p.5 #1 · R5 stills overheating

To follow up on my question from last evening, I was watching the Gerald Undone 3hr livestream using the R6/R5 that answered a lot of interesting questions/theories about how the temp warnings and video modes perform.

What was of interest is that once he hit the heat limit in 4K60(HQ) you could immediately switch down to 4K30 and shoot forever with the heat warning disappearing. You could also shoot 4K60 (low quality, line skipped) for ever if shooting externally or just streaming as he was doing without recording BUT the heat warning stays on and shows 0:00 for record time. Supposedly

This isn’t what happened tho. Once the heat limit was reached at 4k30 HQ on the R5, the camera shut off and he could not turn it back on. So if you switch once the heat warning comes on you’d be fine, but if the camera shuts down due to overheating (which happened on the livestream) you cannot just turn it back on.

This is the first camera I have wanted from Canon in a long time. After this thread I will wait at least 6 months before I buy. If the CPU is overheating with normal photography which i am interested in, then it is a no go for me.

Disturbing find – because you know if it's in the manual, it's going to happen. Will be interesting to see how often shooters run into this warning.

For those of you too lazy to click the link: A white temperature warning icon may appear indicating that image quality of stills will suffer. Says to stop shooting until it cools down.

This has always been true when shooting with any digital camera, the fact they provide you the information in the display is the thing that is new.

Even my ancient 5DSR has two internal temperature warning icons for stills . The manual says:

"If Live View shooting is used continuously for a prolonged period, the camera’s internal temperature may rise, and image quality may deteriorate. Always exit Live View shooting when you are not shooting. If you shoot a long exposure while the camera’s internal temperature is high, image quality may deteriorate. Exit Live View shooting and wait a few minutes before shooting again.

White and Red Internal Temperature Warning Icons: If the camera’s internal temperature increases due to prolonged Live View shooting or under a high ambient temperature, a white or red icon will appear. The white icon indicates that the image quality of still photos will deteriorate. It is recommended that you temporarily exit Live View shooting and allow the camera to cool down before shooting again. The red icon indicates that the Live View shooting will soon stop automatically. If this happens, you will not be able to shoot again until the camera’s internal temperature decreases. Exit the Live View shooting or turn off the power and let the camera rest for a while."

I stand corrected... so nothing has changed at all since the 5DSR.

This was not a CPU or video heat problem but a battery safe guard. I will never know if the camera shut the battery down or the battery did. The monitor for this is a small flame at the top of the viewfinder.

Hey Andrew, can you confirm or deny something for me....did the camera actually shut down or was it just getting the heat warning?

You will get the heat warning after shooting stills for awhile (supposedly even just leaving the camera on for awhile) but all it means is that you will be locked out of some of the video modes like 8K and 4KHQ.

If it actually shut off and wouldn't let you shoot still then that seems like it could be an issue with your individual camera.

The 5DsR is hardly ancient. The first shipment was in June 2015. I have used the LV frequently (almost always in the deserts) and never had any overheating issues that shut down the camera. The difference is that one might use the LV for 10 or 20 minutes, but the EVF has to be on all the time to simply be seeing.

Can you clarify specifically: Were you able to use the camera or did it shut down? I know I'm being obtuse, but it would be helpful to say exactly the thing that happened.

My interpretation of what you have posted is that the camera completely shut off whether it was due to the battery or the camera is TBD, but it shut off and could not be used.

Today I shot in the forest in a way cooler area with no troubles. The canon battery that shipped with the camera did not last the entire morning for stills. But it did fill a 120GB SD card. The camera tracked great on the very limited tracking I did and is a pleasure to use.

camera completely shut off
Putting another battery in it started backup and no flame in the viewfinder.
When this all happened I did not even own this camera for 100 minutes.

Happy ending

It is not my camera but I was stressed

I hate the stories when some one searching for hapiness in new toy, and the toy becomes the source for stress.

Thanks Andrew. I understand now. I think for stills shooters this isn’t an issue to worry about. Sounded like your battery may have just died and the camera was getting hot inside so the heat warning for future video shooting came on.

Do you know what mode your video was set at? Curious if my theory about it showing heat warning just to let you know you won’t be able to switch over to video if you have one of the heat limited modes set.

This is somewhat concerning to me because it indicates the heat from stills shooting is an issue regarding heat generation. Also, losing ALL camera function due to overheating when recording video seems to be a poor choice of programming by Canon. IMO, they should have reduced recording time to allow immediate use of the camera for stills at a minimum.

Whatever factory setting is for video with only an SD. I haven't touched it. It does write too an SD card so not a real high setting.

That is not what I observed when it overheated shooting 4K60(HQ). The camera shut down, he walked over to it and it turned back on and started streaming 4K30 or was it 4K60 low quality? Regardless he was able to change settings after it initially shut down. I didn’t watch the later part very closely but all I recall is he finally shut off the R5 as he had no more batteries to put in it. I don’t recall any point where he couldn’t keep it running after lowering the video stream quality. Do you have a time stamp where that happened? I’d like to rewatch.

Watch at 46min mark...R5 shuts down, he turns it to 4K and keeps on streaming in 4K30....then at 1hr24min he switches to 4K60 low quality and you get the heat display but it never shuts off and finally all the batteries are gone so he shuts off the R5 way later in the video. His theory is because the 4K60 would shut down if he started recording internally is why it shows the heat warning and 0mins remaining where as the 4K30 would be able to record internal indefinitely so shows no heat warning and shows the full 29:59 time limit.

First let me start with: you are correct he could switch it to 4k non HQ.

I was mistaken because I was also not fully engaged the full time, but at 1:11:00 he switches back to the R5 and it immediately shut down and he said “you can’t just switch it to a lower quality video mode.” But I misunderstood what he was saying, he had switched it to 4k30HQ and it immediately shut down.

But, for the record, he was recording at 4k30 in all of the video at 1/60 of a second. The mode he switched to was 4k30 non hq. There is no 4k60HQ mode.

That is good to know. I was under the impression that when it shut down you could not use it. So it is possible to shut it down, switch to photography and keep on going i assume.
That changes thing considerably for me.
