Great shots Lance. How do you find the IQ of this setup at the long end compared to a 300pf?

Thank you very much for your kind comment, Gerry!

Unfortunately, I do not have the 300 pf to compare it with. I did borrow a firend's 300pf many years ago when they first came out and was very impressed by it's sharpness and IQ. I would say that the 300pf, being a prime, would be sharper but I wouldn't know by how much un less we could do a back to back comparison. Suffice to say for me, the 70-200 f2.8 + 1.4x TC exhibits excellent sharpness and IQ and am more than hppy with it's results.

Just wanted to share a crop for thread posterity simply to reinforce the fact this lens is so freaking good optically...

The image is nothing special, just a handheld grab shot from a walk a few days ago. But when I reviewed them and saw how well it captured the frog hairs inside this flower I felt compelled to share it -- a 2048x1024 actual pixel crop from the Z7ii, I locked AF on this flower then recomposed to where it was about ⅔ out from center frame; it's hand-held with IS on, lens at 200mm and f4:

(Note that this site is not retina-aware, so it does not compress the image size for the display and why it renders closer to a 200% view)

The 70-200S is quickly becoming my favorite flower lens. These all with the 1.4x converter -- and honestly I cannot detect any IQ loss from the 1.4x compared to bare lens at all. (By contrast, I do detect a slight IQ loss with the 2x as well as a slight reduction in bokeh smoothness -- both minimal, but notable.) Detail with this combo remains stunning, AF remains fast and accurate and of course VR works so well a tripod is not needed. This 1 stop down at f5.6 and 280mm:

I tested this lens out a few weeks back, decided there were some significant advantages over my VRii (a true 200mm, sharper, better contrast), but the price and also having a D500 held me back. Just before I returned it, I took a quick shot of some flowers and started to understand the greatest benefit to me.....the reduced minimum focus distance. Well I brewed on it for a while longer and then quickly snapped up a used copy for a significant cost reduction. Aside from the standard test shooting to assess the lens, I took a few quick snaps of this fly. I've never been so happy with a fly on my BBQ before.....the photos are nothing fantastic to put up on a wall or whatever ha ha, but man am I impressed with how close I can focus with this lens. This is going to be fun!

All taken at 200mm, f5.6 at 1/640 sec and 1100 ISO......simply the settings I was using before I saw the fly and on auto-ISO.

Yep, the Nikon 70-200 S 2.8 is supposed to be the sharpest 70-200 out on the market. The Sony 70-200 f2.8 GM is not that highly regarded, with a relatively high variability rate in terms of performance from sample to sample. The LensRentals Blog (which has the best lens tests, hands down) has a bit to say about this. Comparing the Sony to the Nikon 70-200 E FL lens (F mount), the Nikon essentially mops the floor with the Sony. The newer Nikon S mount lens is apparently superior to the older E FL lens.

I'm in the process of exploring my options within the Nikon system. I love my 200-400 lens, but struggle to travel with it, the 500PF, and my wide angles. I'm thinking of adding the 80-400 to my bag for those times when I don't want to hike with the longer lens.
I am not leaving Nikon, as I just purchased a Z6II and sold my Z6 for a Z7. With 5 bodies (Z7, Z6, Z6II, and 2 x D500) and many lenses, I'm stuck to the brand... I guess I just needed
...Show more

All the manufactures are having problems due to the pandemic, the chip factory fire, a shortage of containers, the collapse of the photographic market due to the rise of smartphone photography over recent years, etc.

While it's true that Nikon has been slow in fulfilling their promise of more Z-mount lenses quicker, they've actually done a pretty good job of keeping Z-mount lenses in stock (in the U.S.). As of a few days ago, only four Z lenses were out of stock at NikonUSA, whereas 88% of the F-mount lens line was out of stock. Cameras are however currently a problem as NikonUSA still doesn't have any Z7II's available to sell. In fact, aside from preordering the Zfc, all they have are the Z6II, Z5, D6, D780, Z50 kits, Z7, Z6, a D5600 2 lens kit and a D750 kit. Everything else is backordered or unavailable to order.

However, don't get fooled by the "announcements" of the competition. Because they mean nothing until they're able to supply inventory to dealers:

47% of the Canon EF line and 65% of the Canon RF line is out of stock at B&H.

In Sony, the a1 and body-only configurations of the a7C are out of stock at B&H. Of the 28 regular E-mount Sony lenses, 5 are backordered. Of the 16 G-Master lenses, 8 are backordered.

(I haven't checked Olympus or Fuji).

While I love my Nikon equipment, I am a big critic of Nikon's continuous and historical inability to keep things in stock at the same time they're having lousy sales. But at this point, even I have to admit after looking at Canon and Sony that at least right now, it's probably not fully Nikon's fault (although I also think "we didn't know there'd be such demand!" is absolute b.s.).

So I think we do have to be patient. My guess is that a lot of the people who regularly complain about the absence of certain lenses wouldn't buy them even if they were released. Because if they did, Nikon would be doing much better financially than they have been the last few years.

Nikon Imaging forecasted just a 3% profit margin for this fiscall year. But if they can't get product to dealers, no matter what the reason, this will become the third year of Nikon Imaging being non-profitable. That's not good.
