I read here folks were having issues with the A7rIV & 200-600, hoping after updating it resolve your issues

I dont know if this has already been discussed prior, but I am posting a comment made by a member from POTN

"I finally had a email off Sony Europe about the issues I and many A7Riv owners have when using the Sony 200-600mm lens, they suggested I upload the new firmware update (1-20) and see what happens though they said the update was not meant to rectify any 200-600 issues (but it could), anyway I did the firmware update and guess what...IT WORKS!!! No more hunting back and to, it now works perfectly. I had two vultures overhead just now at quite a height and against a bright blue sky and the lens and camera worked perfect. This would not of been possible before. Thank you Sony."

Great to hear and thanks! I updated mine already but I haven’t had the chance to try it out yet. I better do it this weekend though.

Very happy to hear that they may have slipped in the magic fix last week, when that combo works it makes gorgeous photos!

Interesting email for sure. Thanks for posting. I suspect the firmware update might also run some type of maintenance scripts like clearing camera system cache, purging junk etc. ( Just a guess). Maybe running maintenance scripts alone could help performance in general.

I've been using the A7rIV + G 200-600 all along I just felt like I was getting less shots than I should particularly in high burst mode based upon previous experience which lead me to experiment like everyone else with multiple settings and combos.

I tested this combo with the new firmware on high speed BIF too, but not yet ready to say it's been fixed and that I have more keepers now than before the A7rIV firmware update. But the email you posted does sound encouraging. I'll keep using this combo as I did before either way and will gladly take more hits

Everyone should report back here their findings after updating and shooting with that combination. It will help others.

That's good to hear and perhaps the general "improvements" addressed the AF issues even though it wasn't stated in the release notes. I think there needs to be a bit more rigorous testing, evaluation, and feedback before making any judgements. For example, upon review of the active AF point is there concordance between what the user saw at the time of the capture and the true af point recorded in the exif? In the prior FW, the answer was frequently not, i.e. the green boxes were active and on target in the EVF, however in post it is clear that the AF point at capture was somewhere different, often not on the subject and in space.

Could this be a case of placebo firmware syndrome?

Sounds to me very similar to the "unannounced" AF firmware fixes that people kept saying (hoping) were in some of the Z6/Z7 updates. Never turned out to be the case. When the AF improvements were actually made, Nikon listed them.

All I know for sure is the FW destroyed AF function with Commlite adapter and my 300PF and 500PF (all though 500PF was close to useless anyways but it is now worse) so something was changed in the AF system.

As to the 200-600, I was getting improved results for no reason at all before the FW so I'm not sure if the FW did anything or not. I'm going to try going back to OSS 1. If that gives me consistent results then I will say the FW did do something.

After my first run with the new firmware and like I posted earlier, I am not ready to say it's fixed.

Personally, I need more time and its not so black and white really as the G 200-600 on the A7rIV was never broken rather inconsistent AF in high burst mode compared to other kits. But many of us have been able to get shots all along--just not as many as we expected on good days and maybe too many just plain bad days.

I think the difficulty to confirm the improvement is that every BIF scene is different, different speed, light, angle and so on. It's nearly impossible to quantify the changes. If some of the in house BIF experts like Geoff and Joshua say they feel it's improved, then it probably is.

We will have to do it collectively; whoever has some findings, post them here, please. In addition, we also need to rely more on Geoff in this case. If I spend 2-3 hours at the owl site waiting for just one or two BIF actions, I would feel more confident of getting the shots in the bag by using my A9 II. If the birds are active, then it is a different story. But now the owls are, lets say, lazy and don’t go hunt that often during the last 2 visits. I will take both cameras out this weekend and we will see.

Too bad the falcon season is over since there are quite a bit of more common birds that fly around at the site, like brown pelicans or seagulls for me to try on those.

Something I noticed the other day is that the 200-600 goes wide open if you are stopped down during focusing where as the 600GM doesn't. But all my problems have been when wide open on the 200-600 and actually better now that I've stopped down slightly.

Does anyone know why one lens focuses wide open and the other doesn't??

My techart pro adapter is not usable as well. Most of the time it doesn't lock focus and the moment of the lens is very slow while trying to achieve it.

The fact that some adapters have been affected tells me that the update was not just a 12-24 fine tuning.
Or this fine tuning has affected several other lenses including the 200-600, and some adapters.

I haven’t done the update yet. Has anybody noticed any problems with metabones or MC-11?

I’m using metabones with the “ancient” canon 80-200L and the canon 300 f4 L non IS. I hope I will not have surprises when I update.

I totally forgot to even try my MC-11. I only tried my Nikon because Alex had mentioned it was broken after the FW. I will try to remember to try out the MC-11 tonight after work.

My MC-11 seems fine.

Unfortunately, the AF-S stopped down at a distance issues with my Tamron 70-180mm are not fixed by this update (not that that's not a situation I can easily work around, but still...)

I can also confirm that the MC-11 seems to be working perfectly fine. I don't have any of my big lenses anymore that I'm more familiar with but I tried out my 24-70/4 and 16-35/4 and they seemed to focus really fast.
