advanced level 2 in Apple’s Disk utility tool. I didn’t check the file size difference but I am sure it would have found the bad sectors. The next few days on photographing will see if it really works or fixed the problem. My lockup issue is really card related and not the camera and may be different issue with others that are having lockup issue. I had no problems until my card started having bad sectors. Oh I forgot to say when my camera first experience issue WITH LOCKUP, the camera switched cards automatically to SD SDXC II card and message saying CFExpress was full when in fact it had only 100 or so images on a 128 gig card.

Ok I think what the Apple disk utility does is the program does a better job in low level format to get rid of bad sectors than what the camera in R5 can do. After formatting in the computer, I then reformat the cards in R5 just to make sure everything is compatible. I will know when I go for another outing over the weekend.
My camera never had lockup’s until one day when one of the images became corrupted. Since that I kept having lockup’s with that card despite doing the low level format on that card using the R5 low level option.

On a whim I updated the camera along with the 100-400 is ii lens. Overall, the af seems a bit more “snappy” and more settled in servo. Gone is the “clunk” which I occasionally heard when powering down. The af changes seem to apply to other lenses I tested including a 500 f4 and 70-200. Maybe there were some behind the scenes adjustments?

I updated via USB with the Canon Utility. But it seems they still have some issues to address - the interval timer not working when back button focus is set does not seem to be fixed.
1.2.0 has fixed this for me. Just installed and did a quick timelapse test on my R5 *WITH* back-button-only-focus ENABLED. It finally works!

I have not updated to the latest FW. For me, that "clunk" is the closing of shutter at shutdown, which is one of the menu options. When I first received the camera, the default was not to close the shutter. Do you hear this sound when option is set to close shutter at shutdown?
