SAR reported a while back that a Sony rep had said they were looking to discontinue the A7II, as its old chassis and components were no longer profitable for them - at the seemingly always heavily discounted prices. What this might mean for the A7rII remains unclear, but if I were Sony, I'd be putting that 42Mpix sensor in the next A7rc!
So, I suspect Sony's strategy is to discontinue the A7II soon after the A7c announcement, and then move the A7III down in price to compete with the likes of the Nikon Z5 (as the A7III will be the inferior camera in terms of the old processor and menu's etc compared to the A7c).
Then Sony will announce the A7IV in the A7rIV/A7sIII body with the new processor, touchscreen menu's etc, but take it a bit more upmarket in terms of frame rate, 4K60p video etc - to compete with the likes of the Canon R6, with a price point closer to $2,500 also.
Then Sony will announce the A7rV to match the Canon R5 - you get the picture......Show more →
Sony needs an A5 to go head to head with the Z5 and the RP. The A7II is old enough that it's likely getting more expensive to produce and the price is so low that there can't be much margin in it.
With the A7c seemingly coming in around the $2k mark, it's not the answer here. I see two options for Sony.
1. Introduce an A5 as well, as a direct competitor to the Z5 & RP.
2. Release the A7IV and drive the A7III price down to $1599 or less to compete directly (more camera, so more expensive than the Z5 & RP, but because Sony's kit 28-70 is so cheap, the kit price is directly against the Z5 and RP kits because they charge more for their included lenses, although Nikon's is admittedly better, Canon's 24-105 STM certainly isn't)
I honestly suspect Sony had two compact designs, an A7c and an A5, and shopped them around to their beta testers to see which went over better. Clearly they figured out that the market for compact street shooter was more refined than discount.

The form factor is "hype" enough for many. You may be surprised how many people have been looking for a FF camera in a smaller body. Even if it is not a lot smaller I personally enjoy the A6600 form factor more. It's not designed for pro use, hence no second slot needed. Never had 2 rolls of film in any of my camera's I'm not really sure how you can say the corner EVF is "niche" when there never has been one offered before with a FF sensor (except Rx1rII). So again. Not everyone is looking for big spec bumps every time they buy a new camera. Especially since this camera is going to appeal to the hikers, street, family, back-up, travelers... group of hobbyist and enthusiasts. Sony may market it as a "vlogger" camera but that is just a niche group they are pandering too in my opinion. The people that will actually buy this camera will be ones I listed above. They will determine it's success. Not "vloggers". ...Show more →
Yes some people lack the perspective to understand that their wants/needs don't represent all photographers.
I have my 85GM, Sigma 35 1.2, 12-24...big lenses for paid work...but don't particularly enjoy using them outside of that.
Whenever I'm shooting for myself, shooting experience matters a lot. I basically prefer gear that I can easily carry and integrate into my everyday goings. Best camera is the one you have on you right? And I'm not going to carry the Sigma 35 1.2 when heading out. This is why I own lenses like the CV40, SY75 1.8, Loxia 21, FE35.
My beef with Sony FF is that they've given up on the early premise that FF mirrorless can be compact as the bodies got larger and larger to accomodate massive lenses. Those original a7 bodies had a lot of shortcomings, but they were fun to shoot on for sure. I also hope Sony fulfills the early vision of high quality. Basically more FE55 1.8 type lenses that are smaller in max aperture, but optically perform at a high level.

I actually prefer a RF format over a DSLR format which has a central evf. Such camera is easier to use and the form doesn't cry loud as being a pro grade expensive camera. I would pick up a silver camera in RF format any day over a big chunky DSLR shape camera (if the internals were just as good). I also find a side evf is easier to look through than a central one because with a central one, I have to rub my nose against the back of the camera in order to look through it.
That said, I see no point of arguing about a product none of us has seen when all we know so far is based on rumors posted in a rumor site. It may turn out not being what the rumors are saying. SAR's information are not always correct. I remember when SAR hyped up about the new A9 ii incorporating a 36mp sensor. It created an expectation about the unreleased model. Some people got very disappointed when it turned out to carry the same 24mp sensor (albeit being tweaked). Nobody has even see a picture of this new model and its specifications and pricing are yet to be officially confirmed.

I would like a minimum 36mp, don't need ibis or video, at a 200g weight savings. Then I realize this is the incredibly priced original A7R. Then I also realize I happily traded the 200g savings for 61mp. So I guess that means I don't know what I want from this camera at $2k.

I want the original a7 body back honestly. I'm not a pro. I just want full frame image quality and a small package. This is why RX1Rii is my favorite camera to date.

I hope so. Sony needs to release a new portrait-specialized lens and successor of the 85 GM. But, that could also just be the kit lens.
Of course it’s the kit lens! We know there is one because it’s being offered in a kit (and a tiny compact zoom makes commercial sense). And there’s only one lens registered. So we are going to have to wait for any other glass we might hope for.

What if we are on the wrong track? To me, a new slimmer body/smaller lens isn't a "new concept", just the same thing in a new skin.
Personally, I would be more interested if "new concept" is a modular system, both hardware and software. A return to Playmemories app but on steriods. Sony has been polishing and pushing their imaging SDK, maybe it's in preparation for this. Users can extend functionality of the camera by installing apps (let's be realistic here, it will be an app store like setup where Sony charges money for apps/features). You want focus stacking? 444/RAW video? Waveform? False colour? Some whiz bang computational stuff? There's an $$$ app for it. Think you can auto WB better than Sony? Here's the api.
Hardware wise, you want it in a security camera? Here's a bolt on. Or plug it into a drone that was built for this. Big grip? Medium grip? etc, etc.
Here's a concept, headphone monitor over Bluetooth and there's a walkman app for music when you have idle time for some R&R.

C=curved sensor.
Colors and shapes are not concepts.
Modular design is another thought
ZX1 is another concept

it's the a6100 but with the raised top, the grip looks similar, just a tad bigger for the FZ100, but the lack of extra custom button on the top is a bummer

No front dial?!?! It's crazy how they can't get their cameras all on the same page. Hopefully the A7cII fixes that. Would be nice to be able to switch from your main body to your backup or b-cam and have similar layouts control-wise.
Lens looks nice though, probably going to be a FE version of the 16-50mm. Hopefully they announce a couple more high quality pancake-ish lenses soon.
