Updated my R6 last night. No immediate changes noticed, but everything went smoothly.

Same here but I did see the EVF brightness was reset to auto. I'll be shooting this afternoon so hopefully all goes well.

Hmmm...

"During continuous shooting black frames will be inserted between frames in the viewfinder and live view.
This will improve the visibility of moving subjects in live view and in the viewfinder."

At first blush that sounds like an Oxymoron.
I think they could have worded that a bit better by saying "will improve ability to track moving subjects"
At least that's what I think they meant to say.

Might they have quietly fixed the lock-up issue and just not mention it to save face?
Beta testers, please let us know if you have any more lock-ups.

Still no 1080 / 120

Damn, Canon still hasn't fixed the problem where the camera will not take good pictures on it's own without user input.

You need an iPhone for that...

Yes, I did see that as well, and immediately changed it back to full brightness (I like my EVF bright!)

"When using high-speed or low-speed continuous shooting modes, in Drive Mode with [High-Speed Display: OFF], the visibility of the subject within the frame has been improved when shooting moving objects.*
*During continuous shooting black frames will be inserted between frames in the viewfinder and live view. This will improve the visibility of moving subjects in live view and in the viewfinder."

I assume this is applicable in mechanical mode only which I rarely used as I don't like the slide show effect. I was quite frustrated actually. For me, can't keep track of small and quick flying birds (kestrels...) when I tried to use this mode. Wonder if "I" will experience any tracking improvement with this FW.

Will shoot more in mechanical mode this pm before I apply the new FW.

I'm not sure how I'll wind up. When I first got the camera, I thought it should have had auto brightness for both EVF and LCD. I wound up setting my EVF to 4 which seems to work well, but can be a bit blinding in low light. So auto might help there. I can see the benefit in having consistent EVF brightness levels making it easier to adjust exposure by eye. We'll see how I feel after a bit of use. I'd really like to configure the rate button, which I never use, as a "turbo" button for screen brightness, giving me max brightness for some period of time.

Remember this update says it is only for High-Speed Display set to OFF. I've actually never tried OFF so I'm not even sure what it does on previous FW. But I will try it out on 1.1 before going to 1.2.

Doesn't sound like it is going to affect HSD ON which I think is a better setting usually (but again haven't tested) for shooting action. I know on my Sony cameras if I decrease the EVF refresh I have a very hard time tracking...even a hummingbird that all of a sudden leaves one flower and goes to a nearby one you often don't see which way it moved and have to take your eye away from the EVF to find it again. So that is why I hadn't even bothered to try HSD OFF on the R5.

Any comments on the update? Though I am an early adopter, a beta tester I am not.

Dang I was hoping for CF express startup lag fixes similar to those implemented on the 1DX III recently :/

Ok shot the kestrel in mechanical high speed all afternoon with HSD set to on/off before FW update. HSD OFF is hopeless for BIF. HSD ON is better but doesn’t work for me. There is really no incentive for me to run this update.

You should contact Canon. Users on this forum with consistent lockups have had their cameras serviced by replacing a board in the camera.

Thank you for reply

I rang Canon CPS and they told me to format my card in Apple disk utility (using level 2). I think that should fixed it. I only started getting lock ups after one of my raw images was corrupted. It makes sense.

So we aren’t supposed to format using the R5? What format using the disk utility. I had a few lockups in the first few days but none since. I have not tried it since the FW update.

Ok I think what the Apple disk utility does is the program does a better job in low level format to get rid of bad sectors than what the camera in R5 can do. After formatting in the computer, I then reformat the cards in R5 just to make sure everything is compatible. I will know when I go for another outing over the weekend.
My camera never had lockup’s until one day when one of the images became corrupted. Since that I kept having lockup’s with that card despite doing the low level format on that card using the R5 low level option.

Before you format from your computer, document the exact space available. Then do the format, then check the space available. If less, it found bad sectors and omitted them from the table.

Some formatting tools have a "repair" option... I would avoid that one and just have the questionable sectors hidden.
