I've also used the Samyang and while that's also a great lens I think this Sigma (despite it's negatives) is the nicer lens.
I've never seen that amount of CA correction in any of the fast 85's I've used before. This without being very harsh rendering. It really gives a "pop" to wide open images. Very nice on high resolution sensors.

Although I didn’t own the 85mm Art DSLR version due to the size, I did own the Sigma 85mm EX version which I absolutely loved. I bought the Samyang as I felt it renders similar to that old EX lens but now Sigma have a made this lens in a small and reasonable size, I just can’t resist.

My Samyang has officially been sold as of today, so no going back. Now I just want to wait for a decent sale here before I buy. My guess is I’ll probably be waiting until Boxing Day.
As philip-pj points out, its always wise to cross reference results with other independent tests: for example, Mark Alhadeff rated the Samyang 75mm as only 'very good' in the center on 61mp at f1.8, whilst the Sigma 85 was 'outstanding' at f1.4. Some of this could be sample variation, some testing methodology.
I'm yet to see a 'bad' review of the Sigma...

You just missed 20% off at digidirect on ebay! It would've tempted me however vet bills took their toll

Yeah I seen that too but wasn’t ready to commit haha. Digidirect have been doing a lot of sales this year and have done 20% off quite a bit so I’m sure it won’t be long until the next one!
It might be just me but I feel it doesn’t hurt to wait a bit in case there’s any minor production issues with the first few shipments.

Some simple sample images that I took with my new Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DN on my Sony a7R IV. The distortion is quite crazy, so I can't wait for a correction to be added for this lens in Lightroom. It's optically outstanding wide open in the center and excellent throughout most of the frame. It's about perfect between f/2 and f/2.8. I'm hoping to see an updated 35mm f/1.4 DN as well, so I can add it to my AF kit (don't worry, I'm leaving a spot for the (hopefully) future CV 35mm APO).

Fancy buildings you have there in Denmark - curved with matching windows even .
In CaptureOne, it's possible to use the embedded distortion correction profile, which is pretty ok. Not sure if there is such an option in Lightroom...

Good one, hehe!
Yeah, it's a modern trend here in the Nordic countries. I'm not so familiar with Capture One, but I'm sure there will be an option in Lightroom later on. I quite like a short telephoto for some isolation of landscapes and architecture, so I'm hoping to see a fix soon. Anyhow, I got some CV lenses for this anyway, while the AF work is more for moving subjects and to blur the background for certain scenes.

Just got this lens for my SL2. I have the 75 SL APO but thought I'd check out the new Sigma...It's amazing. Might sound weird but I love the feel of the MF (I mean for a focus by wire, they got it better than any AF lens I've touched) feels manual focussy
I don't like that the aperture ring has the wide end on the right and f16 on the left next to "A". It's backwards from any lens I've used, but It's SUPER sharp and I actually like the bokeh.
I've only had it for about 6 hours and haven't used it against the sun at all yet and have left it at f1.4, just shooting my regular test type shots and did a walk around the neighborhood. I like the Bokeh. I wonder if it's the same on a Leica as it is on a Sony?
Here's one of my dog...He wasn't amused with yet another lens.

The aperture ring matches what the 24GM, 85GM and CV 40 do, so it matches the prevailing norm for most E-Mount lenses, but I can see how that could be jarring if it's the opposite of most Leica glass.

Funny, i don't remember that about the GM lenses or the E-mount CV40 (had em all) in fact the 24GM and the 40/1.2 CV were 2 of my favorite and most used lenses...(I must be getting old)
It's actually easy enough to put it on "A" and just change aperture in camera though.

What's everybody's hit rate with this lens like when shooting Eye-AF in low light, say ISO 1600-3200? I'm using an a7R III and my hit rate for the eye is pretty abysmal. maybe 1-2 shots out of 10. Otherwise it's hitting the nose or ears or eyebrows. My Sigma 28 ART usually gets at least 5-6 on the eye in the same conditions iirc.
I should add that my subjects are usually wearing glasses, if that makes a difference.

I mostly, if not only, use eyeAF for my family shots and my hit rate is pretty high (or I'd say it is not below other lenses I use). I have to say though, I've learned the hard way that eyeAF is not as good as it is made to be. Rarely, but it can fail to focus perfectly even on still subjects but more often I run into situations where a stray hair or a slight sudden movement is enough to make eyeAF misfocus a bit.
If you're comparing to 28mm, I'd use a DoF calculator (e.g. https://dofsimulator.net/en/) to have the same depth of field on both lenses and then compare again...

I really like this lens, I was testing it against the Leica 75SL f2 last night. While it's certainly not as sharp as the 75 and can't match the organic textures the 75 can pull out, I think it has very similar bokeh at f2 but then is smoother and better with a slight glow in the middle at f1.4. (I really like it wide open)
Honestly, I don't want my portrait lens to be the sharpest lens I own. That's not to say the Sigma isn't sharp, because it is, it's VERY sharp.
So far this lens has me asking myself if I really need that 75SL. This 85 is lighter, has a wider aperture, smoother bokeh (with character) wide open and the AF works perfect for me. I don't shoot movies and usually am in single shot.
Here's a few 50's shot with the Siggy 85
