I think it won't be even close to the vintage Leitz 50/1.5 Summarit lens which I enjoy a lot. But why would I buy this 50/1.5 new Cosina lens and not the faster Cosina 50/1.2 M lens? Just for some vintage effect....? Price is similar....

I was hoping that they would release the 50mm f2 APO in Leica M mount.

I think for an M camera user, the 50/1.2 is slightly on the big/wide side in respect to viewfinder blockage and fitting the general philosophy of the M system. But by all accounts, it's a great lens. The f/1.5 is IMO better sized for M cameras, but I still stand by my earlier comment that I'd rather see f/1.2, 2.0 and 3.5 spacing.

As for the 50/1.5 Summarit, which I also have, the CV 50/1.5 LTM I had was hardly what I would consider vintage optical performance. It was very sharp/modern already from wide open, but it didn't hold that all the way across the frame. For me it was a disappointing compromise. Not truly classical optical characteristics (flaws) while not modern enough (across frame sharpness) for when I would want such optical performance. Consider that its first version was LTM and my thinking is Cosina probably wanted to offer LTM users a relatively modern/sharp new 50mm option.

The Voigtlander 'vintage' tag, at least with the most recent releases starting with the previous 50/1.5 M version, seems to be as much, or perhaps more, about design aesthetics than optical performance. The Voigtlander 'classic' lenses, such as the 35/1.4 and 40/1.4, are probably truer to vintage optical performance.

I just came across this Gallery page from Voigtlander. It shows samples images from their current lenses:

This is surprising. I was expecting them to consolidate their 35's and 50's to a fast F1.2 option, small F2 option and maybe one more unique option F2.5/3.5.

Their 50mm F2 APO would make a great M lens.

I like the size/weight of their new 35mm 1.2, but the rendering looks a bit rough at times. Perhaps that's the price to pay for smallness and sharpness. One reason I've stuck with their 35mm 1.7 VM for now.

With one exception all of my M mount lenses do not intrude into their respective framelines. The 50/1.2 isn't that exception.

Such corrections on color film would be great.

Have you ever thought about making a comparison of these fiftys, mostly for their rendering? It might interest many people, and me for sure

I don't really enjoy doing side by side comparison shooting, lots of work and very tedious. I only have limited time to shoot on weekends too these days. I tend to shoot these lenses one at a time and then I get an understanding of their unique characteristics over time I can share samples shot individually but I have no formal comparison shots. I also don't have a camera that these M-mount lenses are really designed for so my results will not be fully representative of how they work on true M-mount cameras. I adapt them to my Sony A9 / Sigma fp and soon to my pre-ordered A7c.

Yeah, my former old version of 35/2.5 wasn't really good on Sony FF so it impacted my interest in going for the new version which should be optically same. I have no plans to buy M rangefinder cameras so need to stick to what works on my cameras with their thicker sensor covers unless I someday get a Kolari UT sensor modification on some camera. Also this lens is still in production so it's easy to buy anytime, which means I have no special incentive to buy it right now I do think it's a lens I would really like on a suitable camera though.

I just pre-ordered the A7c as it became available for pre-orders today in Japan, so I'm looking forward to using all my M-mount CV glass as well as native E-mount CV glass on it (especially the smaller ones, e.g. 15/4.5, 21/3.5, 35/1.4 and also the 35/1.2 SE, 40/1.2, 50/1.2 and 50/2).

Cosina is now putting the new 50/1.5 II lens on their site, I saw it on main page but link doesn't work yet...
Release date is October. Currently the link from the new entry goes to 50/1.2 SE page...

Here it is:
http://www.cosina.co.jp/seihin/voigtlander/vm-mount/VM-50mm1_5-2/index.html

Looks like a whole new style (focusing ring is entirely different and it looks smaller than the original version).
198g vs. 220g for the old version (black, that was lighter).

Old version's page for comparison reference: http://www.cosina.co.jp/seihin/voigtlander/vm-mount/vm-50mm1_5/index.html

three style versions! We need a bit more consistency with these 'vintage' lenses!

Is the double grip focusing ring reminiscent of the new SE lenses?

The silver version looks quite similar to some Zeiss ZM lenses at a glance. I would probably go for the all-black if I bought it, the nickel black paint version is heavier at 255g and it will be more expensive.

I'm happy that they didn't keep the old style focusing ring in any case.

Yeah, the double grip focusing ring might have some design style common with SE lenses but not sure if they feel the same at all...

Compared to the 50/1.2 Nokton it's way shorter at 37mm (vs 49mm) and about 145g lighter.

Actually the design seems to resemble the 35/2. It's gone back to being short and squat, like the LTM design.

Optics have also changed, now it's a 7/8 groups/elements design vs. 5/6.

Yes, looks a bit like the 50/1.5 ZM. (the all black version)

Apparently only 43mm filter size and takes the LH-6 hood, which is shared with the 35/1.4 and 40/1.4 Classic lenses (and ZM35/2.8 and 50/2, IIRC).

BTW, I noticed Cosina has put together a PDF catalog: http://www.cosina.co.jp/seihin/voigtlander/v-catalog.pdf

Even a few MTF curves in there for a few of the FE mount APO lenses.
