p.6 #1 · Any A7RIV users tried or brought the Canon R5

These are of course strange times we live through, people get testy, it's understandable. My contribution here would be to ask why Canon-centric threads pop up like mushrooms on a regular basis - on the Sony forum - when no reciprocity is occurring on the Canon forum?

It's highly likely to produce some verbal argy bargy, people bond with their brands, having spent thousands on their equipment. It seems few Sony users care much for whatever Canon is doing, and if they did the forum drop down menu is close at hand. Cheers all.

you and geoff are posting brand mis-generalizations that are poorly informed and not logical.

you guys don't shoots sports, so neither of you understands that the a9ii upgrades are largely targeted at shooters who need to get jpegs out asap, for example with the best voice annotation capability on the market, aka at the olympics.

a9ii is for people who need the best light flicker control of any camera on the market, no other camera has that ability even with the mechanical shutter, and sony did it with the electronic shutter... claiming that market-leading capabilities like those don't "advance the narrative" is
...Show more

I've largely stayed on the sidelines - literally and figuratively - since the days of manual focus and film. Originally was a Nikon shooter and when Canon introduced the USM AF motors for lenses, I switched and stayed with them until abandoning Canon in favor of Sony a little more than a year ago. Years ago, even with 6-8mp cameras the .jpgs were a bear to send over FTP because of the file sizes. Without a doubt, if I were working today, the R5 would not be my choice for a sideline camera for many reasons. Though the a9(ii) performs magnificently in many respects and I know people who employ it successfully at every level, if I were still shooting freelance or agency for sports (retired that segment just after the release of the 1dx), I would probably use whatever they afforded me or likely would use a pro-DSLR for reliability, battery life, etc. Perhaps with the slated pro-MILC cameras on the drawing boards, I would be compelled to switch?

With respect to wildlife and BIF, for me the a9(ii) is still a great contender as its AF which is still second to none as well as for all of the reasons mentioned. The big drawback IMHO is the limitation in the ability to crop. For most users and 99% of the images posted on the web it doesn't matter and the limitation only comes into play when printing large or having to crop significantly. That's why I was so intrigued with the a7riv and while I loved its file sizes (after coming to grips with the noise), it was hampered by the AF, inability to play nice with the 200-600 (supposedly resolved), slow sensor read out leading to rolling shutter and evf issues.

The best value IMHO for one wanting to shoot wildlife is to pick up an a9 and 200-600. There is nothing on the market which will perform as well for the $.

Wanting more MP is not an indictment on Sony or the technology. Put 45 mp in the a9(III) and I'll be one of the first in line to buy one. But it isn't here and Canon came to market with a camera which everyone is loving to hate; some of the criticism is well deserved and some of it is not. For stills, and that is 99% of what I shoot, it is a remarkable camera. Yes,the sensor read out increases the risk of rolling shutter compared to the a9(ii), though my subjects are BIF, perched birds, wildlife, and not toy fans on a table. My real life experience suggests that for these applications rolling shutter is not usually an issue unlike the a7riv. Yes, the presence of an AA filter has an effect on sharpness, though that is offset by the "Canon colors" and I find the images need less overall PP. There are always trade-offs and compromises and compared to the a7riv it is so much better for the BIF/Wildlife application.

For sports, the R5's rolling shutter is a problem and one has to use MS which is not as good as the a9(ii) MS for reasons discussed. As an aside, the EVF on the R5 is so much nicer than the a9(ii) both in terms of brightness, resolution, color, etc. Given many of my lenses date back to my pro days, after the the market for glass collapsed, I didn't bother to part with them. This obviously, had a significant influence on my decision to move back to Canon. $13k is a lot of cash to part with for a Sony 600 f/4 and the lack of an extensive array of more affordable long Sony glass is a hindrance for many people. Again, for the $ an a9 + 200-600 is the best value on the market for the BIF/Wildlife segment.

