After the disaster with the firmware upgrade of the Sigma 35mm f1.2, for which no solution has been found to date and with regard to a completely incompetent and unfriendly service department of Sigma, I will think carefully about the next purchase of a Sigma product.
Such things should always kept in mind when assessing the price of product.

I'm not much of a sunstar shooter, and it's been dark and dreary all weekend. With 9 rounded blades, I can't imagine it will be a strong point for the Sigma. The CV's 10 straight is probably much better suited for sunstars.

Yeah both look really good though. I'd never be pixel peeping that much anyway. How are the sunstars on the Sigma?

I think the absense rather than presence of sunstars is a strong point of the Sigma. I don’t like sunstars and think it looks like a cheap filter effect. Besides rounded aperture blades improves bokeh in the close up and macro range.

Believe it or not, I intend to keep both. At least that was my thought going in, we'll see if that changes, but I doubt it.
I admire your passion ... The only reason I have not ordered the Sigma yet is that it would mean I'd have to get rid of my CV65, which fulfills all my macro needs (which are not many) currently and I really don't want to do that .

For this focal length sunstars aren't high in my priority list and I can appreciate smoother macro rendering with rounded bokeh balls. I do love sunstars, but mostly for wider focal lengths where sun will fit the frame a lot more often.

So you think the Bokeh is worse on the CV?
In the macro range, yes. OOF highlights get a polygonal shape, which isn’t very attractive. I don’t especially care for sunstars, but for those who do sunstars are most relevant in landscape images. There are examples to illustrate this in the thread dedicated to this lens.

I like multi purpose lenses which is why I asked about sunstars. Yes I like the "cheap filter" effect as well. Always rather have the ability to create a look than not have that ability. I'm intrigued with the Sigma regardless (mostly because AF is useful in those other areas) as a macro (which I don't do alot of), landscape, Portrait, and even street lens. I had the CV110 (and used it for all 4 of those things) and never noticed any issues in Bokeh but then that's a personal taste thing. I would be interested if you could point to an example of this on the 110 thread because I have seen a heck of alot of nice images there and don't remember a "bokeh" being particularly distracting. I'm sure there is one, I am just having trouble I guess visualizing what your talking about.

Maybe Tim could have a look these days at the Sigma's flare / veil with the sun just outside the frame. The CV 110 can certainly look very "vintage" in such situations.
Just the nature of a straight-bladed aperture. Whether it causes anyone concern is as you note a personal taste thing. I would have preferred rounded blades, like the CV 125mm, but it's not a show stopper for me.

So do I order it now or do I wait for an illusory Sony 100 GM OSS APO STF Macro BIF ASTRO?
Cause I fear that such wait might be veeery long..... and if I don't get my Sigma now, I will be in for another loong wait watching the "Out of Stock" notice at my favourite shops here.....

Thanks to both. Have seen both before. Guess it's a taste thing. I have seen both these reviews and in my experience with the CV as well I don't mind the bokeh. With any lens you will run into (for lack of better wording) busy bokeh depending on distance and subject at some point. But so far I'm not seeing anything noticeably better in that regard from the Sigma. Which I am interested in still basically for the added AF benefit.

So the sun is out, but I’m working at the moment. I’ve never actually done this type of test before. Can somebody give me a primer? Hood on or off? Particular apertures to test? You want a comparison to the CV or just a straight test of the Sigma? The slightly different FLs may pose a challenge to compare.
Sun just outside the corner of the frame right?

Portrait distance, no hood, any aperture between 2.8 to 5.6, sun outside the frame. Something similar to the horse pic here:
No comparison or pics (beyond maybe one example) needed, just your assessment that the subject still has suficent contrast and color instead of being obliterated by a colorful veil. Does it look more like a vintage Carl Zeiss Jena, or more like a modern lens like the new Sigma 85mm? Big thanks!

Ha! I knew it! Just ordered one from Vistek and it proved to be their last one, the web site now displays availability as being "On Order". The other big chain here didn't have any stock today.
