I think it's a huge miss that touchpad AF isn't a thing here from what I can tell (as it is on the Panasonics I mentioned earlier).

You can set up the rear screen to either touch focus or touch track AF when using both the rear LCD and when using the EVF. I find absolute position rather than relative position of touch focus to be more accurate when using the EVF

A view from far left field here - I have been a m43 shooter for 8 years now, currently with the smaller EM5 mkii. This body and its associated small prime lenses has been my travel and hiking mainstay. And I find it quite amazing, that Sony has come up with a FF body, with IBIS and an EVF, that is just 20g heavier than my little EM5 with its hugely smaller sensor. (And actually lighter than the top of line EM1). Yes FF lenses will be larger of course, but with some care in selecting smaller primes in the very large E mount ecosystem, (and avoiding heavy zooms) I could have FF image quality, on an interchangeable lens body, for only a very small weight penalty over what I use now.

With the sale of Olympus and the related uncertainty around its future, and even the m43 standard at worst, Sony has with this body a rational upgrade path for m43 devotees, who up until now were secure in their views that no other system could duplicate the size and weight vs IQ of m43.

Lastly I hear disappointment that the A7C lacks the new menu system, to which I say: it still could not be worse than the Olympus menu chaos...

Thanks for the detailed breakdown.

I’m considering something similar in selling my X100T, which has been my compact option, and getting an A7c to pair with my Sony glass.

Regarding the EVF, how would you compare it to the X100 series cameras you’ve had? Do you still have the V to do a side by side comparison?

Just got mine yesterday, with the kit lens and the Sony 35/1.8.

I've always liked the rangefinder form factor - spent a lot of time with the Panasonic GX7/GX8/GX85 and Fuji X-E3/X100F/X100V over the past few years. I specifically picked up the A7C to replace my X100V. Probably sounds like an odd transition to some, but it makes sense for me given that I'm already a Sony user. The X100V is amazing, but it is too big for a pocket camera for me. It was small enough though to serve as a "real" camera that I could fit in a

Awesome....really appreciate the tip. I had looked in the menu under the AF options but missed it in setup options. Thanks!

I do not, unfortunately. I would say the X100V EVF is superior. It’s hard for me to meaningfully compare them except to say that for me, the X100V isn’t something that would provoke conscious thought about the EVF, it would just work; whereas the A7C would be noticed as a “it’d be nice if this was bigger” reaction.

Have to disagree with you. Sony's IBIS is a joke compared to Oly and they lack many of the advanced features found on the EM-1's. The quick menu screen covers 99% of the settings one would normally use. The Oly pro glass is as good as it gets.

That said, I enjoy both the Oly and the Sony systems. But calling this rational upgrade path for m43 is quite subjective. I like the 7c, but after someone pointed out it's essentially the same size as the other FF without the prisim box, it didn't make sense. if it had the higher MP sensor, well maybe!

That makes sense. Thanks for the comment - gives me something to think about. I’ll try to get my hands on an A7c before taking the plunge.

had it in hand in a local store, looked through the viewfinder once, then twice and my decision was made to not buy one. same goes for the ergos.

its a cool little camera, but not for me for that price. here in switzerland the A7III is around 450ish bucks less than a new a7c.

I'm not buying it. I do think it's a great little camera, but the rear LCD design and function is a deal breaker for me.
I'm not a content creator and doubt I will become one. I do like vid clips of shoots, but usually have someone else do it or just use my phone. The way the LCD opens to the side doesn't work for me as a stills shooter. I use the A7 cams for discreet street, candid portraits (not lately!) and hiking in the forest. I use the LCD mostly these days on the A7II, so the A7C EVF doesn't bother me. If the A7C screen was similar to the A7III I would be tempted.

I’ll never understand why we can’t get the alpha a mount series tilt down and swivel out combo screen implementation in an e mount body.

I'll see your disagree and raise you one

Sony's IBIS is only a joke when talking about video, IMO. But for stills, it does a good job. Just because I can't hand hold the occasional 5 second exposure with my A7R4 like I can with my EM1iii, doesn't mean it's not capable or a joke. I think it's pretty dang good. Especially considering it's stabilizing a sensor that's twice the size and all.

True, it's not a joke, that's me being dramatic; but it's hardly near state-of-art. We'll just have to disagree, I don't find it dang good. Maybe it's the lens choice that makes the difference in our experiences.

On a lens mount that's comparatively narrow (for the sensor size), on cameras that are comparatively small.

Something's got to give.

I’m debating on this as well, but am leaning towards a used A7iii instead. Coming from an A6000, some would argue I won’t miss the front dial, extra custom buttons, and joystick and that I would benefit from the “better autofocus” of the A7C, but having held both in my hands, I much prefer the grip and ergonomics of the A7iii. I’m probably 90% photography and 10% video (if that) and I think that the A7iii would be an excellent first FF for me. Thoughts?

But the image quality reigns supreme, no compromise there.

No. I'm always a believer in the signals makers send to the market as to what is a product's major intended usage. This one is a luxo vlogger LCD-centric camera for Instagram/teen media app content producers, cunningly decked out with Leica-esque externals and clean (silver!) top panel to attract some trad guys. You have only to check the video reviews, and observe how they use the camera.

The heart of any MF lens-friendly camera is it viewfinder and here we have a backward step to an APS-C item. The emphasis on AF tracking, mic/controls interfaces, the addition of the fold
