p.1 #1 · Solo Road Trip to Yellowstone/Tetons in June..

I haven't posted on here in a while, thought I'd share a few images from my recent trip.

I've been to YS four times before this year, it is one of my happy places so I try to get there every year. However, I'm not a huge fan of big crowds so I never go in the summer. This year, with my business basically shut down and most travel off the table, I had the idea to head to my favorite national parks the second week of June. The park had been pretty empty with no foreign tourists, no buses in the parks and campgrounds not open until the 15th. My wife couldn't go, and I didn't feel comfortable flying, so I decided to do a solo road trip. Our home is about 925 miles from Jackson, WY or West Yellowstone, so I drove out in one (long) day..same on the way back. Easy drive at pretty good speeds.

Anyway, as usual the parks did not disappoint. Weather was pretty good all week and warm but not hot. Below are some landscape shots from the week....

I also posted some shots of critters...

I like driving, and am used to going some distance. This was a long day (two long days including the return). But it was for the most part very pretty, with little traffic. Once I got east of the Reno, NV area I put the cruise control to 83mph, and turned on music or podcasts. Not worried about getting a ticket as the limit was either 75 or 80. Northern NV was prettier than expected, and Idaho is always gorgeous. I stopped about every half tank, and the time went fairly quickly. But you have to like driving.

Beautiful work! I really like the Buffalo landscape and Oxbow Bend. The Prismatic is gorgeous. Looks like you did a bit of hiking to get those. Thank you for sharing. I so want to visit Yellowstone again!

road trips are the best way to sightsee and take photos. but for such long road trip, i prefer to have a passenger to keep me company. ;')

I do too, but unfortunately my wife couldn't go with me on this one...so I went alone. It was the only chance I had to go without crowds.

I quite like the 1st and then the 3rd one does it for me. I like the pelican you can barely make out in the distance. I also love solo trips but I'm not as adventurous and stick to single day trips.

Thanks! I've been twice in the fall...fantastic time of year to visit these parks (in normal years too)...but I couldn't pass up the chance to go in June with no crowds.

Great Shots. I want to go- but it won't be this year. How far from the main road is the shot in the Lamar Valley?

Curious... where did you sleep at night? Are all lodging open for business during pandemic? What about restaurants? Can't dine in? Eat in the car?

I like driving but I get bored easily. I don't have the patience to drive the entire day/night.

I never find the Tetons or Yellowstone boring, so I had long days each and every day. From home I brought sufficient food and drink for breakfast through the afternoon in a cooler in the car. I eat simply on trips like this...cheerios for breakfast, and turkey sandwich for lunch, and some snacks (pretzels, carrots, fruit) for the day. I briefly visited a grocery store in Gardiner once to restock on lunch and snacks. I had to go to restaurants for dinner each night, but to be honest all I did was get takeout so I wasn't in there very long.

In terms of lodging, when I went second week of June it was a mixed bag. Some places were open, some closed, but none were busy. All places open had proper protocols in place. For added assurance I brought disinfectant cleaner and some towels with me...which I used. No hotels or big restaurants inside the park were open. I stayed in Gardiner, West Yellowstone and Jackson.

If you don't like driving this would not have been the trip for you. I loved it..

I don't get bored of the scenery but I get impatient when the distance is hundreds of miles away, one way. 900+ miles one way is way too much driving. From where I live, the distance is over 1000 miles. That's too far.

I understand. This was the first time I had tried a really long drive like this...wasn't sure I could do it in one day, but at least on my route it was such an easy drive the time just went by. Once I got east of Reno NV I set the cruise control for 83mph and covered a lot of ground. The limit was either 75 or 80 so I was never at risk for getting a ticket...I think from SoCal I would not have attempted the drive. Plus I was up at 5am every day to get out for early wildlife!
