I agree with Tim - the MF implementation on the Sigma is a little strange and, of course, not as good as the CV 110. Still, you can focus accurately with MF.
Look at how much more resolution the Sigma 105 DG DN Macro Art shows at f/2.8 compared to my excellent Sigma 85/1.4 DG DN Art, also at f/2.8. The Sigma 105 is the sharpest, highest resolving lens that I've ever tested.
Is the distorsion compensation disabled on the 85mm? Because the circles in the 105mm looks pretty equal in terms of shape, which is obviously not the case for the 85mm...

Forgive me for not reading all 25 pages of this thread. I read p.1 and then p.20-25.
I'm mainly concerned with learning how the AF compares between the Sigma 105 and the Sony 90. Both for macro shooting and for "normal" shooting.
Reviews that I looked at generally seemed to feel like the Sigma AF performance was a little more prone to hunt than the Sony. But then said they were testing with pre-release firmware. I haven't really found a solid review where they are comparing the latest released firmware.
I'm particularly interested in how the AF works when used on the a7rIV, if anybody has any insight into that.
I have the Sony 24-70GM and the 200-600G. I'm considering getting one of these lenses to serve multiple purposes. I can use it for macro shooting in my underwater setup (as well as possibly trying some terrestrial macro). And I could use it as lens for when I need an intermediate focal length between 70 and 200. I could shoot it at 105 and in crop mode to get 157. It would possibly save me from feeling a need to buy a 70-200. At least until Sigma releases a 70-200 ART...
My concern is for underwater macro, I would really want the AF to work well for macro shooting...

I'm on firmware Version 01.
I have found that the AF hunts a lot even with the focus limiter. I'm hoping a firmware update will improve it, but it's not a deal breaker for me. It will still eventually find focus if you try to allow the focus area to find a contrasty edge. I don't have the 90 macro any more and it's been so long since I used it, but that lens hunts a lot, too, from what I remember. I just can't give you a comparison.
For underwater photography, yeah, it could see it as a deal breaker given that you have a limited oxygen supply and you can't be waiting all day for the damn thing to focus.

A couple of images with the Sigma 105 and A7riv. Handheld using the A7riv's tracking autofocus, which works quite well with handheld macro.

Just in case you wondered about Tina. She'd doing great, and is very well loved. She's very funny when jumping through the deep, fluffy snow, as for moments all you can see from her are the nose and the tail popping out of the snow.

My Sigma 105mm DG DN macro lens has just started refucing to autofocus. I think it's broken but can anyone think of anything I might be do wrong? I take off a working lens and put the Simga on. AF range switch is Full. AF/MF switch is AF. No movement from the focus motors at all. Also, the manual focus ring does not work or have any effect, even with the lens set to MF.
I've cleaned the contact pins, so unless there is anything else, it's on its way back to Amazon.

That’s too bad. Good thing you are within the return window.

It happened to me with their 35 1.2 as well. It just stopped autofocusing after a few hundreds actuation. Poof. I came back to my trustworthy 35 1.4 ZA after that.