In my analysis, I care more about the results than the brand. If my current car was a Lexus and then Infinity came out with a model which fit my needs better, I would not hesitate to switch. If one had to buy a collection of expensive wheels separately which only fit a particular car manufacturer, that would factor into my decision making. At the end of the day, cameras are tools which we use for enjoyment, as a source of income, and fulfillment. Contrary to what the manufacturers might peddle, the brands don't define the photographer.

A car swap with trade-in may take one hour, once you decide. How long will it take to advertise, negotiate, sell and post 10-20 lenses and say two cameras, and how much will you lose? Remember, Canon cameras will not mount any E mount lens and their bodies are not what most Sony people would want.

In this case, since Sony can mount over 100 dedicated lenses, they all have to go if you want to shift to Canon. And for what, a handful of Canon lenses that lack what attracted users to Sony in the first place?

Wheels are tire holders, all work much the same. Lenses actually make our art! The camera is a lens holder. The car is not a 'wheel holder' and the wheels don't do much, do they? 'I want them wheels so I'll buy that car' said no one ever.

Finally, though it may be difficult to understand, there is a whole world of photography that does not revolve around 600mm lenses and untold images of birds, thousands upon thousands of them, all much the same. Or fps, or rolling shutters. Most birds and animals just want to be left in peace. A little like us, in fact.

I appreciate the metaphors and if I recall correctly, the OP was referencing sports. I was called out because of my emphasis on BIF/Wildlife and wanted to provide background and perspective. Quite frankly, if I had 10-20 Sony lenses, I never would have migrated back to Canon. In fact, I was in the opposite situation with nearly that many Canon lenses and was migrating to Sony a little over a year ago. Mid-stream, the R5 appeared and it made sense for me to look at it for the type of photography that I pursue. For others in different circumstances or who shoot different genres, choosing the R5 wouldn't be the better choice.

I've noticed this as well. You also have several posters on the Canon forum that will make Sony bashing threads on the Canon side. Frankly, it's weird and childish, and I think a lot of the Sony posters have just had enough of it.

The majority of us on the Sony side have approached the Canon releases with what I would call a critical eye...many Sony shooters are better equipped to judge the Canon cameras from a technical level because they have been using Sonys of the same caliber for years. It's easy for the Canon guys (especially those coming from the 5D3/7D2 type bodies) to be easily impressed by the R5...but the R4 and A9 users not as much.

I'm glad Canon and Nikon have caught up to Sony, it makes an exciting time in photography even better because the 3 giants are swinging away at each other, and that makes the consumer the winner in the end. You simply can't buy a bad camera in 2020, and any deficiencies with final images are 100% down to the photographer's ability. Many photographers are struggling to come to terms with this, it feels like.

Much of what is packed into the Canon R5 is what attracted many people to leave their previous systems for Sony FF mirrorless. Seems only natural to me, the very same would now want to know a lot more about the Canon R5 strengths and weaknesses. As far as new Canon RF lenses go, the same applies. Canon is cranking out some very enticing glass very quickly. More room and need to grow their lens system --but Canon seems to be cranking out these new lenses at an unheard of pace.

While I mostly favor BIFs when the birds are in seasons (migrations) in my area, the BIF (Bickering Inyour Face) often seen here and in other forums seems to be just the norm whenever there is a new photo gear that creates excitement (from any brand). Been lurking here for so long that I still remember when Sony gears were considered just toys.

I continued playing with it with usable results and I still have the "toy" versions currently. My humble ambition is just to upgrade to the 3 year old A9 next year, will be 4 years old then. I am being thrilled that it is still being compared with the latest releases. Please continue that kind of BIF and maybe the used prices may further go down faster (I kid you not).

I have never understood why people switch back and forth so quickly over one body release. You must realize that in X months time a new Sony body will be along to tempt you back. There is no winning in flipping back and forth so quickly particularly when you consider your lens line up costs. It’s not like your current body is crap.

