Some night time street shots from Vancouver. Z6. All handheld, some higher iso. Haven't visited downtown in some time - city feels strange with double tap of pandemic + wildfire smoke.

I created a group on flickr for photos taken with this lens (mainly due to ability to post higher resolution + full exif info) - https://www.flickr.com/groups/14753340@N23/

Another experimental shot using the 1.4x TC for a larger image of the flower. The often overlooked advantage of a TC being that you have the same minimum focus distance but with the added magnification of the TC, the magnification being 1.4x in this case.

Z7 + 70-200 f2.8S + Z 1.4x TC, 1/250s f/10.0 at 270.0mm iso360 handheld.

Some more from today. Some crops, some AF testing on Bruce. I sold my 2.8E in February and I sure missed this focal range. F4 I briefly had during holiday months doesn't compare.

have used it on a shoot already, love this thing. im assigned the MNF game for the Raiders, so hoping to put it thru some of its real life paces for sports with the 1.4x . the OOF areas are so buttery. the AF is quick and silent, i prefer the handling of this lens to the FL ED with FTZ, feels far more balanced for obvious reasons, and the VR is incredible.

I had a little fun with 70-200/2.8s + TCx2 for a quick trip.

These are all DX cropped from Z7. Sorry the pictures are not all that good but it should demonstrate how good the AF is on 70-200/2.8s + TCx2. I had easier time getting the AF on the sparrows than iwth FTX + 500PF for sure. I dont have my 500/4e FL anymore to compare but I think 70-200/2.8s + TC also acquires focus faster. While hit rate is not as good as D6+ 600/4G ( a loaner till my 600/4e FL arrived next week), rate limiting step seems to be limited buffer, fps and EVF. High+ EVF is pretty much useless at tracking these sparrows and high mode is a bit better. I hope Nikon will address EVF lag time and refresh rate with Z7s as well and not just improvement in AF capability.

Ouch!!!...I think I cut my retina look at those pictures Lance! Nicely done. Surely impressive and making the wait for mine to show up feel even longer. Thanks for that

Cheers

Couple more for today. AF is definitely more snappy - it seems to me that there's noticeably less hesitation with initial acquisition.

Looks like this is a legendary lens! just happened to see the new article Thom Hogan posted on his site.

His quotes:

As a bonus, here's a teaser about how I view some lenses before I get around to posting their reviews:

As a bonus, here's a teaser about how I view some lenses before I get around to posting their reviews:

20mm f/1.8 S. Quite a good lens. Some will complain about size, though.
24-200mm f/4-6.3. Not as good as some claim, but still clearly the best FX superzoom Nikon's made.
50-250mm f/4.5-6.3 DX. Also not as good as some claim, but still the best DX telephoto zoom Nikon's made.
58mm f/0.95 NOCT. Better than many claim (!), but it's tough to come up with a viable use case.
70-200mm f/2.8 S. Yeah, this lens is going to be out of stock for a long time. Best fast telephoto zoom ever. By anyone.
1.4x and 2.0x TC. If you have the 70-200mm f/2.8 S, you're absolutely going to want one or both of these. This from someone who doesn't tend to like TCs.

Great times ahead!

Thom's comments makes me want to run out and buy one, but perhaps it's just as well I don't shoot enough at 70-200 to justify the $3800+ CAD price w/tax.

Read today that the lens is made in Thailand. Not sure why this bugs me but it always does... bugged me with the “made in China” 105mm 1.4 and now with this lens.

Also weird buying a made in the USA BMW or a made in Mexico Fender guitar. 🤷🏼‍♂️

It is going to become more and more common for Nikon. They moved the robot automated assembly line
to Thailand. Most of the high end glasses elements used are still being manufactured in Japan but more assembly will be done
in Thailand. I think 50/1.2 also is being assembled here.
Now that it is going to robots rather than human for much of the work, location is not going to make much of a difference
in QC, I would think.

For what it's worth, D850, A7r IV and A9 are made in Thailand as well. Quite a number of Sony lenses as well.

So i was assigned Monday night football by ESPN, so i used it as a reason to put my 70-200S with 1.4tc thru its paces.

Since im shooting from the operational zone, i honestly didnt get to use it that much, instead was using my 600 f4 and wishing for more. But when i was lucky enough to get action coming to my corner, the 70-200 S and 1.4x worked flawlessly.

I thought the Z6 couldn't handle sports? I guess YouTubers don't know what the f**k they're talking about.

Great images throughout... not only is the lens sharp w/ a converter, but you dispelled a huge myth about the Z6's inability to focus on active subjects.

Looking at these pics makes me wonder how I can get my hands on the lens!

thanks!

Ive shot NHL hockey for the past two seasons with the z6, and its a much faster game than the NFL, it always held up great, i actually prefer it to the d5 since its lighter and higher res files, only thing i wish it had was a viewfinder like the a9. sometimes if an nhl'er is sprinting fast enough, i can lose him in the frame because of the z6 "stutter" viewfinder, but for the NFL , it wasnt at all a problem.
