p.2 #1 · Introducing LA-EA5 | Mount Adaptor | Sony | Accessory

I'm slightly confused about what is improved over the LA-EA3. I had the impression already that the usefulness of the "3" had gone up a lot in recent years, with faster cameras like the a9 and more generous feature-support through camera firmware updates. I had the impression you could get pretty fast autofocus and pretty decent bursts out of the "3" on bodies like the a9 nowadays.

The 3 didn't support screw-drive AF lenses, I think. What else?

It's academic for me, I don't have any A-mount lenses. Just idly curious. Probably just haven't paid enough attention.

It's good of Sony to offer better legacy support, so many years after the A-mount was mainstream. A way for good old lenses to continue to be useful with the latest, high-capability bodies.

All have gorgeous renderings, while I always like the Minolta 80-200 2.8 as well. If this were compatible with my a7r2, I’d pre-order. The a850 was my first FF camera, still love the glass.

I would guess this means no more a-Mount cameras.

OMG. Going back to Sony and my Minolta 100/2. Wow wow wow.

Great move! This doesn't make much financial sense for Sony (especially consider moderately asking price, I would think) but do show Sony care about customers.

I wish Nikon can do the same. A shame it hasn't been done initially and till now

Based on the video, ALL legacy lenses will work, screw drive or otherwise. Let me know if someone understands it differently.

Hopefully someone around here with some old Minolta glass sitting around will pick one of these up to see how it works! I had an A99ii for a bit for action stuff but have long since sold it along with the glass I used on it.

Its such a brilliant lens. Vastly underrated. It isn't quite the CY100/2, but a very special rendering.

From my reading the LA-EA5 doesn't offer the A7III anything beyond what the LA-EA3 already provides. Maybe that will change in the future.

I think the major difference is LA-EA5 is available for all lenses. LA-EA3 available for SAM/SSM lenses only.

Note: Per mogul's comment below "That is an old chart...la3 will use pdaf on sensor."

I know nothing about adapting lenses. Will the LA-EA5 work with old Minolta AF lenses on the RIV?

Really wishing I'd held on to the Minolta HS 200/2.8 and 400/4.5.

I'd want this for screw drive lenses. LA-EA3 doesn't af with them.

If Nikon doesn't follow through with their own screw drive Z adapter, I'm hoping the 3rd party backwards engineer's the LA-EA5 and makes a Nikon AF/AFD to E-mount AF adapter. Nikon has way more screw drive lenses that are still amazing on modern bodies.

The LA-EA5 doesn't offer AF for screw-driven lenses on the A7III. The notes say that is only available for the A6600 and A7RIV.

@FredMiranda

The good:
- terrific sharpness, even WO, onto the outter frame at 42mp
- gorgeous colors and contrast
- built wonderfully
- small for a 100/2
- decent 3-D
- price (nowadays)
- overall rendering (!!)

The so-so:
- Typical MFD (wish it were higher magnification)
- bokeh—generally smooth cause it’s a 100mm f2, but not as buttery like Oly 100/2 or CY 100/2

The bad:
- more CA than modern glass, but clean up quickly
- MF is hard as the focus ring is small, short throw
- flare resistance

It’s really a great lens, hence the status. Files just have something a bit special. And it’s pretty versatile.
