Received mine and used it a little and so far I like it. While the EVF is probably its weak spot I have no real issues with it and I wear glasses. I can see all the settings and what I am framing. Nice little camera. Tomorrow I will get out and really put it through its paces. Oh and the build quality seems great. I think it will serve its purpose for a smaller kit and a companion and or alternative to my R4. Matches up great with the 20mm 1.8 too. Only lens I have tried on it so far.

I've used mine for a week now and EVF is working well for me for MF shooting. I've been only using my new Voigtländer Nokton 50/1.5 II (VM) and Voigtländer Color-Skopar 21/3.5 (E-mount) lenses so far and both work wonderfully with the camera (balance is very nice with these small lenses) in my opinion. Really happy with the JPEG files I'm getting straight from camera too. I'm hoping for C1 Pro to start supporting this new camera soon. So far couldn't edit Raw files with it (although I guess it could be possible by manipulating the EXIF data to make it look like e.g. A73).

Only once in very bright sunlight when sun was shining from a relatively low angle from my left side I had some light intruding with my focusing since there is no real eyecup with the EVF and I had to adjust my shooting position a bit to be able to see clearly through the EVF. In other conditions I've not had any problems focusing with the EVF. I wear glasses all the time (also when shooting).

I'm really enjoying the camera for walk-around use and I'll probably use it as my main camera from now on since I'm mostly shooting this way these days.

p.2 #3 · A7C Shipped! (Now Received! -- First Impressions)

I have now had my A7C for a few days and have formed my impressions. I like the camera a lot, and I am going to keep it. Following is what I think about it:

1. Size---it is smaller and it feels both smaller and lighter in use. It is handier than my A9 or A7R4. I like picking it up, and the slight simplification of the controls also makes it quicker to use, probably because of the modes that one chooses to use it in.

It does not feel like a NEX-7 in the hand. It is thicker and a bit boxier. So that was a little bit of a disappointment, but probably inevitable given the full frame geometries. It seems very well-made with high quality fit and finish.

2. Image quality---Image quality is excellent. At the ISOs at which I mostly shoot, it seems to have slightly better IQ than the A9 and to handle low light images better than the A7R4. Colors seem very lovely to me, which I missed a bit when I sold my A7III. It is nice to have them back. I've posted a sample below.

3. Autofocus---AF is excellent, better than the A7III, better (I think) than the A7R4, not quite as good as the A9. Real Time Tracking and Eye AF change the way I shoot, and this is a strong implementation of both. The scan rate is not as fast as the A9, so silent shutter is not friendly to LED lights, which produce banding, and presumably not to the kinds of motion that produce rolling shutter effects. There is still a place for the A9, and I expect that the A9 series is still the body where Sony will produce the next generation of interesting photographic innovation.

4. EVF and LCD---The EVF is fine and very useable. I did not have any difficulties in actual use with either its size or magnification, though one will notice that it is smaller than the other EVFs in the 7 and 9 series cameras. I did have a small problem, as Juha also notes above, with the absence of an eye-cup, in exactly the situation that Juha describes--strong sunlight coming from the left. In that situation, I needed to position my hand to block the sunlight from interfering with the EVF. Small problem, but an eyecup would fix it. This is not a problem with the EVF per se. The LCD seems fine to me. I didn't notice anything different about using it except that it is a bit smaller, as one would expect. This didn't matter to me in use.

5. Lenses used---I have been using the Sony smaller lenses with it--the 28/2, 35/1.8, 55/1.8, and 85/1.8. These fit the camera and feel good in the hand, and focus very quickly and accurately. Although I haven't used them as much, the 20/1.8 and the 24/1.8 also fit very well. All of the Loxia, many of the Voigtlanders, the Sony 35/2.8, the Samyang 1.8 series and the Samyang 18/2.8, and the Tamron 2.8 series of lenses should all fit this camera especially well. Perhaps surprisingly, the Batis, which I have tried on, also handle very well on the A7C--they have more diameter than the above lenses but are quite light and also short (w/o their hoods on) and the combination is nice in the hand and nicely balanced in terms of handling. But they are of course a bit larger than the preceding lenses.

6. Overall---My impressions are very favorable. I have used it for family portraits, still lifes, landscapes, and animals, and it has handled all of those situation very nicely. This camera, to me so far, is distinguished by being very useable and transparent. It is quick to be picked up and easy to shoot while still providing outstanding image quality and superlative controls over shooting. It's autofocus is really excellent and makes it easy to get sharp focus exactly where you want it; it is sticky and will capture moving subjects accurately. The A7C does not include any major technological innovations, but it is very, very useable and I think that is where Sony has in fact innovated with this camera. Its size, lightness, and excellent autofocus are the keys to this heightened usability. It is a perfect travel camera, great family camera, and an excellent take-anywhere camera that is well integrated and will easily yield very high quality images.

