Like you, if I had the FE 90, I wouldn't be swapping. This price point was more palatable for covering cases where I want AF. And it looks like a pretty darn good lens.

I will probably stick with the Sony for AF, but only because I like being able to set magnification manually, and because selling and buying is a hassle. The Sigma seems to have fixed the only visible issue with the 90 (mild LoCA) and offer even higher res and contrast along with great macro bokeh (a respect in which the CV, which I’ve also got, is good rather than great).

Relatedly, how great was the presentations by Yamaki? Who else tells you about their sales figures (selectively of course) and the downsides of both their older

After the "large aperture new GM lenses" rumours, I'm rooting here for a GM 100mm, close focus at least, macro even better I it ain't happening, the Sigma will do fine for me

To me 150mm can't be used where 90mm is useful, like product, food shots. 150mm is more useful for bugs etc.

Yea handheld bugs! I use my, adapted, Nikkor 200mm F4.0. My 55 &v105 Nikkor macros languish.

This remark is interesting to me. What makes 150mm unsuitable for product photography?

It's not unusable but it does create a DOF issue so may have to focus stack more often and also maybe a space problem on a set

Thanks. I don't know much about all this (and sorry for all the under-informed waffle in my first post near the start of the thread).

I had assumed focus stacking was semi-necessary regardless to produce something that looks professional and shows enough of the product without soft areas. A few years ago I briefly dabbled with an adapted old manual-focus 50mm macro lens someone lent me. Even with that little thing, the tight depth of field was such a problem that I was pushing hard against some pretty tiny, yucky, severe-diffraction-inducing apertures. I was left with the impresson that "to do it properly" you're usually going to have to focus-stack somehow, and that what follows is a matter of finding a reliable, efficient, high-quality-result way of doing so.

In asking the question above I wondered whether the problem with a long macro, maybe, was a perspective / framing / compression issue in some way, to do with being too-telephoto and making things look too flat somehow. Dunno. Thanks

5 axis stabilization is associated with only a few lenses (others than the new Sigma)- the Sony FE 90mm, CV 110/2.5 and perhaps the Canon 100 with an adapter. All the rest, only 3 axis stabilization.

Edit: the Tokina FE 100/2.8

The EF Tamron and Tokina 90's report focus distance, as does the Nikon 105/2.8 (both AFD and AFS), and the EF-mount Sigma 105/2.8, and, as you noted, both Canon 100's. I think the Tamron 90/2.8 (F004) will report focus distance for A-mount as well.

If you're using the Irix 150, nothing. I use it all the time to shoot lenses for sale. It focus breathes quite a bit, so it's about a 125mm at those distances, and around 110mm at 1:1.

My AF-D Micro 60/2.8, on the other hand, focus breathes in the opposite direction, so it gets longer the closer you focus.

Nothing except too long for some of the shots. It is like what makes 85mm good for portraits. There is a reason there is 90-100mm macros, then 150-180mm macros.

I've posted Yamaki's presentation on the original post. I've been following his presentations as well. It's interesting to hear Sigma's CEO laying out their priorities when designing a new lens.

Here it is again:

So it turns out macros are in high demand right now. Well at least he answers the question of why a macro lens. As much as it might be a surprise, Sigma is just producing what the market wants.

Lot of people stay home and shooting things which they never did before. My case doing food photography as I can't shoot models in the studio. So need a macro. A TS-E with macro probably better for me.

Surprisingly, this is the only DG DN Sigma lens on B&H EDU discount. Wonder why this lens is discounted before release while other older lenses still don't qualify.

If the Dustin Abbot comparison reflects how it compares to the FE 90mm, then it should affect pricing for the 90mm a LOT imo. Of course, we need to wait and see since I don't know how good the copy of the 90mm that Dustin used, is.

My Sony FE 90 tested to be about "equal" for overall IQ compared to the Voigtlander 105 APO macro I had; and posted some of those results on the CV 105 APO thread. The main advantage of the Voigtlander was obviously the APO'ness, but even the 90 isn't too bad in that regard I love the colors, contrast, and bokeh I get from the FE 90 AF/MF clutch works great in the field. It is also 110g lighter than the new Sigma. I'm a big fan of the 14-24 and 24-70 Sigma Arts's, but this one doesn't do it for me. I don't see anything about the Sigma that would make me want it over the Sony 90.

It looks like it will beat the FE 90/2.8 in axial CA control. That may not be enough for current Sony owners to make the switch but it's something to consider. The Sony is sharp and contrasty at center but how the corners compared to the new Sigma? I do not know but it's worth investigating, especially for those in the market for a macro lens.

Interesting that this lens works with Sigma's teleconverters on L-mount for 147mm and 210mm conversions (not to mention the relative higher magnification). I wonder if the Sony teleconverters would work with the e-mount version.

It's a shame but likely not, just like the Sigma 100-400 DG DN E-mount is not compatible with teleconverters.

The Sigma may give you a little lift in absolute resolution and color correction, but I'd take this into consideration when comparing the two. The G is 100+ grams lighter, has OSS, has what I think is one of the best MF designs for FBW lenses, and gives you, thanks to the similarity in MFD and difference in physical length, about three and a half more centimeters working distance at 1:1. It may not sound like much, but every centimeter counts when you're trying to light something tiny.

Or maybe I'm just jaded about new lenses. Every time I see one announced these days, my first thought is, "And how many of them are you going to produce that perform to that specification?" The more complex the lens, the less confident I am that percentage will be high.
