I recently ordered a Refurbished Canon 5DSR directly from Canon USA's website and because I'm getting ready to take off to Utah to catch the leaves change (never been there for this before), I even paid for rush shipping, which I've never done that before either.
I received the camera today, but was quite surprised to find that the AF doesn't work worth nearly at all! At first, I thought it might be the lens I was using, even though I was using a very sharp lens (EF 24-105mm F/4L vs.II), but when I tried another L lens, my sharpest lens (EF 70-200mm F/4L), it was no better. I could really tell the difference when I did a quick comparison with my old 5DSR. Now I know why perhaps this camera was sent back to Canon!
While I usually buy refurbished cameras and lenses from Canon refurbished, my old 5DSR was new and I never had a problem before, but now time is of the essence. I'm going to call Canon tomorrow and see what we can do and maybe there is some setting off, but it's very frustrating! I'm even wondering if I should get a new one since I believe the 5DSR is on its way out of production.
OR anyone have real experience with the new Canon EOS 5R Mirrorless? It's the new 45mp full frame. I guess it's replacing the 5DSR. It's $200 more than a new 5DSR.

I ordered a reburb EOS R in the past couple months. Had the LCD not worked, I would likely not start a thread here, seeing defects with new cameras happen too Like a detached mode dial on an R6 someone started a thread about this week.
But aside from that ..
I'd take refurb any day for a model that's been out a while. Although, for the 5DS R, I would gone for the grey market brand new off Ebay for about $1500.00
At the moment, if money wasn't a pinch, I''d gladly fork out the dough for an R5 above a promo code deal on a 5DSR.
But if time was a crunch, the adapter could make or break the R5 if the adapter isn't ready to roll and if EF lenses are most of the lenses.
Your post reminds me why I'm ordering a 2nd EF > RF adapter, too.

I love Canon's refurbs. I have 5 or 6 purchases and they are all EXCELLENT. Have you have a chance to to check if the camera still has an old microfocus setting on it?
And yes... the R5 is everything Canon said it was. My 5Ds get absolutely ZERO use now.

A couple of things to think about if you go that route
1. If you plan on using any EF lenses make sure the EF-RF adapter is available.
2. The R5 will go through batteries faster than the 5Dsr/5Ds but you can use the older batteries as extras
3. The resolution difference is negligible between the 5Ds/5DsR and the R5
4. It is easy to switch to R5 from a 5DsR/5Ds though you will find a couple of changes in operating the R5 vs 5DsR/5Ds but nothing unsurmountable, given touch screen and multifunction dial.
5. Since I received my R5 I haven't shot my 5DsR though I do shoot the R5 along side my recently converted Full Spectrum 5Ds. I am pleased with the R5 I am sure I will still use the 5DsR from time to time but the R5 is my goto camera of choice. The RF glass is terrific on the R5.

I'd probably just use the old one.
I've seen links on here to grey market 5DsR's selling for $1100 or something. If that's real I'd probably go that route. I wouldn't want to pay only $200 less for a 5DsR right mow. R5 is a much more expensive camera

I've bought many refurb cameras from Canon. I received one SX60 with a AF point that drifted all around the frame and would not lock on. I knew it wasn't right, but the support people gave me a runaround and played the try 50 things game. Finally, I told them to either send a replacement overnight or I was just returning it for a refund. They sent the replacement overnight and it worked fine.
All the DSLR's and lenses have had no issues. I just received a RF 24-240 today, one of those with the stacked coupons. I popped it on my EOS R briefly and it looked very good, I did not have a chance to really give it a workout. I bought it as a travel lens, but was surprised at how sharp images appeared thru the viewfinder. I'll download the first couple and check them out.

I returned the 5DSR to Canon USA and they're giving me a refund. They're even refunding the $14.99 shipping charges, but only after I argued that if they sent me a camera that worked, I wouldn't be returning it. I was buying it for my Utah trip and shipping it to make sure I got it for my short departure because I've had it take 2 weeks for them to get me my order.
You convinced me that if/when I get another Canon, it will be the R5. I'm still thinking about getting either a medium format Pentax 645 or Fuji's equivalent (though I don't know why Canon has never offered at least one MF camera like many of the other manufacturers have), but I'm holding off a bit to do more research because I don't know if I'm up to either getting a heavier camera (back problems) and the expense of buying all new lenses (used or new). At least with the R5, I can get a lens converter and use my EF lenses on the R5, but it gets trickier w/Fuji and Pentax.

Of course, the auto-focus was not something that Canon could fix over the phone so I decided to just return it and ask for a refund. I bought the camera for my trip to Utah this week and there was no way they could get it to me before I left. I think when the prices come down on the R5 I may get that camera. As long as I can use my EF lenses, I'm good.
I've purchased a lot of refurbished lenses from Canon refurbished as well and both the lenses and cameras are usually just as good as brand new! This was my first negative experience and even at that, Canon dealt with it well. In comparison, I made a bad move and bought a Sigma Merrell from Sigma Refurbished Direct, which came with a lens as well. The camera also didn't have a working AF and there were spots all over the sensor that I couldn't get off and oddly enough, Sigma cameras have an internal filter covering the guts so how it got so dirty inside, I can't figure out. I returned the lens first because I thought it was the lens and the lens also didn't open to F/4.0 so it was defective, but I traded the value of the lens for a new Sigma Art. Then I realized that the lens wasn't the only problem so I returned the camera, but unlike Canon, Sigma refurbished only offers a 3 month warranty and YOU have to pay for shipping even when they send you a defective camera! I protested enough though that they sent me a brand-new camera instead of another refurbished. I would never get another Sigma anything again because they also don't support their SA lens series well and there are NO lens converters so you can't use a non-Sigma lens. I found a guy in Spain that had a conversion kit for Leica-R lenses, which I got two, but it was way too expensive and the shipping took 2 months. Now I lost use of two of my 3 Leica lenses, but the Leica lenses take far superior photos when compared to the Sigma Art.

Really surprised to hear that. That I recall I have purchased camera bodies (SL-1 w/ kit lens, SL-2), lenses (TS-E 45, recently RF 24-105L), and probably a few more items starting on 2013. I never had any issues, always well packaged, worked out of the box.

One party's word - no documentation - and a matter typically best suited for online google reviews or just working things out with customer service.
On the other hand, I have a refurb 5DS (5DSR) , 5D mk iii and EOS R and they are all perfect. But the only problem I recall with an item was a new lens from Tamron, that was more firmware related than quality.