Here is a sample from my first day of shooting with the A7C. This is a straight unprocessed and unadjusted image:

Quick question as I run into LED lighting a lot . If silent shutter is lacking here because of banding does it have a anti flicker control for mechanical shutter. This could be a deal breaker for me, 1 SD card does not help but this one is a concern

Safe bet is that if the A7 III would not work for you in those cases then this will not work either.

Hi Guy.

Yes, the A7C has an anti-flicker setting. It is on page 14 of the first menu section.

Keep in mind there are only two shutter settings on this camera: full electronic shutter, and electronic first curtain shutter. There is no full mechanical shutter mode. That is certainly a limitation one should be aware of. For me it isn't a deal breaker, but each person will have to decide that for themselves.

Personally I usually shoot in EFCS, and when I don't I almost always use full electronic shutter these days (at least with my Sony cameras), but if somebody uses full mechanical shutter a lot, then they should think carefully if the limitations of the shutter will be a problem for them.

Guy, it doesn't function like the A7 III. The A7 III has a full mechanical shutter you can use. This camera does not.

Thanks Steve I was not aware of that. I really have not been paying much attention to it. That rules this out for this type of work. I need real mechanical shutter for flash work as well. Size and weight savings is not the goal on this gig either. Thanks everyone, talked me off the mountain.

Still like the idea of it though, might be simply just a nice travel kit

Nice point and explanation, Steve. I personally almost never use full mechanical and never use flash and I am almost always in full silent on my A9. But for people who do need mechanical, it would make a difference.

[EDIT] The key issue for me on a mechanical shutter in other than the A9 is the banding effect with LED lights. I wonder if the EFCS/mechanical-second in the A7C would or would not be ok for LED lights. It could produce half the banding effect. I haven't tested this yet. It would be an important point for a fair number of people, especially as a family camera.

[EDIT] However, I note that the A7C does have an anti-flicker setting, so it is quite possible that it does not produce any banding effect.

Guy, EFCS will trigger a flash system just fine; it is the full electronic shutter that doesn’t. Just FYI, of course. I don’t have this camera but I believe that if you set the electronic shutter on your camera and you connect a compatible flash, the shutter mode would automatically switch to EFCS.

Steve, I shoot full mechanical on my a7r2. As I understand it (though I haven't followed it much), the downside of the A7c implementation is that at very high shutter speeds the bokeh shape can be compromised when shooting at large f-stops and high shutter speeds? Are they are other practical implications for a non-mechanical only shutter if I don't use any flashes? Thanks in advance.

Leaning towards picking up an a7c...the EVF seems to not be as much of a deal breaker for many. Waiting to get my hands on one.

The key question for me is whether the EFCS/Mechanical-Second in the A7C does or does not produce a banding effect with LED lights. As I understand the physics of the process, one might reasonably assume that the A7C shutter would produce half the LED banding effect of a full electronic/silent shutter. But I don't know how this actually works and what effect it produces on the A7C. It does seem like an important consideration, for Guy as well as for others.

Now on the A9 on this gig I could shoot full electronic shutter under LED and not get any banding . . My A7rIV and A7 III not the case , so I had to shoot with full mechanical which kinda sucked because it's adding wear and tear on shutter. 20k per show that's 40K per year. Why I started to rent in the last few years.

Oh if anyone has the 70-200 2.8 just try it in crop mode if you would be so kind.

Guy, for that shoot I think you might prefer renting an A9. Another limitation you should be aware of for this shoot is the max flash sync speed is 1/160. If you use flash a lot this may well not be the best camera. It is probably fine for occasional flash use, however.
My use will be predominantly for travel and I don’t even take a flash when travelling and if I did I would take a different camera.
By the way for your shoot you might consider renting a Minolta 200 f/2.8 APO. It is supposed to work much better on the new LAEA5 adapter. Fred is testing that out now. You might want to follow his tests that I believe are coming soon.

I think there will be a downside of some effects on the bokeh at high shutter speeds in EFCS, but you should be able to avoid those problems by switching to full electronic shutter. That mode should be free of bokeh issues but could show distortion issues with faster moving subjects and banding issues with some lights. I think it is likely that when these problems with the electronic shutter are an issue you can use EFCS and when you have high shutter speeds and wide apertures and EFCS is a problem you can use the electronic shutter. There is, however, some chance that you need high shutter speeds with wide apertures and you are shooting pretty fast quickly moving subjects when both modes could show problems.

Well on the A7rIII the anti flicker mode doesn't work in Silent shooting mode and as far as I know the only cameras that you can safely shoot totally silently and not get flicker are either the A9 or A9II. This and the focusing are the main reason I own one and used you can get them for little more than the A7c as I bought mine mint for £2200. Here in the UK the only way to avoid flicker in silent mode is either to shoot at 1/100sec or 1/50sec shutter speeds under LED or fluorescent lighting

As I understand it the anti-flicker mode tries to get a shutter speed that matches the flickering of the lights. This ought to be easier with EFCS for the reasons you mention, but this anti-flicker mode may not work with all lights. Mechanical shutter might well be useful if the anti-flicker mode doesn’t work with particular lights. That won’t be an option with this camera.
