That is good to know. I was under the impression that when it shut down you could not use it. So it is possible to shut it down, switch to photography and keep on going i assume.
That changes thing considerably for me.

In addition you can just switch it to 4k/60p and carry on until the battery dies. I watched the video.

I said that in jest. I pre-ordered the 5DSR and got one from that first shipment. I've also done lots of Live View shooting in desert and tropical (equatorial) conditions without ever having had the heat icons light up.

Well I am running out of things to gripe about, I might as well deal with the fact my bank account is fixing to drop a tad... haha
Only thing to do now is find one..

No, the first page shows as in stock, but when you go to cart, the status changes to backordered.

I messed up that quote. I was replying to a reply from Evans and meanwhile there were other posts.
Maybe the pre-orders will decrease due to reduced vloogers orders and such.

Vloggers should get a Panasonic or Sony video-centric camera. The R5 is not meant for them. As more and more experienced stills photographers post their reviews and impressions of the R5 the waitlist will just grow bigger and bigger - not smaller.

Yes in a way, just remember that you can't actually record 4K/60 (lower quality) and not have it overheat. The only reason Gerald was able to do so in the video was because he wasn't recording...only passing the signal to stream. You need to drop to 4K30 to be able to record forever.

First let me start with: you are correct he could switch it to 4k non HQ.

I was mistaken because I was also not fully engaged the full time, but at 1:11:00 he switches back to the R5 and it immediately shut down and he said “you can’t just switch it to a lower quality video mode.” But I misunderstood what he was saying, he had switched it to 4k30HQ and it immediately shut down.

But, for the record, he was recording at 4k30 in all of the video at 1/60 of a second. The mode he switched to

Ah yes, I was confused the whole time about the 4K60HQ...so that was 4K30HQ which I assume behaves the same as 4K24HQ as referenced in Gerald's chart here. That makes more sense to me now. Thanks for pointing that out.

Ha !! that became so evident the past couple days, I just re-ordered another EOS R this morning. I sold my used R a couple days ago for $1300 and bought a new one for $1450. Which is basically a wash. Then I started to see and learn more about how random the supply chain was, and how orders are racking up faster than Canon expected.

I decided to wait a few weeks or months for the supply chain to become more steady. Then I'll put in my order later. Cost-wise, the R6 is nice. But I think I'd rather go for the better body and higher resolution of the R5 if possible.

This isn’t what happened tho. Once the heat limit was reached at 4k30 HQ on the R5, the camera shut off and he could not turn it back on. So if you switch once the heat warning comes on you’d be fine, but if the camera shuts down due to overheating (which happened on the livestream) you cannot just turn it back on.

PicGuy wrote:
This is somewhat concerning to me because it indicates the heat from stills shooting is an issue regarding heat generation. Also, losing ALL camera function due to overheating when recording video seems to be a poor choice of programming by Canon. IMO, they should have reduced recording time to allow immediate use of the camera for stills at a minimum.

DP Review TV's R5 review touched on aspects of this, indicating that a hybrid shooter will see reduced video recording time if the camera has warmed up while shooting stills.

I have one of those 12V 'refrigerated' coolers for use in the car, camping, etc. Maybe during a long wedding, while changing locations, putting the camera in one of those, will help.

Also looking forward to the LensRentals R5 teardown to see how heat dissipation is designed. I could see a niche aftermarket for a bolt-on set of external heatsink fins.

I've got a feeling someone is gonna take an R5 apart and remove the weather sealing/insulation before Lensrentals gets to it. Videographers are desperate (as we've seen) for the best 4k HQ and 8k on a consumer camera.

FWIW, another stills only shooter had the camera shut down on him as reported on CR Forum: https://www.canonrumors.com/forum/threads/gerald-undone-completes-exhaustive-record-time-testing-on-the-canon-eos-r5-and-canon-eos-r6.38979/page-4#post-851397

Not saying this isn’t a problem, but for what it’s worth it was 28 degrees in Calgary yesterday and I shot 1500 frames without issue. I was shooting mainly BIF, electronic shutter, evf set to smooth, with battery grip (one NH battery and one N battery) at very high ISO (ISO 10000+), using the 600mm II with 2X III.

The first time I used the camera, on launch day, I noticed the camera felt warm just taking a few stills in my back yard with my new puppy. Yesterday, however, I didn’t notice any extra warmth whatsoever.

It’s going to be staying very hot in Calgary for awhile, so I’ll keep an eye on my camera and report back if I experience any issues with overheating while taking stills.

The user fired several thousand shots over 3 hours according to follow up posts, and also spent a fair amount of time reviewing images.

As a point of comparison: Last year in Thailand I also had my A7r III overheat under similar circumstances. 80-85f, shooting under a canopy, pretty humid, tracking birds and macaques, waiting for a great hornbill that never came for 2 hours, camera became unstable and started locking up, requiring me to pull batteries, eventually after enough problems it shut down.

Also the user even went on to clarify that the conditions were even worse than they stated in their original post:

It was very humid.
Camera in hand for many hours.
Camera never was turned off, auto power off set to 1 minute but several thousand frames shot and lots of reviewing.
Heat index was 94.
Sun was directly on the camera.

Edit to add: I believe what the user is explaining here is that he used the camera overheats as should be expected. Mirrorless cameras are not as capable as dSLRs when it comes to long sessions in high heat when kept on the entire time. Just looking through the OVR of an SLR doesn’t generate heat, while everything you do on a mirrorless does.

Anyway, it is still concerning, and I happy to have more data points.

Thanks for putting things in perspective. There's a bit of a frenzy on the forums right now as this camera starts getting into people's hands. I'm confident things will be resolved over the coming months. If some sort of recall is required, so be it. I think, based on the reports, for us still shooters this camera is a homerun. For hybrid shooters, perhaps the Tilta or similar devices will be needed.

And like a few anecdotal notes on the internet, there's not enough information given. The post didn't actually say it was overheating or that any camera message displayed. It could have been the battery running down, regardless what temp was mentioned that day. Sounds like it was not their camera. Had somebody placed it on dark surface? Because something like that could be hotter. Was a grip used, and secured properly, or not?

And .. is the anymous person telling the truth, or posting an anonymous lie?

I don’t know if that is entitely correct. As we speak I’m testing out video, shooting short clips at 120 fps and some clips at 24 with hq settng. It’s a bit hot in here but too much; after about 45 mins of playing around I got the overheating warning. I can switch to 4k 60 fps no HQ mode but I’m limited to 3 mins now. 24 fps gives about 32 mins

So, I believe that even for a casual video shooter that wants the 120 fps or Hq settings this is a bit of a letdown.

Let’s see what happens from Canon’s side

One more report of overheating.

"I got to use an r5 today out at a Motocross event and well it turned off from only doing photos. This was using the ef to rf adapter and a 200mm f2. This was used for over a time period of 2.5-3 hrs and it was 86 degrees out. I’m glad that I didn’t buy it and needless to say my friend who did is pretty disappointed. I love 1d bodies"

"Yup. Only stills. I think we use two or three batteries.Full disclosure I leaned on the shutter a lot I fired off a few thousand rounds and which by the way I must say that tracking is pretty incredible. Auto shut off was at 1 min. Yes I know it was warm out but doing photos then looking at them and doing photos and looking at them you wouldn’t think that a camera would get so warm that it would shut off from stills."

"I had just got done shooting a burst and looked at the photos that were captured and the red thermometer was flashing and I proceeded to shoot more then the camera stopped. It took somewhere between 10-15 min to start working again. After this tho I quit using it"
