Does anyone know if that A1 supports this adapter with screw driven lenses?
Yes. Both are listed on Sony's compatibility website. The one notable thing is the A1 dropped AF support for the LA-EA4 & 2. I guess they got to remove the focus adjustment settings for those from the A1 menus.

Thanks to those who responded, although your setups are different than mine.
Just as a follow-up in case anyone is wondering, the LA-EA5 does work with the Sony 70-400 G (original version) on the A9 and tracks pretty well. No issues. It doesn't do 20 fps, but for me that works fine. I decided ultimately to stick with the 70-400 because it's brighter (f4-5.6) than the Sigma 100-400 (f5-6.3) and a bit wider at 70mm. It also saved me the hassle of selling.
So far I haven't tested the Sony 100-400 and from what everyone says, perhaps I won't, otherwise I'll have to buy it next.
Also in case anyone is wondering, I can confirm that the LA-EA5 does NOT work with the Minolta 80-200 f2.8 HS APO on the A9. Only manual focus. But I knew that already. Hopefully, Sony will figure out a way to update the adapter and/or A9 in the future. But I'm not holding my breath.

I am actually looking into a 70-400, myself. I bet your Minolta 80-200 doesn't work as it only supports SSM/SAM lenses on the A1, but will with a firmware update. Hopefully. Because that is weird. I just picked up an a7rIV and am loving my Minolta 100/2.

This decision by Sony to support screw-driven lenses only on the A6600 and A7RIV is completely incomprehensible to me, even more so if they don't work even on the latest and greatest $6500 A1.
Let's see if it will be fixed through a firmware update, for the A1 maybe, for the A9/II and A7 3rd gen bodies I'm honestly not holding my breath..

Marc Aldhadeff posted a video of the Sony A-mount 300/2.8 on the A1 with the adapter.
Eye-AF works in photo mode, but in video mode the lens is MF only.

The most recent Sony cameras no longer support the contrast-detect AF-S with shutter that used to be available with the LA-EA1/3/5 while in video mode. This is a camera limitation. My NEX 5T has AF-S with shutter while recording video with the LA-EA5.

I tried with Sony 500mm f/4 and it hunt like crazy for BIF.
Hi Alex,
I just purchased the a7Riv and LA-EA5 adaptor and tested it indoors in my basement and had similar hunting issues, I will try it outdoors tomorrow.
I still have an a99ii hanging around. Do you recommend keeping the a99ii for the 500 or sell both and get an E lens instead?
I also checked out my Tamron 150-600 G2 and it hunts too, though it works much better on the a99ii.

The 500/8 is just not designed to focus quickly. It is too bad. it is so much nicer to carry than the 200-600 G OSS. It is also challenging to get a nice looking image with Reflex. [totally missed this was about the 500/4G SSM not the Reflex]
Low-light focusing often works better with an SLT. The 15-point sensor used in the LA-EA4 is also better in those conditions than the 79-point sensor used in the A99II.
None of the Tamron A-mount lenses support the performance update that Sony made when the original A77 was released. Sony described that update as offering 4x better tracking performance. The A99II should perform best with the updated Sony SSM II lenses [which includes the 500/4G SSM].

I owned the Canon, I think it’s renders a bit flat and I didn’t find too much special about it—though it’s very competent. Most 100/2’s test well, even 30-year-old designs.
The Mino (and even ZA 135 and 85) are beloved for the renderings. The 100/2 I find to be unusually rich and attractive.
I've been comparing the Minolta and Canon 100mm F2's back-to-back for a week now. I am not seeing much of anything between them. The Canon is sharper and a bit more prone to purple fringing. Colors and out-of-focus are very similar.

I am referring to the big-boy 500 f4 as hunting. I am also seeing that the accuracy is not consistent between test shots, some being a bit mushy.
Thanks for all the info concerning the lenses.
I also just checked my SAL300 G2 and it appears to focus in much quicker than the 500. Maybe not as quick as on the a99ii, but quick nonetheless. I also checked out my SAL70-400 and it performs better than the 500 as well. These 2 lenses also seem to focus more accurately.
My son uses the SAL70-400 G2 so that should work very well on the A7/LA combo based on my G1.
The MFA on my zooms tend to be different at the ends so this mirrorless combo will save me a lot of calibration time.

Sorry, I totally missed it was about the F4 G SSM. I believe that is almost a hand-built lens. I wonder if it just needs service. Alignment issues can affect AF performance. I'd expect it to work at least as well as the 70-400 SSM II.

I'll have to test again but on first use I had no issues with the Sony 70-400mm G II on the a7iv/LA-EA5. The lenses that seem to have the most trouble are Sigma HSM lenses. Old screw drive Sigma lens work great.

QuietOC and mombo76, thanks for your input. Since you both had good results I decided to retest my lenses, outdoors today since the rain has stopped.
The original conclusions I reached were indoors and in the basement and compared to my a99ii. The lenses worked much better on the a99ii for the basement tests (beyond the MFD but not a whole lot further).
My outdoor results, using distances further away from the MFD for my my short distance to longer distance acquisition test, showed much better results. Outdoors the performance was good enough for me to not notice an impactful difference between the a7Riv and a99ii.
A pleasant surprise was that the AF performance of the Tamron was also similar to its a99ii performance. Additionally, it seems that the focus area is expanded with the newer camera. The wide focus area on the a99ii was set to a lot smaller area than when using a Sony lens. It looks like more of the sensor is used, though I have not plowed through to see how many focus points are used.
In a nutshell, though the a7Riv/LA-EA5 combo does not perform as well AF-wise with my long lenses as the a99ii on the short end of the focal length, anything beyond the close-in region performs well.
