2nd shot is definitely a winner to me. So clear, perfect colors. What sorcery was this shot with?
You'll probably be a bit surprised. Nothing fancy here, nikon z6 with 24-70 kit lens. Yes it really looked like that, not much done in post of any magnitude. Schwabacher landing is a breathtaking spot in all sorts of weather. I just happened to be there on a clear and bright early morning. thanks

A Z6 is plenty fancy, and that 24-70 F4 S is quite sharp for a kit lens. I speak as someone who owns that very kit

Beautiful images. I have been to Yellowstone and Grand Tetons a couple of times (both in June before the crowds). Would love to return in the winter. Amazing place!

I haven't posted on here in a while, thought I'd share a few images from my recent trip.
I've been to YS four times before this year, it is one of my happy places so I try to get there every year. However, I'm not a huge fan of big crowds so I never go in the summer. This year, with my business basically shut down and most travel off the table, I had the idea to head to my favorite national parks the second week of June. The park had been pretty empty with no foreign tourists, no buses in the parks and campgrounds not open until the 15th. My wife couldn't go, and I didn't feel comfortable flying, so I decided to do a solo road trip. Our home is about 925 miles from Jackson, WY or West Yellowstone, so I drove out in one (long) day..same on the way back. Easy drive at pretty good speeds.
Anyway, as usual the parks did not disappoint. Weather was pretty good all week and warm but not hot. Below are some landscape shots from the week....
I know this is an older thread, but if you still read this, how many of these photos were from the road in the park or were those hikes you did with a group or on your own? I really like these pictures and I’m headed to both parks this coming August for just a few days and was trying to determine position on some of these.
Thanks

I am subscribed to the thread so I get notice of replies...As to your question, I did some short hikes in YS and Tetons but nothing major. I wasn't going to do any of the longer hikes (Tetons especially) by myself, even with bear spray.
The bison reflections were taken from a pullout in YS, the Schwabacher Landing shots involve about a 1/4 mile hike from parking, Mormon row shots were right there, Lamar shot taken from a parking spot. About the only shot here that involved a hike was Grand Prismatic. There is a short (about a mile), very easy hike to the back viewing platform. I don't even bother going to the main entrance and walkway any more...way too crowded and I like the views from the platform better. If you have other questions fire away. I love the place. We thought about going again this year, but the crowds are going to keep me away.

Great information, thank you very much. I’m with you regarding possible issues on our own and bears. Based upon your comment, Do you feel there are greater number of them in Tetons?
I’m debating on paying for a guided tour in one or the other park for some safety considerations (which look quite expensive), but wanted to determine which one it’s most needed (regarding safety).

Lovely photos. I especially like the one with the pink house, the combination of a historic looking house with stucco and the dramatic Tetons in the backgrounds makes this look like a scene out of the Alps. It's also fun to see a composition like this that isn't of the famous barn!

I have lots of pics of the barn, tried to find something else to shoot this time. I just don't feel I can take anything of the barn that has not already been taken thousands of times already. I also like the barns on the other side of the road facing the other direction. The shot of the pink house was different partly because the Park Svc had just installed that fence to keep people away from the house. I think that made the pic better.

It's been some time since I was in Yellowstone or Grand Teton National Parks, but if bears are the primary reason why you would pay for a guided tour, I wouldn't worry so much. Bear attacks are very rare. Carrying bear spray is a good idea, but the most important thing to do is make noise so that you do not surprise or scare a bear. Hiking in groups can also be helpful. Bear bells are not effective, I believe research has shown that if anything bears are curious of the sound and more likely to investigate. The best way to deter them is to talk loudly or shout on a periodic cadence.
My "scariest" bear encounter (not even scary, really) was seeing a mother grizzly with two cubs in Banff National Park in Canada a few miles into a long backcountry hike. Even though they were a quarter mile away, a mother grizzly with cubs ought to be carefully avoided. Thankfully, most bears are scared of you, and will move away as soon as they notice you, which is typically before you notice them.

We have done a tour, but that was in the winter to see the wolves. We thought it would be easier/better for that specific purpose. Personally I don't think there are safety issues that you should be concerned about. If you don't stray far off the main wildlife areas into the back country you are pretty unlikely to run into a bear. Interactions with humans in YS are rare in the main wildlife corridors...but again not impossible. I had that happen this past June (I was in my car). When hiking, if you can't keep a clear line of sight, make noise...and always carry bear spray when out of your car. Moose (Tetons) is more likely. I've had that happen to me. But the likelihood isn't zero either, so I guess it all depends on your tolerance for minor risk. The tours do have added benefits however....they all know where the wildlife has been recently sighted so your chance of finding the hard to find animals is higher, and they take all the stress out of the day. No issues with driving around, finding parking where there is something to stop for, etc. Lastly the men and women who do the tours are all great guides and you will learn more.
For me I know the parks well enough at this point, and where to get fairly current wildlife info, that I can't see taking a tour. But they are popular for a reason, it's just a tradeoff is all. Your money for their expertise, experience, and transport.

I was curios as to Cohenfive’s comment as to he wouldn’t go on longer hikes (especially Tetons)?
A group hike (for me) would be to guarantee a larger group given its just my wife and I, along with a longer hike and simply better guide information exploring nice areas of the park (while being informed of current animal activity).
As to statistics, sure, but last week a guide was killed. It happens to anyone. Google it.

I wouldn't go on longer hikes by myself. Not worried about wildlife, but more general risk factors like falling. I guess also having a person with me that I can outrun should we run across a bear is also a consideration...Remember you don't have to outrun the bear, just the slowest person in the group.

Great info again, thank you. Now just need to decide on a tour at Yellowstone or GT. Will only have about 1 1/2 days at GT and about 2 1/2 at Yellowstone. Given that short timeframe and anticipation of large crowds, that was another reason for looking to join a day hike tour. I’d rather concentrate on photography than all the rest while there.

. Yes, and right now it’s just my wife (who is a runner) and I. But I think I can distract her, or at least apply an unsuspecting trip. :-)

If I had to pick one of those two parks for a tour it would be YS. Much bigger, wildlife can be very spread out and sometimes hard to spot. Tetons is much easier to get around in and much smaller..but still spectacular. I like hiking in the Tetons a lot more than in YS...just a personal view. You can do everything from very easy to very hard hikes back towards the mountains, see lakes, likely moose, etc...
