Anyone using zebras for manual focusing on R5 for still pictures?

I'm curious why you wouldn't use AF on zebras. Does the R5 have trouble with the autonomic head/eye detection?

HA HA, this is not the animal zebra but an exposure tool called zebras to help you adjust exposure before or during movie recording, you can display a striped pattern over or around image areas of a specified brightness. Helps to avoid over exposure. I do not believe it works in still mode, I thought just video. I could be wrong as I never tried it in still mode.

I'm sure the R5 is excellent for zebra photography

Seriously though even my old GH1 was better than dslr for mf lenses, and it didn't have any focusing aids other than being able to zoom in in the EVF. Even that helped and it is easier to see if it's in focus even if you are not using it. So I'd think that the R5 should be good using older mf lenses, if that's what you are asking.

Zebras work better on zebras than AF, especially if you change their color .

@op, Yes I have to use focus peaking (ie zebras?) when using my 50 1.2 MF lens. However there must be a real question that has to be answered, because this thread is asking a question that is a bit too generic, It is almost like asking people if they ever smash the gas pedal down on a sports car. I feel. Is there something more specific that you want to know about?

Focus peaking is not the same as zebras, peaking is for focus and zebras is for exposure. Peaking will work with MF for stills but zebras will not work for stills only video with R5.

Focus peaking won't work in magnified view. Zebras won't work in still mode. Other brands allow for this. Big bummer.

Yes, zebras won’t work on stills on the R5 unlike my Sony gear. Hoping they can create this in a FW update.

I was watching someone using it on a sony which prompted the question. Thanks for answering question about zebras. I guess I need to start over and ask about focus peaking.

I was thinking focus as I do manual focus for macro. Not familiar with focus peaking or zebras. My r5 is the first camera I've had with that capability.

They are both covered in your Owner's Manual, and both have been on many cameras for years.

Zebras don't help with focusing so I don't understand where that comes from. Focus peaking does, as does 5x/10x loupe mode. Both help with manual focus pretty well, and are able to be engaged pre-shot.

Zebras are for exposure warnings. Focus peaking is for manual focus. I use focus peaking for manual focus lenses that don't connect with the EF-RF adapter. For the latter, I prefer the arrows to aid manual focus.

I don't use zebras for my exposure but that's largely because I haven't given it any thought yet. I may in the future, as I've done with some other mirrorless cameras. Then again, I'm a little wary of having too much info in my view as it takes away from seeing the scene.

Zebras work only in movie mode on Canon cameras, for god knows what reason. Having zebras even in still mode is the one thing I miss the most about my Sony cameras.

That and the lack of an AA filter, buttons which are nearly infinitely programable, the 200-600...

Didn’t know that. Strange.

There are advantages and disadvantages to every system. If I had a ton of Sony glass, I'd be enjoying my a9(ii), a7riv, or whatever and happily awaiting the a1. If I had a bunch of Canon glass (and I do), I'd be enjoying my R5 (am) with a bunch of adapted EF glass and awaiting the releases of the RF big whites and hopefully meaningful FW updates. Quite frankly, either system is capable of producing great images in the right hands.

Interestingly, and I know this sounds heretical but the R5 can be considered as a single body replacement for the a9(ii) and a7riv. When I shot Sony and wanted to go out with only one body, I used to stare at the two of them and decide what it was I wanted to shoot that day. Perched birds, static wildlife, landscapes called for the a7riv, fast moving objects (sports) and BIF the a9 was the ticket. The R5 covers all applications though if one is out shooting seriously, multiple bodies with different FL lenses are required so a single R5 is insufficient (for now, I'm using my 5dmkiv).

Best wishes and there are no regrets with capturing and creating fantastic images.
