Seriously Geoff? It's been a dream, now that I am getting the hang of it and have figured out the PP a bit more. At first, I was missing the resolution of the a7riv files and ability to routinely crop 75% for web work (pushing it for prints) but after a couple of weeks, my results are much better. The AF is superior in every respect compared to the a7riv and the ES is fine under most circumstances.
Apart from the better focus capture, my R5 files require less overall PP, the WB and colors are better, and I am back to a more appropriate Tv for BIF; anything less than 1/2500-1/3200 was a bit iffy on my a7riv for even large, slow moving birds such as geese and GBH. The rolling shutter while demonstratable is much better than the a7riv though not as good as the a9(ii). Though I miss the a7riv's controls and button programability perhaps the most underappreciated aspect of the R5 is that the mount seems more robust with less play; it feels like the camera is much better integrated to the lens.
The only thing I wish I could do is figure out a way to adapt the 200-600 to the R5. That, would be interesting (calling Sigma)....Show more →
Don't worry....I stopped questioning...arrives in 1-2 weeks...

It is a good alternative if you can deal with the 6m MFD. Personally I have issues with MFDs much shorter than that so I ruled out the 800DO for my use.

I knew you would do it. I don’t know you in person but it seems that I could see that your GAS case is pretty severe . But nothing wrong about it though and good for the economy...

What me have GAS? Unheard of....
I haven't decided if I will sell my RIV yet. It remains to be seen if it will pass or fail the test of whether I end up taking it out or not alongside the R5 and A9II. Maybe the R5 will fail, maybe the A9II will fail (but I doubt it)....we shall see.

More power to you, Geoff! The way I look at it though, at least you use your gear. Regardless of the brand, you keep on generating wonderful images with your gear unlike a bunch of folks that are just “forum warriors” without images to show.

The a9r of our dreams is at hand...just labeled Canon R5. I bet you'll keep the A7Riv. Nothing else like it. Of course you could say the same for the a9/a9ii, the R5....and the D500
Some would quote some gibberdash in that not much difference between 61mpx and 45mpx. Yeah well maybe in a linear sense. But when you pop into cropper mode things aren't so linear.

As much as I enjoy my R5, it is a bit of a stretch to call it an a9r. The a9’s af is stickier and I’m still trying to tweak the af settings to maximize performance. Your observations regarding the MP difference is spot on though the ability to use more reasonable TV’s with the R5 Is an offset. As I mentioned, if I could figure out how to adapt the 200-600 to my R5, I’d be ecstatic.

I know a little about chemistry, painfully weak on physics; but the forced extended length of the 100500 when using a TC is a fail. Not that will stop me from adding a 100500 but I will always wince over the fact.
Since you have both please post a side by side of the 200600G+1.4TC and the 100500 with 1.4TC. Maybe Camerize.com can do that. I'll look later when I get caught up.
OK no a9r, but you have to admit, as Geoff pointed out, 45mpx at 20fps is a woah moment in the progression of photography, especially since af-tracking and eye af is also happening at that rate and file size.
I didn't do the up from a9 to a9ii, waiting on the a9iii or a9whaterverthey'll call it....the R5 is a fire under Sony's buttock!

Well, according to SAR Discord we will likely see an TOTL cam in early 2021.
I have high hopes on an A9 A7rIV hybrid!

Shoe on the other foot! Now Sony is the one with all the lenses 😎
I went through several painful years of waiting for Sony lenses to include the adapting super tele lenses BS...NEVER again! I am sure as heck not going to pay $4K for bird EYE-AF and then start the native lens vigil all over again.
Nothing among the current Canon RF super telephoto zoom offering to even entice me to turn my head as far as BIF goes. Those Canon RF F8 and F11 lenses? No gracias, not even with all the light we have in Florida, year round. The EOS 100-500 looks good, but why bother when I have everything I need with Sony lenses like the GM 100-400 🤩

UV filter anybody?
Wow, This video is a good shake up for those pondering the benefits of a permanent UV filter work-flow!
The only time I would use such a filter is if I need to protect the front element from on-coming sand, mud etc, e.g., when I am running around the Motocross track.

This may help a little bit...no TCs on but they are similar size for FE and RF.

Wish I could but I don’t own a 100-500. Don’t really see the point when my 100-400 is II is fine? Canon needs a 200-600 f6.3 period.

I did another full morning with just the A7RIV and 200-600. OSS Mode 3, mostly stopped down at 7.1. TS 3. AF-C Release Priority.
Once again I was just super impressed with the keeper rate. I was shooting half of the time from my kayak. The combo nailed an entire sequence of a kingfisher leaving the water, it nailed a sequence of 6 shots of a Green-winged Teal blasting off and flying by me. It had no issues with any of the shorebirds that I shot once back on land.
I have yet to experience a regression back to the performance I used to associate with this combo. Not sure if it was the FW but I think the FW must have helped somehow.

Therein lies the beauty of this lens. While I've seen wonderful rigs on kayaks for the big glass, there is nothing better than something which can be handheld and used successfully. The 200-600 is sharp, versatile, and simply a joy. My only criticism other than the hood construction is the lateral CA.