I spent almost a decade long suffering over my feelings of inadequacy of Canon before my Sony switch. Had I switched earlier the Sony system was not fully up to my needs yet and Nikon may have been a mistake too depending on their future development. ( better sensor and AF being the biggest problem with previous Canon).

Frankly I do not trust Canon yet to keep up the pace after all those years of disappointments.

And Sony is not finished the fight yet for sure.

And even with all the cash in the world, relearning all the idiosyncrasies of a new system takes time and looses pictures

For me it's all about lenses as the A7R3 does the job for what I shoot. And Sony along with all the native 3rd party offerings just leaves what's available for Canon in the dust. I value small light lenses and have zero interest in the trophy lenses Canon is releasing for their mirrorless system.

I would never choose to go with cameras without native third-party support and where the vendor is actively hostile to anyone else's glass being used on their cameras, and actually releases software updates to break such use.

Strangely, I was very excited about the Canon R5 up until I read this thread. Canon really got some of their lenses right on RF and I would love to to use them on the latest R5 (currently sharing the R with my dad). But there are so many well reasoned points here that I think I will just wait it out for either the price drop or the next Sony. The R5 offers a compelling amount of megapixel with the tracking just slightly worse than the A9's. To me, those are the two big points. In the end, it's the lenses for me. Sony has way more native mirrorless, but it doesn't mean they have what I want. personally, I'm waiting for a system with a high quality, fast 28mm and 100mm.

What's wrong with the Sigma 105/1.4?

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1393488-REG/sigma_105mm_f_1_4_dg_hsm.html

And you can crop the Sony G 24/1.4 very slightly to get 28mm.

I had the Sigma 105/1.4, I love everything about it except the size and weight. Something native and similar to the Nikkor E 105/1.4 would be great. And no, I don't consider cropping as a substitute for any focal length. I had the GM 24 as well.

In this regard you have to understand that Sony is very different to Canon/Nikon. For gaming, the first parties will pay for exclusive games on their systems and work hand in hand with the third parties, not fight them. Clearly Sony has taken this same approach with their camera business which I think is great.

People will buy third party lenses regardless so why fight it. They need a body to use those lenses on so they may miss out on a lens sale but gain a body sale.

Half of me wants to do it. Two cards, good enough batteries, yeah I could hike across the Grand Canyon with that.

Just push that button, go grab that zoom trinity, plus an RF-mount Samyang 85 while waiting on a native 24/1.4.

3 lenses for travel to get me from 15 to 500.

And the other half just says "Go grab a Sigma 100-400 and call it done".

"...why Canon-centric threads pop up like mushrooms on a regular basis - on the Sony forum"

Here come several more mushrooms

Canonrumors.com :

"These lenses are likely next in the pipeline:

-Canon RF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM
-External zoom, extremely small size. I’m told it’s about the size of a coke can.
-Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM
This lens will be better optically and in build quality than the EF version."

These lenses are likely being announced in 2021:

The TS-R lenses are “groundbreaking” autofocus tilt-shift lenses for the RF mount.

-Canon TS-R 14mm f/4L
-Canon TS-R 24mm f/3.5L
-Canon RF 10-24mm f/4L USM
-Canon RF 14-35mm f/4L IS USM
-Canon RF 24mm f/1.8 IS STM Macro
-Canon RF 35mm f/1.2L USM
-Canon RF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM
-Canon RF 135mm f/1.4L USM
-Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-7.1 IS USM
-Canon RF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM
-Canon RF 500mm f/4L IS USM
-Canon RF 600mm f/4L IS USM
-Canon RF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM
-Canon RF 1200mm f/8L IS USM.

So there you have it, I have been blown away by what was coming from Canon and this should do the same for you guys."

According to the same source there will also be a 80MP camera, so in order to fully use the fabulous lenses in the post above, you may want to skip the R5:

You’ve basically summarized my exact thought process. I’m switching to the R5 from the a7rIII as well. My Sony created excellent images but goddamn is the R5 more fun and (most importantly) more intuitive and less frustrating to use.
